Dutch spelling for syllables being rather strictly defined, I always found it easier to stick with Dutch pronunciation for old Elite planets. English gave me too many possible pronunciations to choose from because of the 'ghoti' problem.

It's easy - ignore any Americans trying to pronounce the names and go with whatever UK players come up with. (We all know how bad yanks are at spelling and pronouncing stuff - they are hilarious)

This whole thread is very amusing. I just wanted to take a crack at this one though.
As a Kansan, I would guess something like Low-ber-oh. Or Low-bore-oh. Screw it, Loogaborooga it is!
Heh the Lough is pronounced Luff.
Borough has many ways of pronouncing depending on regional dialect, my north east roots would pronounce it Burra.

Whereas Slough is pronounced s**thole ;-)
The best mispronunciation I've heard about was a Texan asking if this was the train to Higgywhycombie (Highwycombe).

i doubt there is anything official, people are still arguing over the pronunciation of 'Lave'

Eranin - error-nin
Dahan - dah-hahn

I always pronounce it Luuuuurve but that's just me.

Possible causes:
1. Non-native English speaker (ie, me)
2. Sounds cooler with hard C's
3. Soft C's sounds too sexy for the game, too sexy for the game....
The letter C originally stood for the sound of the letter K in Latin, and that carried over in some modern languages (like the K sound in 'carry').
Not without an accent on the "e" it isn't
There's one missing on the 2nd O in "IBootis" as well. Hopefully they'll allow accents to be displayed and then all planet names will be displayed correctly and this kind of debate will be far easier.
As it stands, without an accent, "Lave" rhymes with "Grave" (the one you get buried in).
Or this all could be a purposeful clever way to highlight cultural differences and variety... in the PLAYER community!
Because without a doubt; everyone speaking the names differently adds to the worldy, metropolitan sense that its NOT just your small village (or planet) anymore!

There is quite a chunk of Dutch buried within the English language after all - or at least Dutch in Flemish form.
I think the french influence from Norman times is what causes a lot of the vowel variances in the English language...although that in itself doesn't explain why Americans say things like "war-sester-SHIRE-soss" when talking about Worcestershire sauce, which as any English person knows is called "WHUStuhshuh sauce"

What about Azeban city? I pronounce it like Taliban i.e. Ah-Zee-Ban
Then again, being from the south and living by the sea it'd probably sound like Ooh-Arr-Zee-Ban to most of you if you heard me say it.
