Is using a VPN allowed?

I'm in Asia and it appears that the largest player base is in the UK (makes sense). If I connect to a UK server using a VPN open mode appears to be a lot more active. I know some games do not like vpns. I just want to confirm that it's not violating the rules and some way to use one is it?

Means that VPN traffic *might* go through a caching proxy at your ISP, which will delay it and increase ping, or drop VPN packets altogether.

What's that mean to the computer illiterate among us.

Higher latency = slower connection (because reasons)

ISP rerouting traffic or simply forgetting about it = ... well... needs a bit longer.

Unless you *are* an ISP (Internet Service Provider), all your traffic will be going through an ISP. Because provision of service, ISPs will handle different data and requests differently, or cache different data. For example, an ISP doesn't want to go out to Google and grab the Google logo every time a customer requests to go to google.com, so they'll just cache it locally on first request and just update every now and then; far more efficient from the ISP's perspective but you may end up with an old logo between updates. Less common sites, it'll probably just go straight there.

Problem with VPN traffic is it's all encrypted, and it's usually high-volume too, so no value-decision can be made about it. If 90% of VPN traffic is, say, the latest Game of Thrones episode or something, the ISP can't determine that, and so can't cache it. This can cause quality of service problems for some ISPs, so they need to mitigate that by having VPN traffic get rerouted so as to not impact "normal" use.

Think of it like trucks. Trucks *can* go everywhere, but they significantly disturb high-residential density areas, or can cause major congestion in non-major road networks. So trucks are made to take longer routes to avoid those major residential centers and stop those problems occurring, but it means the truck takes longer to get where it needs to.

Short answer.
You might be on a UK server, but your ping will be so bad, you wont be out in the same Instance as anyone

Would this work, connect to a UK or US server then turn off VPN? I did that earlier and it didn't disconnect me. Or will it immediately move me out of the server when I turn off VPN?

When I disconnect my VPN, I completely lose internet connectivity momentarily.
During that time, Elite will time out. When I reconnect, I’m in a different instance.

Usually that's because the VPN software you use creates a virtual NIC, and when it gets turned off the network stack in Windows has to reseek connections and re-aquire IP and a valid gateway etc.

Quite simple to test if your VPN implementation does this - connect via wireless and see if you get a wired connection display.

His ping might be 250-300 from the VPN. The game will think he has a low ping since the VPN will be the tether.

Also VPN's can actually speed up your connection in some cases. For example connecting to a VPN in New York from the UK, then connect to a NY based game server. You may find a few milliseconds shaved off. Nothing noticeable mind you. The VPN might have less connections and be on a huge backbone. This is a gamble and may not pay off and of course depends on time of day ect.

If you want, I can ask around in the Chinese community, I do remember they use something else to improve the connection, which is not blocked or interfered by the GFW.

I'd appreciate that, although my connection is pretty good. I was just trying to get in more populated instances .

Are there significant numbers of Chinese commanders?

Don't know, I'm American. I just live here.
