Elite / Frontier What do you do to keep it interesting?

As we have all played these games for so long, I sometimes set myself targets to reach.

My favorite one is to start a new game and see how far I can get in one year by trying to get to a Panther Clipper. done it a few times but always needs a bit of luck with the "urgently Require BBS", and trading in...interesting goods

I tend to do odd things involving physics, when blowing ships up is not enough. Putting ship in stable orbit is probably the least odd of them, though it's certainly easier in FE2 thanks to the fact that you can use system map to simulate your trajectory and find the right velocity vector.
As for more wierd things, I have a save in FFE with Harrier landed on Alioth 4, need I say more?

Also, I've heard that some of the guys in Poland (where I live) started a sort of FFE Online League. No, they didn't add multiplayer mode, but they organize various contests. Once, for example, the objective was the closest possible approach to Sirius B (obviously, you had to survive it too), the winner managed to get below 34350 km.

Hmm, I think I'll register there.

I give myself one rule:

I play one commander in FFE until he die. A lot of thing can happen even in the safest route. Had some combat, but when to hard after 1 or 2 sec. evaluation, I flee!
The trick is to set the hyperspace on a pevious safe system when entering a new one.
I was able to get pretty far with an asp but accidently drift in space with no enough fuel because a miss-jump!!!

Altought I consider some bug to be an exception of the rule like crashing in a planet because of the auto-pilot, I really stop playing a commander when I die. It make the game more dramatic and thrilling.

Another cool thing is to save game only when docked at spaceport or spacestation.:)

Anyway, this game rock!
Playing with the original game and the jjffe version with winffe on top!

Have any of you tried Evochron Renegades game? It seem very good.

Sorry for the grammar, Im a french Canadian.;)

I asked the same thing on another Forum about Grand Theft Auto 3, but I've never really set myself targets in the Elite games.

In Elite I did used to like hopping into Anarchic systems, hitting the Impulse Drive thing, (or whatever it was called), and then switching it off again straight away, as this seemed to force bandits into my area, and I'd then wipe them all out. Would do this over and over until I reached my destination, (usually with stacks of kills under my belt).

Whenever I start FE2 I do tend to get enough money, as quickly as I can, to buy a Panther Clipper, yes, but I don't think I've ever done it in under 1-game-year. (I don't know all the best trading routes and what not.)

I have done it under a game year:cool: once

But.. it takes a bit of luck, and dodgy trading, normally between Van Mannens and a system with Luxury goods.

Hard bit is getting the permit early enough.

I've tried setting targets for amount accomplished in a year (money, ship, ranking (fed, imp and ELITE)) and as TJ says, it takes luck. A lot of luck!

For me the worst thing was when trying to upgrade ships and you had to hope there were enough people needing work on the BBS. And then if there were just enough people one would always demand 20 credits a week! They were always the first people I sacked! :D

You are a kind boss!

I used to bundle those sorts into the slave containers. Woe betide him if i "forget" to turn on the Cargo Bay Life Support. It's just a shame fertiliser doesn't sell for very much.

Don't, I still have nightmares about the time I decided to trade a load of live animals once, only to arrive at my destination with hundreds and hundrds of tons of animal meat because I forgot to equip a Cargo-Bay Life-Support! I lost a fortune on that run! (Carried on with the game though...didn't reload from the previous save.)

The muffled "moo"s and "baa"s and "oink"s that came from my cargo-hold, and were then silenced as I drited out the airlocks, still haunts me! :(

Yeah i'm always doing the same with slaves.
Being a died-in-the-wool Imperial though, i'm only bothered about the loss of profit.

Thinking about that, how many people is 700tons of slaves?
That's got to be genocide, surely?
