And they say they are making an investment in the game, just like people investing in a business. But there is no way anyone can get a ROI on that amount invested, even if you are talking about enjoyment gained rather than financial return. Maybe he's hoping to run a big guild, although i wouldn't want to be part of a guild where someone dispenses ships to those he favours, but there are always those that will happily do so for freebies.
And again, not pay to win? So, from day 1 (assuming this thing ever has a day 1), he will have a group of people at his beck and call, with a range of ships, and anyone who thinks that CIG won't provide ways of buying things to make those ships run is simply off their rocker.... well, sounds pretty pay to win to me.
Its possible though: its totally lame for a gamer, any gamer, to attack some other dude who has committed no crime beyond spending a lot of money on a game you don't like. Of course, it would be worse if a dev working in the same genre but on a rival product would do it. Personally I'd be really disappointed if David Braben would start to ridiculing Star Citizen fans. Fortunately he has some class and dignity.

However! I think you're wrong, all of you, that say it's his money and he can do as he pleases...blah blah blah. These sorts of purchases are enabling SC to continue their current course of more and more ludicrous ways to milk whales rather than develop and release a reasonable game. This "gamer" is ruining this game by helping it. SC is like a puppy that poo'd on the rug and didn't get scolded. Now it isn't a rug, it's the toilet. Spending 50k on non-existent ships? That's got to be like feeding the puppy curry as a reward for the poo. It's only going to get worse from there.
At least there you have a puppy, some curry, poo and a carpet to show for your efforts.

Very true! And there are executables out there that cost way over $50k a seat
However, this particular executable that has been in "open development" for so many years, promised so very many things, and shouted from the rooftops that it's the BDSSE - well, it's just what it is. I mean - just look at it.
I don't see anyone else tweeting the amount of money they've spent on a hobby, a sport, a car or anything else at all.
Tweeting/posting your account balance with RSI is an activity and phenomena unique to Star Citizen whales.
If it isn't anyone else's business what you spend your money on, then I'd suggest not tweeting it in the first place.
But! The fact is this - your account with RSI shows your status in the game world hierarchy, that's why these guys tweet it. CIG have produced nothing that whales can use to publicise their status within the game, so they have to post and tweet the dollar value instead.
They should be tweeting and posting screenshots of their fully manned Idrises in action, but they can't because they don't exist, so they post the dollar amounts they've spent on them instead.
That's the short and simple forum post version, but I could probably write a thesis on it. It's very straightforward and highly documented stuff. It's worthwhile and satisfying to watch the Star Citizen crowdfunding phenomenon from this perspective. Pride of ownership gives way to pride of money spent.

'Enjoying the executable' is right at the bottom of the list of reasons why people spend money on Star Citizen.
This is also the reason that the marketing has consistently avoided promoting 'enjoying the executable' as a reason to pledge.
This is such a clearly demonstrated, obvious and well known fact that it isn't even disputed by hardcore fans of the project.

So what....I personally do not care on what you or anyone else going to spent your money....it´s your money.....I think the problem we have here is that person who spent 57k on SC still EXPECTING things to be delivered and while she/he waiting probably still dreaming about BDSSE and how he/she is going to become a bounty hunter,trader or miner(etc) in huge universe occupied with millions of players and billions of NPC where they can compete or fight with each other in enormous space battles with more than thousands of players per instance with never seen before fidelity in seamless transition with pristine graphics quality and high frame rate,with such a game play and flying mechanics that will put any other game in shame......So what do you think what will happened with those kind of people if this game do not deliver what is been promised for all those years?
It's a modern phenomenon. Have you not seen the "rich kids of x" social media accounts? This is just a variant.
It's all part of the game rich people play. They show you what they have and suggest you can aspire to the same if "only you worked a bit harder", when they know full well the deck is forever stacked in their favour. You follow them, by buying their products and listening to what they say and they make more money and get richer. It works, has for centuries.
Now don't go getting ahead of yourself, CIG haven't invented the subroutine yet...
I can see that publicising your brand new expensive purchase is part of the social status game, but I'd be very surprised to see if any of these 'rich kids of x' are publicising the dollar amount or cash balance spent, in lieu of being able to publicise the actual purchase itself because it does not exist (and likely never will).
I have no problem with people spending money on digital items per se, it's when you don't receive the digital item and have to instead promote the money you handed over - that's a different thing altogether.
Star Citizen whales are spending money on non-existent items reflecting virtual status inside a virtual world. Rich kids are spending money on real items reflecting real status in the real world.
Having no item to show their status, whales tweet the dollar amount instead.
It's worthy of study believe me.

For me its not the money spent. Its the blatant bragging about his wealth combined with the the amount of sucking up he does to CIG.
