Picture comparing T-rex, Spinosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus skull

Interesting picture to get the scale of how the animals compared irl. I really hope that they sort the spinosaurus out and while this is not giganotosaurus skull, they were comparable in size.

Looking forward to comparing them all ingame myself :)

I really hope Carcharodontosaurus is added down the track anyway! haha

The most remarkable thing in terms of differences between these skulls is the sheer amount of bone in the T-rex skull. They all are roughly the same size, but if you compare how much actual bone there is in the T-rex skull compared the Carcharodontosaurus and Spinosaurus skulls, you can see they this animals had the strongest bite force of any animal in existence. Simply looking at the lower jaw is quite telling.

No question about that. The Carcharodontosaurus skull has very little bone which is a general trait in most carcharodontosaurids. T-rex skull and teeth were obviously made for crushing bones and muscles, where Carcharodontosaurids skull/teeth were made to slice off flesh rather than crush bones.

But if you look at Giganotosaurus's skull...

It does have more/denser amounts of bone in the skull than carcharodontosaurus.

I just find the difference in adaptation fascinating.

Me too. I think when looking at differing morphology between carnivores, it's quite helpful to also look at the animals they would have potentially preyed upon and therefore what evolutionary reasons they would have for certain phenotypic traits. Giganotosaurus, for example, preyed on Sauropods (Argentinosaurus from memory), which would have favored a much stronger bite force compared to the Carcharodontosaurids.

Do you know how related they are by the way? They look so similar in morphology. They're both descended from Allosaurids aren't they?

Giganotosaurus and Carcharodontosaurus are related. They are in family with allosaurids too, but under their own family called Carcharodontosauridae. Giganotosaurus got its own tribe under Carcharodontosauridae, called Giganotosaurini. The tribe of Giganotosaurini's members are Giganotosaurus, Mapusaurus and Tyrannotitan. So they are quite close related and share many evolutionary features, but does not necessarily have identical shapes.

One good example is Mapusaurus compared to Giganotosaurus. It is smaller in length, and is about 20% slimmer. But its pelvic bone is noticeably very long, and gives it a very different silhouette. Not to mention that Mapusaurus is clear evidence of large groups of dinosaurs beyond 10 meters living togheter in packs of 7+ individuals atleast. So meanwhile they share many evolutionary traits, does not mean that they will all be 100% identical.

Most of Carcharodontosaurids have very different skull shapes even, despite the skulls having the same evolutionary traits.

The idea of a group of 10m+ predatory animals is a very scary thought indeed.

Thanks for the info!

How excited are you to see Giganotosaurus in this game by the way?? And if Frontier could add 5 more carnivores, what would you want them to include?

I am extremely excited. The reason why however is all the way back to 2003, where i played JPOG. My favorite dinosaur was carcharodontosaurus in the game. We've yet to see Giga, and there's so many depictions they can go for that its hard to keep the excitement down about it. It is one of those dinosaurs where Universal did not have a model for, so we'll see what Frontier went with. It is also categorized as larger than Tyrannosaurus rex, which gives me concern due to the overbuffed T-rex size in JWE obviously. Just look at spinosaurus.

5 more carnivores? Lets see...

- Acrocanthosaurus
- Carcharodontosaurus
- Rugops
- Eocarcharia
- Albertosaurus

I think those would be my ideal 5 choices of carnivores if i were to have a say in additions. 3 Carcharodontosaurids, 1 Abelisaurid and 1 Tyrannosaurid. If you had said 6 carnivores i'd slap Mapusaurus in there just because who wouldnt want a 10+m long packhunter in the game. (That being said, Acrocanthosaurus also has evidence of pack-hunting although not entirely confirmed yet)

Which carnivorous dinosaurs would you pick, i wonder?

I definitely think that the T-rex size is something that needs to be worked on. It doesn't make sense from a lore or realism viewpoint to have T-rex bigger than Spinosaurus or Giganotosaurus etc. I'm almost certain they are working on this due to the outcry about the Spinosaurus size.

Hmm...
I would love a few more Tyrannosaurids perhaps even some basal ones like Guanlong etc. Perhaps Yutyrannus, I'd love to see SOME feathers however limited.

I'd also love to see Troodon, Carcharodontosaurus, Oviraptor, Herrerosaurus, Cryolophosaurus, Utahraptor (I know the utahraptor is essentially velociraptor but they could make it larger etc)

Essentially just a mish-mash of interesting, different carnivores from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretacious!

Majority of my interest in dinosaurs are sauropods. I usually have a decent list of favourites overall. I think the most unique ones outside of those i already mentioned is ichthyovenator, Concavenator , Skorpiovenator or even Shaochilong to name a few. I wouldnt mind the addition of all of them. But there are herbivores i'd like to see too :)
