General / Off-Topic Space legs and other stuff

I've just started playing This early access game again after a year break. I know it's on PC...hence the off topic but I thought it worth the sharing. Must admit (bugs aside) it's got me hooked. Myself and a couple of mates are playing on one of the community servers, which is less brutal than the official servers by a long chalk. As you own kit, the server discord has it's own insurance for your assets in game...believe me, replacing your stuff to save a fresh start is a godsend... the amount of times I've been wiped out during the very steep learning curve is beyond belief [where is it]

Getting used to plotting manual or custom orbits...managing and building parts, upgrades and resources, scavenging, mining...Wondering if that ship on the scanner is a human controlled ship or just another derelict...Are they armed, are they going to rob me or kill me..will they trade for stuff?

Enjoyable few days getting to grips with the game again with a few new features. It's still very early in development but definitely shows much promise. It's the kind of game where docking a couple of modules together is fraught with danger. Going EVA in the middle of a debris storm with a welder to frantically repair ship damage so you can jump to a custom orbit away from it...

My base built out of scavenged bits over 4 days...

(It was supposed to look like this...but I was short of a few bits and not that great at docking them together)

My copilot and mining buddy and a view of the cargo bay inside my mining ship, since I'm a miner as my preferred occupation, same as in E-D...except you cling to giant asteroids with a drill in your hand in Hellion whilst running out of suit air digging for Nitrates for the all important Nitrogen, Ice rocks for the other base element for making air and Regolith for the Helium 3 to power your ship. It's not about making credits...it's about survival.

I was looking into getting this a while back but saw that it was MP only so didn't bother with it because for games like these i like to play them solo or coop only.
But i last looked into this a while back (when obsidian ant did his video on it) so I'm wondering if this has changed since then?

There's around a hundred of us play on a particular community server...there's some PvP, general piracy, nicking stuff or general nonsense if you like that sorta thing... but most of us just get on and help each other out, trade for parts and resources (with the guns out just in case). Some of the official servers are brutal in that respect where folks are all out to kill you and steal your gear. That side put me off it as the game is already a handful without that. Saying that, you come across other players as frequently as you do in E-D...so not an issue. You can put your base in a custom orbit so the pirate inclined can't ever find it since it doesn't show up on their scanners.

I first tried Hellion over a year ago but couldn't get along with the very steep learning curve...it really makes E-D seem like Mario carts in comparison [haha] The community servers are where it's at for Hellion once you find a decent one.

Like I said, I'm really enjoying it..amidst wailing and gnashing of teeth as my ship burns up in yet another debris storm just trying to get that special gear from a derelict I know is in there. It's generally a lot of fun and especially with a good mate or 2, a lot of learning and a lot of dying with no air :)

Well it does look like a decent game especially with the orbital mechanics but it reminds me of ark because it relies on player interactions which means when playing solo or with a friend in a private server it gets boring quite quickly.

Other than that it does seem like a game that i would play, i'm probably gonna keep an eye on it to see how it evolves and maybe pick it up in a sale at some point.

it's very fun in solo. I don't think you need player interaction to progress. Everything is manageable alone and there's ways to avoid player contact.

Actually player interactions come in two forms:
- Co-op: can help looting/fixing/building faster, but is not mandatory currently
- PVP: it's less a need than a potential hassle that can be avoided

Of course, I base my opinion on the current shape of the game, it may change when it evolves.

Oh and to be on-topic: I REALLY hope it'd influence FDEV regarding spaceleg if it's coming.
