Engineers Just make junk modules! (and get rep)

I've seen it written in this forum, when talking about engineers, "just make junk modules".

This is in reference to arriving at an engineer who can improve your systems to higher grades than previous engineers, but due to low rep won't at once set to work on that G5 uprade you wants.

So what does this mean? How do I "just make junk modules". If my system is at (say) G4, then how do I make low level modules without destroying my G4 upgrade?

I am (as is often the case) confused by this.

If you have another similar module (e.g. Shield Booster) you can mod that to gain rep, or some other module you have that they work on whether you care about the resultant mod or not. Alternatively, you can buy something from the Engineer to mod even if you're not interested in keeping it. Obviously uses some resources, but just weight that against the alternative.

Ok, that makes sense - and you're right. The "other" ways of gaining rep are all fairly unattractive and grindy, on top of engineering being already grindy enough.

Engineers was always grindy, but post 3.0 it is just grind upon grind im affraid. I cant prove this as I was already at stage 5 with all the engineers, but as I understand engigrinding now, you have to roll from g1 to g5 for every mod for every module, so if you want to take a set of 5A thrusters and engineer them to dirty drive G5 you have top start at DD1, then roll that to unlock dd2, couple off rolls to dd3, then dd4, then dd5. And if you want to go for a different route and put clean drive on there you start at CD1, couple of rolls and restart the cart wheel.

The only good thing about that added grind is that this system now means virtually anyone can G5 an engineer just by trying to roll their first module there, so in essence its THE MODULE YOU HAVE TO GRIND TO G5 - NOT THE ENGINEER.[down] I did kick off about that but all the white knights shot me down so I decided to let them enjoy their grind and the taste of space loach mating fluids.

But you dont need to go out your way to get g5 access, it will come naturally spamming g1 g2 g3 g4 as you work your way up.

I did this junk upgrade route on 1 or 2 engineers choosing a blueprint for which I had a lot of mats for so as not to hurt my real goals.
I also used INARA to see what other things helped at each engineer. If it said commodities I brought full cargo to sell there. The real mega bonus are the ones who buy exploration data as you can collect and store a ton of that with no cargo restriction. I bumped up g1 to g3 at one engineer just selling exploration data - Martuke I believe it was as I skipped Farseer in favor of early shield upgrades at the time on top of the FSD.

You gain reputation with an engineer by just rolling for the blueprint you Don't need to actually apply it. However you need to do silly numbers of low grade blueprints to gain enough reputation to be able to get higher grade blue prints activated so it's actually better to apply them as you unlock them.

Once you have enough reputation with an Engineer to unlock a particular grade that will apply to all the blueprints they do. You don't have to grind that rank for each blue print.
