What do you 'realistically' require for release in 4 months?

Yes, as someone who has not played the game at all, its why I asked you, someone who apparently has played it, as to what you believed is required for final release and could be realistically accomplished in 4 months.

You are right, it's not even close to the DDA's.
Nor did I specifically list the "400 billion star systems; each one can be explored", as stated on the home page of the website.

Some peoples expectations are bound to not be reached.

You are right. I misinterpreted your first post. Sorry for that.

However: i don't see a problem with the 400 Billion stars. Only about 100.000 of this stars are influenced by the dev team. And by influenced i mean: created on base of astronomical data provided by the nasa and so on. I don't mean there are 100.000 hand crafted systems. All other systems are completly automatically generated. So i see no problem to reach this number. The bigger problem for Frontier will be to make this systems interesting and diverse.

The problem with the current beta is in my eyes the missing motivation to play in cause of missing content. There are just a few basic missions. Trading. And a exploration mini game(looking into unknown signal sources) that has nothing to do with the DDA. The only things we can do gameplay-wise at the moment is basically hauling cargo, fight ships, scooping containers and flying around with hyperdrive and supercruise.

So what we need in my oppinion is:

  • Much more star system diversity. They get boring very fast because reality is not as interesting as you may think. There is a sun and there are tons of rock-planets and gas giants circling around this sun. At the moment they don't differ much. If you've seen one or two, you know them all. :D
  • A part of this missing immersion is that we can't get closer to the planets. You just see mediocre textured balls from a distance that is to high to get a real feeling how the planet surface is looking. There are also no POIs like comets, diverse asteroid fields, nebulas, dark matter and such things. There are only balls surrounding the sun. Some planets come with a ring(with asteroids in them). And thats it.
  • another part of this missing immersion is that we don't have a star system map atm. If you look at the preview of this maps they just look gorgeous. Take a look at this to get the idea. They have more text for the planets to read and are very beautiful presented
  • Factions need to come alive. At the moment they are just static names. But they need to follow targets like colonization and war to become alive and to create missions for the players to reach this targets. Like: "We want to Colonize Ross 9123153. We already have a build-flottila in the system. Please help us with protection/exploration/supply and logistics".
  • For me the exploration content ist very important. They talked about scanning, probing and many facets to find hidden stellar objects and even complete "dark" system. planets without a sun. They also told us that it will be possible to trade this exploration data with other players and the factions. If this is done good, with real signal procession and triangulation and such things, it will be a very interesting part of the game with real gameplay(not just flying to automatically scanned objects). I have high hopes but i agree this will be not easy to do. But if they don't do it, i'm gone. I will not play this game if exploration is as meaningless and boring as it is now.
  • Mining. Combined with exploration mining has the potential to be very interesting. They need to add much more types of minable objects or asteroid fields. Atm there are only rings around planets or gas giants. But i've already seen a star system map were asteroids field were placed in other locations.
  • Missions. There need to be much more than hauling cargo and shooting enemies. But this is already on the way.
  • Influence on the universes factions. There where whispers of ways to influence the factions. For example the exploration of possible systems to conquer or colonize. Or to make an real impact on trade routes. For example cutting the supply of ore for a system to increase the prices. A much more interactive universe would be very good to have some long term motivation and base for player generated content.
  • Much more ways for player interaction. Interdiction, trading, bounty hunting with real gameplay and not only dialogues to read. Such things. Also communication needs to get much further. Atm you can only talk to people in the same instance as yourself. There needs to be some kind of global communication.
  • Galactic News. This would bring some life to the universe and is a necessity to communicate events like supply shortages, conflicts, wars and such things.
  • Faction Ranks. Things like ships, weapons, special missions, intelligence and ship systems should be only available if your rank is high. you need something you can spent your money at or to work for. Its basically a grind, yes. But if this is done with all the planed gameplay features it would be a nice and necessary reward system for all your work.

Thats all things that come to my mind. I know this sounds like a lot of work to do. But if you look at the way elite has taken from alpha 4 to beta 1 i think they already achieved a lot of things. Like the nice trade system and the trade maps. If they do something similar for all other parts of the game this could work out. :)

A fully functional space sim with every feature mentioned in the Kickstarter, on the front page and in advertising blurbs.

If it isn't ready, delay.

A rushed, unfinished release will do no-one any good. Imagine the negative press... A buggy, incomplete, feature-thin game will do far more harm than a delay will. They'd take some mocking 'told you sos', but it would be nothing compared to the reaming they'd take if they released a half- product.

I trust FD to be very aware of this too and will either deliver on time or announce a delay, rather than sticking to the date with an incomplete product.

*expansion content excluded

Completely disagree with the 'no to consoles' thing because there is no real reason beyond elitism for this. More platforms would mean more players and therefore more money to put back into the longevity of the product. Besides, the innovative GUI suits console controllers well.]

Last I heard they havent said "no" to consoles (even tho consoles are grossly underperforming toys with horribly outdated hardware with no option to upgrade) and it isnt ELITE'ism (tho I appreciate a good pun) to bring a game to a platform that is capable of taking full advantage of the games vision and features without having to dumb them down simply becuz 'Hey it should be on evrybodies toy console'
Luv OO

PS-have no idea WTH happend to my quote.

There is no way they can pull it off in 4 months ppl. Be prepaired for waiting.

The Problem is : Frontier is still pretending that they plan to release ED this year. My fear is that we get an half-backed, unworthy version of the Game that David anounced on KS 18 month ago.

We cannot assume, that they have nothing of this features in an internal development build ready for test.

When you look at the previous releases you can see that mostly all features they have brought to us were mostly done. Just think about the trade map. Or the trading system itself. It came out and it worked nearly flawless. Only a little bit of fine tuning on the demand and supply calculation was necessary. This was no work in progress version or anything half baked.

That's why i'm pretty sure they have this systems already in a working version internally but just not completely ready for public access. There are more than 100 employees. They don't work all on only one feature. They can do their work parallel to each other.

Very true, I've been impressed how smoothly most of these features have been introduced since alpha.

However there are still a lot of features to be integrated and tested in 4 months. Also bear in mind some of those will require balancing (e.g. jump distances, weapon damage, background simulation, etc) which can be very time consuming to test and iterate. And then there's Christmas as well...

It just seems a very big ask IMHO. Hopefully I'm wrong, I have my humble pie on order.

That's a little too much imho, to state they're "pretending", as that can only be said with actual knowledge, which you don't have beyond anyone else outside of Frontier.

Divinity: OS did some pretty big content dumps through the beta process and even had one of the nicer features added a few days after release. Il2:BOS releases next month and is 63% complete...

We'll see, I think we'll know more in a couple of months than now.

Unless they are holding back a huge chunk of the finished game from us, they have no chance of releasing a polished product in 4 months, they probably test a lot of stuff but to release a stable build takes a lot of time. Lets say they release mining in the next beta, it will take a month just to test it. And the 25 ships balance? SC balance, USS, background sim? And many more features, each will need a lot of time, some weeks some months, if they have some of these features operational they dont have them tested or balanced, and that is what we will get at the release - untested unbalanced half finished game. I fully support FD but i would love to know the facts and the full dev update. What comes in, when and what will we have to wait for.

Fast release means more bugs that people would complain of. It will be the rebirth of X rebirth release issues. But it will be under Elite Dangerous not X rebirth.

My expectations that are the most important for me is that FD will add OFFLINE single player mode where I will be able to chose difficulty level that would be split into most important segment. Game economy etc. difficulty. And most important difficulty level for me is AI difficulty. I want to meet quite many very skilled AI that can use this game mechanics like flying backwards and flying in assist off mode.
So what I expect is meeting AI (like 1 out of 5) in 1vs1 combat (for this example in very similar ship) that would give me very hard time and win loose chance would be like 50/50

For me this is very important while other things are very awesome trough some OK elements and ending on few very bad design IMO that I think I would need to accept or hopefully I will be able to use mods for those.
But game difficulty is very important for me because what I see now is just kids play. Even below average player can own lots of AI ships and that gives impression that PvE is not just easy but pathetic IMO!

I want challenge from game but I don't want to play online where many would say is the greatest challenge because of players. Well I don't want to play games for other players I want to play game for challenge and I am not interested in online modes because I don't like many things about online gaming. I hate lags, any sort of stutter and many other connection/server problems. And as for this game I don't like all that instancing, grouping etc. even if I completely understand why they must be there. I just don't like it period. It ruins my immersion.
But I don't want to say that i will never go online because maybe I will but if i will stick there or no highly depends on thing like if my closest friends will want to play also maybe my brother/s If I will be on my own I will stick to single player because of what I mentioned above and also I am old skool gamer who played lots of games in single player and only few in mutliplayer but those was boring after some time. Like some MMOs and combat only games like BFs, CS, COD 1,2, MW but I always am bored especially if friends don't want to play anymore. I then switch to SP modes in my real favorite games. And ED is great candidate to become my favorite game for long time :) SO I really expect, even demand that SP will have difficulty options to finetune my experience. :]

So in summary...

I demand difficulty settings and I really hope that highest difficulty will almost make me cry!!! :D YEAHH!!! ;)

I don't have any worries about expanding the number of star systems we can visit; we are being kept in a small bubble to test interactions as much as anything. I'm more concerned about how many new features they put in before public release.

One thing to note that may be important is that when I was at E3, the PR person used the term digital release. A digitally released game can be easily updated with patches, and this happens more often than not these days. I'm just speculating here, but maybe the digital release will come significantly before the physical release, with the physical release having all of the features promised in the kickstarter page (not necessarily everything in the DDA).

I think FD would rather put in fewer systems that are tested well than more systems that are unbalanced for the first release.

I'm getting a bit worried to be honest, My favourite phrase so far has been 'Its only a Beta', if only I could be less polite.

But soon it will be gamma and it still seems way off. I would rather delay than risk rep damage by releasing early.

Look at the rep damage EA have with all their rushed releases.

But I'm guessing the devs version is probably a lot further ahead than our version.

I would not worry. This is a pretty polished beta compared to others I've been in. All things considering I would also rather it be delayed than released with major bugs.
