Bethesda's new IP "Starfield" slowly surfaces

According to Todd Howard, Bethesda Game Studios didn't want to be the studio that made an Elder Scrolls game, then a Fallout game, then an Elder Scrolls game again. It's probably good for the studio if they can do a sci fi game as sci fi has been on their wish list for a long time (actually, they were interested in sci fi during the last production months of Oblivion, before acquiring the license for Fallout).
I am however worried that they still use the ancient Creation Engine for Starfield.

Creation engine's modular, they can rip out and insert whatever rendering tech they like, while keeping their unique but buggy AI and potato face generator.

Interested to see how this turns out. A spaceship based RPG in the Bethesda mould could be fun to play.

I refuse to by hyped ... at least until they release more information. Could this be the game that Elite fans wanted? You know ... with an 'offline' mode? Maybe ... too early to know.

No. It can be many things, but I'm pretty sure it won't be "What Elite fans wanted, with offline mode and stuff". :D

Todd said it's going to be a single player game. It's a Bethsoft game, which means it's going to be moddable. I expect that within two years of release, there will be an Elite mod that's better than ED.

Also, that trailer. What a gigantic tease.

Oh, don't get me wrong - I am really looking forward to this. (That's why I made this thread, after all)
I just don't believe this "Elite killer" talk. It's made by Bethesda. It will be nothing like Elite. I hope it will be awesome, but I don't think it will make me stop playing Elite. :D

The more "space games" the better. Hope this will be good enough to compete and force others such as Frontier to also evolve and do what they really should be doing with their game. (making it more engaging and fun to play, and also more coherent when it comes to world and narrative all together)

I don't expect a "space opera" from Bethesda but sure a fun game to play with story and great mechanics that don't rely in silly grind or waste of real human time.

Also waiting to see something more about Beyond Good & Evil 2 tomorrow (actually today), a game with an arcade approach but a space game non the less.

I don't believe it will be an "Elite killer" but it just might be the kind of game some of the folks who wanted a 100% off-line single player version of Elite Dangerous to have been. As Faybs said, it will be moddable ... but just because Starfield will be set in space that doesn't necessarily mean we'll be flying spaceships in the game. Far too early to know what kind of game we'll be getting.

I'd be surprised if there's no space flight but even if there isn't, it's still single player spacelegs with a story line. That's three of the biggest things people want from ED all rolled into one game. Also, I don't think it's an Elite killer - Elite is a 1:1 scale galaxy simulator, which I very much doubt Starfield is going to be, but it is going to be a viable alternative unlike SC or NMS.

The fact that they have been working on it for years, may mean they will announce the release date at next years E3. I'll have a guess at November 2019 release.

Given Bethesda's strengths in single player RPGs I reckon Starfield will probably be more like the 'Space Legs' that many Elite fans are hoping for. I'm sure there'll be space travel too, which may even be substantial enough to include things like combat, trading, etc, maybe even a variety of ships, but I bet the focus will be first/third person action RPG stuff along the lines of Elder Scrolls & Fallout.

In the Dangerous Discussion forums people have lately started saying Starfield will kill ED. X4 will also kill ED. And SC. Its basically whenever there is any hint of any game being vaguely related to space, people will start saying it will kill ED. :p

Source? I'm way out of the loop. :p

Im calling it now.

Alien Isolation 2 will kill ED

I hope the universe is grounded more in hard science instead of fantasy, I expect goofy stuff since it's Bethesda, just hope they don't overdo it.

True :)

Being fair, regardless of ED's many, many flaws, there's just nothing in the foreseeable horizon that could kill ED, or even compete in the same genre.

Even X4 is a different kind of game. The only released game in the same genre is Evochron, and although it does many things very well and ED could definitively borrow some inspiration from it in certain aspects, as a whole it's just not on ED's level.

As for Starfield, it will most likely be a space based first person RPG game. Skyrim in space (not complaining). I'm eager to see it and play it, but will most surely be a completely different kind of game than ED.

No game can really kill another game..

Its the players quitting playing, that kills games. With any game that relies on 'on-line' connection, its how long the company are willing to keep things ticking over, after that happens (if it happens).

This game looks good, but it won't be any size compared (world/universe) to other games such as ED, NMS etc, because the graphics just won't let it, me thinks.
