Heres a 12:15 Sidey solo run...

ED_Run2.jpg

The run was almost killed by an interdiction 3,000kms from the Aulin refuel stopover....

When I popped out of SC I had no idea if I was going to be in intedicted space or in Vonaburg space. Fortunately I unfolded out with the station in view, but a few seconds later I heard another pop and discovered the interdictor wasn't quite finished with me ...

By then however, I was cruising at 320 and had just entered the no fire zone. Still, it added a bit more spice to the run.

This is just such an awesome idea! I really, really hope FD implements something like it as co-op or "solo" missions. It would be like Cannonball Run in space!

Good grief, 6 minutes? Cutting out the need to refuel certainly helps. I'll update the board this evening along with -o-'s new time. Gonna have to get in another run myself now that I know all the tricks, try to get myself out of last place.

Honestly I looked at the time in disbelief, the Viper has some wonderful legs and a hell of a fuel reserve when unloaded.

Looking forward to more races in the future. :D

Race time 21 minutes 20 seconds.

Pilot's notes:
Who says an Eagle can't make the Buckyball? :) The main obstacle here came from the hordes of CMDRs at I Bootis. When I was planning the route docking at Chango was a nightmare but fortunately it was fairly smooth in the proper rally run. Warping into Morgor was trivial by comparison. Some joker interdicted me 3000km out from Vonarburg but it didn't take long to boost away. Result!

Who says an Eagle can't make the Buckyball? :)

I tip my hat to you, sir. Jolly good show! I will update the FAQ accordingly!

I've updated the leaderboard and collected links for those of you who posted vids. Any runs to be considered "official" have to show a screenshot time prior to 00:00:00 GMT, and be posted here before 05:00 GMT. Don't make me wait any longer! ;)

As the first Buckyball Run comes to a close, thanks to you guys who participated! We saw some really excellent piloting and some creative thinking, doing things that I think surprised all of us. Hope to see all of you for the next round! Stand by for the results later on this channel...

Just a thought.

I doubt my main character will be available to fly during the main game, as he's likely to be many hundreds of light years away from the action.

But, if credit transfers are allowed, I could foresee him sponsoring my secondary character so that he could compete wherever the races are staged.

I've been busy with trying to get my own race on the rails so i missed the deadline for this race.
But that didn't stop me from giving it another go.
Didn't make any screenshots this time since it isn't an official time anymore anyway.

But i did record it, check it out.

A race always lasts till the finish line :)

The time ended up at 12m 44s

Commander name: Vargur

It's over

OK and I didn't win and that's fine. Who cares? It was all for fun, right\?

I mean who cares? There was no prize anyway and anybody and it's all just meaningless numbers and I already had T shirts made up with my name as the champion but why should any of you care about that? I just got my *** handed to me by 23 ******* minutes but what does that matter?

*cries*

(but seriously - the final results are in and thanks for your participation. "Theoretical" wins are for those who went Solo. If I blew a time let me know but complaints will be cheerfully ignored. The Buckyball Run will be back! And really - GHDW's time can not stand! Someone out there needs to beat it! Get busy, people! :D)

Yes indeed, thank you ElectricZ for the fun.

I am sure people who participated were also in it for the fun, because there were no (tangible) prizes to be won anyway :) Whoever does the run will definitely be doing it for the fun and not for the rewards (real or perceived).

I look forward to the next leg of the run! :)

Thanks for organising this weaponless event EZ, and congrats to GHDW for the fastest overall run, and for the other participants for providing the friendly competition.

I know you're the Sidewinder champ and well earned too.

***, there was a deadline? I don't recall reading about a deadline for entry when I read the OP :( I would have paid my 38k fine in Wyrd if I knew the entries are closed after a certain date.

Well you're correct. The original first post did not have a deadline. It was later that the deadline was added to the first post when ElectricZ updated the leaderboard.

Well done @ElectricZ that was fun.
I also raised a couple of tickets on the back of it so productive too.

1. Pad and Pad numbers in Wyrd were incredibly hard to spot
2. When you choose a free sidewinder you start from Eranin regardless of where you were before. (This may be intended but seems wrong to me)

I also played with my energy settings for the first time, trying to eke out more power to engines. Didn't seem to make a difference but did discover having your shields turned off and boosting in/out of space stations against the clock is a recipe for disaster.

I had to abort one run as I has turned off the scanner, forgot about it and wondered why I had not contacts available when I was right in front of the damn station and so could not request docking...

All good fun and some rep to you sir.
