Mixed review on rockpapershotgun

I didn't read the review on IGN, but this one seems to be a bit more realistic and thoughtfull.
But the reviewer seems to be not into JWE because of the dinos, he is missing creativity for the park, which is probably not the main agenda Frontier had in mind for JWE.

Some excerpts

That it’s the campaign and not a creative mode that’s front and centre is quite telling. Evolution promises to let you build your own Jurassic World, but in truth it’s always going to be InGen’s park. And for InGen, there’s only really one way to make a park. While the department heads — representing science, security and entertainment — use missions to seemingly offer up three paths, it’s all illusory. They aren’t separate paths at all, just three lanes you can jump between, all heading in the same direction. There are no real choices, no impetus to specialise.

....

It was kind of my fault. The Velociraptor is a pack animal, and without a pack, my first raptor was driven insane. Even a hatchery with no upgrades can produce two dinosaurs at once, so I should have released two of them together. Evolution isn’t forthcoming about these details, however. When you select a dinosaur that you want to generate, some bits of key information are missing, so it’s tricky to prepare for a new exhibit.

...

Fine-tuning doesn’t go much beyond placing water and feeders near the platforms, getting dinosaurs closer to their admirers. You’re always going to be building slightly tweaked versions of the same attraction.

....

Jurassic World Evolution is the most boring of all possible outcomes for a dinosaur theme park sim. There’s no outlet for creativity and, aside from the prehistoric pals you might make, managing the parks just isn’t a lot of fun. By the time I’d unlocked enough to make the sandbox mode live up to its name, I realised I had nothing left to build.

It’s a greater disappointment because it falls so short of Planet Coaster. Frontier has already made the game that shows Evolution where it went wrong. It’s not that Evolution couldn’t have forged its own path, but it throws away lots of proven systems, often without substituting them for anything else. I don’t want to bad-mouth cool dinosaurs, but cool dinosaurs can only carry a game so far.

I hope people give this as much attention as they do with IGN. It is important for the future of this game that there are not only hype reviews.

Well, it's basically what parts of the community have been saying for the last couple of weeks. Let's hope Frontier listens to the criticism and overhauls some aspects of the game in future patches. It would be a shame if Jurassic World Evolution ends up as yet another "RIP, it had a lot of potential" game instead of becoming the blockbuster it could be. I have to admit, after watching the videos bestinslot is currently pumping out like crazy, I am on the fence again. It would be a leap of faith to buy into another expansive game without knowing if the Devs are really following up on their promise to listen to feedback.

I’ve been watching BIS playthrough as well. Was there something specific from it that made you think twice about the game? There’s definitely instances of clipping, like with the Ceratosaurus and the fence.

That statement is related to an earlier post I made in a different thread where I said that I'm not going to buy the game until it's on sale. BIS seems to enjoy the game (a lot) at the moment. However, I'm not sure if it provides the necessary depth to keep me entertained for a longer period of time to justify the 60€.

I have learned not to pay much attention to these big video game review sites cause they will give garbage games great reviews cause it fits their political agendas. Games being reviewed by people who can barely play video games. I will wait for some small time reviews and of course the game will be improved over time.

Remember these were the same people giving games like the COD series great reviews years ago.

I am disappointed about the emphasis on dinosaur fighting and that the sandbox mode is gated. For the former I picture two marketing dweebs who look a lot like Beavis and Butthead saying "Make them fight! Make them fight!". For the latter it is just lamentable. Now I am going to be stuck grinding this game so my kids can sandbox.

You can choose to believe that, it sucks when a game we look forward to ends up being less than we hoped, but RPS is usually pretty good.

Hence why I take everything IGN with a grain of salt, they give COD great reviews and yeat this gets a bad one?

AREED! I 100% AGREE WITH THIS!

I posted right after the live stream yesterday and stated the same thing and I haven't only just seen it. This guy played it. I'm so very concerned by there lack of items in game and the systems they know that work from planet coaster. This game has been made years and years ago and it was on the iPhone that I played it. EVEN THAT GAME had more in game content. But please don't think I'm bashing this game. It looks amazing. But without really must creativity which is know by Frontier to up the ante and if you have ever played planet coaster. You know this game is NOTHING like it except for the quality of visuals. Which are on point. It's just missing a whole lot and I know Frontier if you guys aren't listening. This game will flop so fast. Maybe it's because of the consoles which I 100% believe. Let's be honest here as much as everyone loves their consoles the PC can handle planet coaster and that's it. Consoles would burn out due to the systems that are in place for that game. This was dumbed down and creativity removed due to consoles not able to handle that type of processing. Now what they should do and I see this happening is they will change the PC version to adapt the planet coaster way and add minor things things to the consoles. Frontier if you are reading this and I hope you are. The game looks visual wise great! Creativity...... Not so much. You want a Sim park for Dino's and using Jurassic Park as the title. You know that you cant just leave this game in this state. It looks like an alpha version. Being a VP in tech and design and know a lil about Marketing. Either is Universal pushing you guys to put out a game because of the movie or you just gave up. I have worked at Apple Inc. as a VP for over 5 years. I am a huge fan of your work and games but this puts a sour taste in my mouth and I can't figure out for the life of me. A company that made planet coaster puts a game like this with absolutely no creativity to be able to make a park yours and not look like the next person's. There will be so minor details different from another players. Same goes with size of park, park issues, dino exscapes, and those are all repeating senarios. The fun is just not in this game like planet coaster and I keep saying that because you guys set the bar for yourselfs. This is way below that bar. I think some serious overhaul is in need and that's not in a mean way nor is this feedback. It's trying to help a game before it crashes and burns like the buildings in your game. Don't let something so amazing burn. You guys are creating a game that so many of us have grown up watching and were around when the first Jurassic Park came out on movie. I have never in all my years wrote about or gave some serious feedback to anyone or company. This game could make or break a lot of trust and hope for your games. Don't let that happen.

Pretty much the same outlook from me, only putting in the 9 to 5 in the game so my inner-youth can play the real game later. I just really want a dino sim sandbox to have fun messing around with. That doesn't mean I want everything handed to me. I just want options of progression my way in my park toward my ends. Ideally, thriving dino ecosystems.

May be true, but if you'd been in these very forums for the last few weeks you'd have seen a few of those very beavis & buttheads complaining loudly and demanding a Gore DLC, plus edible staff. So there's that.

As with many games, there are several types of player - fighters, nurturers and the business minded. They will all find issues, but it's only once we get to play ourselves that we'll see if works for us.

The game will get improved over time. If this had been one of those point and click graphical adventures/movies or linear corridor shooter people like so much these days it probably would have been perfect. But obviously Frontier is doing something much bigger here. It could have probably been better off with a little more time in development, maybe 6 months or maybe another year. I imagine they wanted to get the game on the market with the movie. Not many games are perfect these days on launch. Games get updates. I just watched a 1.9GB update for Prey on Steam. Matter of fact lots of games get updates on Steam.

People who have experience with Frontier probably know what to expect and people who don't are probably going to complain, whine and throw more tantrums. Even BestInSlot said the game was still good but need a bit of work which will come over time.

IGN is garbage. Probably the worst of the big game review sites. I mostly depend on Steam reviews and even those get flooded with idiots. YouTube is a much better place. Frontier should have given the smaller Youtubers more access to the game. But expecting a perfect game on launch day is ridiculous at this point in time. That's hasn't been the case for games in over a decade. Since the early to mid 2000's. All kinds of games have issues on launch and this game is no different. Considering what Frontier tried to do I am not surprised. What they have done with the Dinosaurs is pretty amazing, at least with the way they look. Of course people have complained about the AI, animations and other issues for months now. They will get fixed with post release updates.

The reviews have basically confirmed all my worst fears for this game. Park customization is non-existent. Such a massive shame. A park builder where actually building the park has been neglected almost. We can say "They'll update over time" but I really feel like this game was approached backwards.

I agree. Park customization is something so basic and obvious. It's inexcusable that there's so little to do.

I expected a park builder with park management aspects, but it seems it's the other way round. I mean, I'd at least like some ways of designing interesting/unique paddocks with waterfalls etc or a terrain tool like Planet Coaster. Some individual plants and statues would've helped a lot too. Really surprised the customization so bare.

Guys, don't forget that reviews are usually meant for give everyone some reference about the game.

And when I write "everyone" i mean literally every kind of gamers.
My point is that: I'm not the average player seking for a "casual" managment game (and I suppose I'm not the only one on this forum).

I'm a huge fan of JW franchise since I was a little kid and I just love Paleontology. I've spend hours on Operation Genesis, not because that was a good game but it was the best we'got at the time that allows me to play with dinosaurs.

I don't really care what the specialized magazines will write about JWE.

Other than looking great within fictional lore interpretations, I'm not sure how much more this will really offer regarding playing with dinos over Operation Genesis, since it seems like OG had a more fleshed out sandbox mode. We'll see though, and I'm hoping they expand it more in that direction in the future.
