Stop Name Calling

Firstly I've gotta say that I've really enjoyed reading and joining in the banter on these forums.

Now, I know I'm not a long time member, but it's shocking how many threads seem to drift into pointless name calling, if only to try to rile the other party up. I'm not going to point fingers at any words or topics in particular that cause this, but I'm guessing te majority will know what I mean.

Basically, what I'm trying to preach is, please can forum dudes and dudettes try to get their ideas across without using these words? I'm more likely to read them fully and try to understand your point of view if I can see an argument for or against something which has a constructive nature.

Cheers muchly,

Manalive

Hi there Man Alive.

Unfortunately, this is the nature of forums in general.

However, when you take into account that people are not all the same age and the fact that many people have poor communication skills, its easy to understand why some people might take offense to something which might appear to be quite harmless to the original poster.

You just need to have a little patience with some people and if you feel that something was said which might take offense, it often helps to reply to the offender asking them to explain their issue in a little more detail.

Have a little patience baby, have a little patience.....

woof woof! - That's my other dog impression.

Most people on these forums are extremely helpful and polite. I've enjoyed my time on the Frontier boards more than any other and I hope that it continues to be a place for constructive, mature debate.

There are certain trigger words, such as carebear, that while some don't mind or even encourage, are used as a derogatory way of expressing a preference for a play style. It's these words I object to ... (And Johnty, but that's another story)

Yes, 'carebear' is a phrase that we monitor very closely. Michael himself has expressed disapproval with its use around the boards, so I'd advise anyone thinking of using it to find a more constructive way to express themselves. :D

He also expressed unhappy thoughts about 'griefer' and ever since then i've been trying to come up with a term that means the same but isn't out and out obscene... no luck so far i'm afraid.

I am actually very impressed with the moderators and maturity level occurring around the boards.

Things get heated over certain topics, but in the end we are all just passionate.

And yes I think 'greifer' should hold the same weight as 'carebear' because they are used equally as derogatory at times.

Funny thought how it is more acceptable to call out greifers, but frowned upon to call someone a carebear when they are essentially the same thing just opposite ends of the spectrum.

My personal opinions on the matter are not very "nice" being a military nut, but in the free world people are allowed to feel whatever they feel so I'll just leave peeps to think on that :p

The trouble with the griefer word is that its been misappropriated to mean anything vaguely representing PvP rather than its true and more sinister meaning.

To the OP, I wouldn't worry overmuch. In general these forums are very friendly and certainly there are a lot of people who try and keep the humour levels up but at the moment they have taken refuge from the huge influx of new people and new posts covering old ground etc....

Have faith, humour will return...

In the meantime, MODs that Liqua bloke used the 'carebear' word! ;)

Yes exactly, if ur focusing on a few name calling threads then perhaps ur being hypersensitive. ED forums are very benign compared to so many others.
Perhaps lead by example as opposed to newb preaching, so as not to offend ;)

Try sociopath. It's an accurate scientific term used to describe the behavior recently referred to as "griefer".

Seriously, this is not sarcasm.

Good luck with changing the internet :D

That's because actual griefers don't care about what they're called, as their motivation is to provoke, offend, and frustrate other players. They might see name-calling as a measure of success.

When you call someone a carebear on the other hand, you're implying that they're soft and effeminate. The kind of people whom are typically referred to as such tend to be very vulnerable to name-calling, which they perceive as bullying, and they often make a big deal about it.

I'm very pleased not to fall into either of those two categories. ;)

Easy - attention seekers :)

Man Alive, It's a very small minority, look at those various posts and you will see a pattern there. I absolutely agree that there is no need for name calling or insults but as already mentioned unfortunately that's how it goes with open forums. I've seen alot worse believe me, I play battlefield ;)

Wow! I have been surprised how ready-to-be-offended and hostile some users have seemed!

How do you people cope with real life if you can't handle a little name calling?

For heavens sake look around what is happening in the World, bombings, killings daily in Iraq, Syria, Ukraine, Ebola outbreaks in West Africa.

All that's important to you is using terms like griefer or carebear?

Unbelieveable!

I resent that! :D :p

I do think the terms "carebear" and "griefer" are somewhat different. Probably because some people do clearly actively set out to cause grief, while I don't imagine many people would see themselves as carebears.

However, I don't think people necessarily get offended at the terms as such - it's the implied dismissal and disregard for other viewpoints.

How about 'those who wish to grief' and 'those who wish not to be disturbed'.

Any time i use the word 'griefer', its to denote someone who isnt here to play the game but to become an immersion breaking little [carrot] who is hell bent on 'trolling'.
Its not name calling, its labelling the behaviour of such folk,

mmmmm nah. You see, you're using the 'G' word again. Um, how about 'Those who are trouble'? :D

Problem we have. Even if they ban care bear. People tend to use other words to express the same point and the cycle continues. It going to get to a point people can not explain a point with out offending someone.

but what funny is living over 40+ years you see a dozen of words which use to be fine to say at one point that are offensive now.

If the OP see something that offensive report it. It best to explain why you find a user or a word offensive.
