Corrosive attack .. what the..?

I've been pulled out of witch space and entered non human USS but so far have not engaged the thargoids in combat and last night, with the help of a few tinnies I jumped into a threat 4 non human USS, two ships alone and then 4 of what looked like old type thargoid ships appeared and two went to the other ships and two came for me, I managed to, quite easily I was surprised, destroy the two attacking me but i took some corrosive damage which kept depleting my hull!! I wanted to finish off the other two but was quickly down to 78% and it was depleting fast... Question is, is there a way to counter the attack? Because, instead of wasting the remaining two thargoid ships, which I so wanted to do as well as pick up any dropped stuff from them, i had to haul to a station in the hope of a cure which luckily it did and I was down to 48% when I got there. So, instead of bugging out I want to fight but there's no way that's gonna happen with a hull depleting faster through a corrosive attack! Any help from experienced bug hunters would be most appreciated.

You can burn the effect off by deliberately overheating your ship, kill them all activate silent running and fire all your weapons to spike your heat level. You'll hear an announcement when it's worked, then turn off silent running.

I do it whilst scooping their mats.

Avoid their corrosive missiles and the cloud they leave behind after they explode.

You can fit armor as above or "cook" yourself by silent running until you reach 180%, this will kill the corrosive material. as stated previously.

But beware, if you're badly damaged, you may "cook" yourself into exploding.

Decontamination limpets are the answer you're looking for.

What you don't want to do is get so drunk before you set off that you fit an AMFU instead. Those don't work. Repair limpets don't work either. Neither do the other limpets that start with 'd'. That was a long expensive night.

Overheat to 200% to burn it off or use Decontamination Limpets.

Brilliant stuff thank you Commander's! Rep to you all
(Hope I did it right, the little message symbol? Furthest right? Click on it?!)

Overheat whilst scooping the mats is the one for me!

Yep, overheat and boil off the alien goo, or drop an alka-selter limpet on yourself. That caustic gunk is nasty.

If the ships you're talking about look like this, they're thargoid scouts - aka sprouts, and they're not particularly tough, don't have half a dozen hearts to sub-system target one after another, and a myriad of horrible attacks to contend with - unlike the larger thargoid ships that aren't worth the effort it takes to take them out.

Staying out of toxic bug goo is the best option though.

Otherwise you risk becoming a member of the 0% club:

Hard to tell, I know, but yeah, that's 0% hull remaining on touch down after getting that crud on my FdL.

Overheating is last resort - just carry some decontamination limpets - kill all the Thargoids - then repair and loot everything - rinse\repeat - start of with threat 3 with two thargoids - then threat 4 with usually 2 "friendly" human npc plus 4 thargoid - work up to threat 6 which can often be 12 Thargoid scouts - you might get the odd larger Thargoid - fight or run depending on your prefrence.
You can run from the torps and even shoot them down, but I find it quicker to kill the Thargoids and then repair - gives you extra incentive to get a move on.

That's Caustic damage for ya. If you don't have decontamination limpets, either overheat your ship to around 200% or dock at a station, or else it'll just keep damaging you.
