Small Ships vs Big Ships

TLDR - Big ships are too powerful vs small ships / Discuss

I am sure this is a polarising concept and I am merely wishing to discuss and see peoples opinions. Not suggesting anything should actually change.

I have not participated in PVP so this is purely from a PVE standpoint only.

So basically I wanted to discuss the power level of the larger ships versus the smaller ships. I think large ships are a little too capable of dealing with smaller ships.

I feel like something should be changed to bring it all into a more skill based level or so that at least a great pilot could have a fighting chance.

I feel big ships are way to manoeuvrable and able to stay on target on even the quickest of ships, at least enough to do detrimental damage to one in a very quick amount of time.

My ideal solution to this problem (and I understand its unlikely to happen) would be for small size ships able to purchase and arm 2 small ships with npc pilots to fly with them, and for a medium ship to be able to purchase and hire 1 small ship to fly with them. Rebuy costs would be more drastic using the loss of NPC life and pay out costs (basically saying you are paying out to their families) to bring it more in line with a larger ship. All ships would be labled the same, and losing your own ship would put you in control of the left over ones.

Other solutions could be altering the range of fire on large ships gimballed weapons, so that if a small ship is right beside you, only a few of them would be able to track the target, forcing large ships to switch to turret weapons to easily deal with smaller ships. But not affecting their ability to shoot larger ones.

So here is my question

1- Do you think a large ship should always defeat a small ship in one on one. And if you do, how many small ships do you think should be a threat to a larger ship.

2 -If you feel similarly to me, how would you solve it. Or would you keep it the same.

Big ships aren't too strong against small ships. It's only that those flying small ships usually aren't versed enough to turn the Advantages of a small ship against the big ship. But whenever a real elite Player takes a small ship with a good, dedicated loadout, pray for the big ones, for they will suffer.

in a HAZRES i can kill everything with a Vulture.. and thats a small ship.

Okay I see your point, so maybe its more a price point on ships. Then specifically, ship size. I was thinking more a long the lines of eagles and such I guess.

I don't know how true this is. Are you talking fully engineered small ship verse non engineered big ship? Granted I am still new to this game, but in a medium ship I can blow up a small ship before he even realises I am hostile.

There has been a thousand threads on this topic and it always boils down to big ships and small ships shouldn't be balanced to fight each other. /Thread

1) Not always, but mostly yes.
2) Just do not "rebalance" to the point where all the ships are the same. One thing that is interesting in Elite is, that every ship is different.

Big ships are weak to small ships...pair of engineered vultures or even icouriers can take down any of the big 3 with ease, so long as the pilots know what they doing. As a large ship user, I know this from painful experience. So I fail to understand how anyone can think of them as op against smaller ships...if anything, smaller ships have way more advantages than large ships.

Fer instance...a mistake in a small ship costs peanuts...a mistake in a big ship can cost an average of 30m.

So no...I disagree with yer point that big ships are too OP against smaller ships. If ye get into my sights, Ill literally turn ye into a cloud in seconds...but those who know what they doing wont make those mistakes, and if my slf cant deal with them, then I got serious problems cos the first thing they will do is disable my fsd or pp after which Im just a big target which is near impossible to miss ^

Hence my suggestion of NPC's costing money when they die. I understand this is a problem.

I am not saying they should be balanced. I am merely discussing being able to balance "the situation".

Thanks for the constructive feedback though.

So far the biggest problem with small ships being as good as big ships seems more to people not risking as much. What if they introduced more expensive small ships that could put up a fight? Would this be okay? Would you not like this.

Edit - I see that in certain situations ship size is less important than build/commander skill level, but im sure those are certainly outliers, and not the rule. But maybe I have just not played enough to know what I am talking about.

FD are already taking massive steps towards empowering small ships. Flechette launchers, shock cannons, all that stuff already makes the life of large ships ever harder. Against NPCs any properly flown and engineered ship is OP. PvP is different. Most in PvP fly medium ships for a reason. The only thing large ships are good for is surviving gank attempts if properly built and being able to pull out of the fight before getting blown up. If anything they need a buff.

Seems like I need to do some tech broker stuff.

Your feelings are irrelevant. Big ships are more powerful than small ships. Big guns are more powerful than small guns. Big engines are more powerful than small engines. This is not going to change, for your mental health, I suggest you get over it.

Big ships in PvE are the apex.

Big ships in PvP are an easy target unless they have support.

But enough "balancing" discussion, just pick the ship suited for the job at hand. There's enough information out to make a reasoned choice on what to use.

So... Instead of hiring NPC's to level the playing field between small and large ships, you could just find a couple wingmen to accomplish the same thing? Instead of your proposal to have a medium ship hire an NPC wingman, you can just equip a Keelback with a fighter hangar...

I mean, these forums are chock full of people so bored they troll the forums like it's a full-time job, I'm absolutely positive you can find 1 or 2 of them in your time zone that would be interested in HazRez hunting in Sideys/Vipers/Cobras...

Just a thought.

I am at work and incredibly bored when my job involves waiting. Looking to discuss something on the forums seems to be a crime.

Also, random people wont necessarily want to do exactly what you want to do, or take orders. I would want the "Commander" fantasy, of being able to order people around. I have flown in a large ship with a fighter, and its a lot of fun, except the large ship is a slow boring gunboat. Being a fighter is fun, but there is definitely not enough gameplay there, like managing your modules or shield cells or any of that.
