Mining, as for any Star Citizen activities, will be fun, engaging, require skill and will put any other game to shame.

Ha... Hahaha... Haha... Ahhhhhhw...

ya think you will be able to get away with this in SC?

Or is this limited to one of those finished space sims?

Of course not! It will be more fun, engaging, require skill and will put any other game to shame.

So at the end of the day they would have been better of if they would have gotten rid of Cry Engine completely and should have had a new start by writing a engine from scratch and therefore would also have avoided the netcode problems?
Haven't the DayZ dev's done the same or almost the same?

To be blunt, they could have made CryEngine work. Other MMOs have used it.

The trick is, CryEngine isn't designed - wasn't even intended - to support MMO style games. It's focussed on multiplayer, not MMO. So any MMO can work with CryEngine - so long as you are prepared to put the work into replacing CryEngines netcode.

Developing a new engine from scratch is the ideal answer. Still is.

But once Chris Roberts decided to expand the game, he needed to upgrade it to a 64 bit system, replace the animation and rendering systems, make changes to the physics engine, replace the AI, netcode and server integration modules, and so on.

For whatever reason, CIG were unable or unwilling to do this in an orderly manner. They insisted on developing the game at the same time...without basic design or prototyping work carried out....and they insisted the engine continue to run this game.

But, they have an engine which they are effectively rewriting from scratch, which is expected to run and support a game that they are also developing at the same time, and that engine must also accept any changes, enhancements and upgrades while offering an acceptable gaming experience to the public.

Frankly, I am somewhat amazed the game is running as well as it is, given the apparent restrictions the devs are working under.

But there comes a time when all good things come to an end. If the engine is as problematic as some CIG devs suggest, then scrapping it entirely and starting again seems to be the only viable option left open to them to develop and deliver the game.

It's good that the "open development" means we don't have to rely on draconian NDA covered Evacoti leaks to find out about upcoming content. Also, I'm pleased to see they have successfully simulated the feeling of getting back from the pub, loosing your keys and trying to get in through a back window only to realise your climbing around inside an industrial waste pipe.

Well that was just stupid! Also what is it with all the 3rd person views in these videos? It looks more like a console game!
