ED Veteran Rules (Or how I reset my commander and learned to love ED again)

I was Triple Elite. Fully engineered corvette. 1.5 B in cash. And I was bored as hell.

Thargoids have been meh. Beyond has been meh. It was time to either quit or go home.

So I went home. I reset my commander.

I decided to play ED the way it was meant to be played by creating self-imposed rules with the main objective to NERF credits as much as possible.

No lucrative PAX missions right out of the gate. No stacking skimmer missions. No sitting at a High Res taking a couple pew pew shots with my sidey making gobs of cash while the cops did all the work. That’s not realistic. Making money should be HARD, especially in the beginning. That’s how I remember the original Elite game.

We don’t need more in the game. We need LESS. FDev should add a harder difficulty mode (or a more realistic mode) for those who want to play the game the way it was meant to be played.

But the beauty is we don’t have to wait for FDev to do anything!

Here are the revised rules:

OPEN only
NO engineers
NO get rich quick schemes

MISSIONS
  • NO missions unless you’re ALLIED with a faction.
  • Once you’re ALLIED with a faction, you can only do those missions IF the recommended rank is UNLOCKED (expert, trader, scout, etc.)
  • You can do salvage missions to locate salvageable items to sell at a market, or assassination missions to get a bounty or pirate massacre missions to get bounties as long as the recommended rank is unlocked. But NO cashing in the missions (unless you’re allied with the faction). This will make scavenger a viable career and will also make ranking up combat a little easier.
  • Can only do PAX missions with PAX ships (Dolphin, Orca or Beluga). Recommended rank must be unlocked.

COMBAT
  • Bounty hunting can only be through FSD interdictions, Haz Res, CNB or USS’s (no help from cops).
  • Wing ups are encouraged but every effort should be made to wing up with similar ships.
  • Must submit to all NPC interdictions!!! You have to deal with pirates (or cops) so outfit your trade ships properly (speed, chaff, decent shields, etc). Can still try to evade player interdictions.
  • Report crimes against me must be OFF.
  • Fixed weapons only.
  • Cannot use a KWS.

Ships can only be unlocked at certain ranks as follows:

COMBAT
Mostly Harmless: Eagle/Adder
Novice: Viper/Imperial Eagle
Competent: Viper Mark IV/Cobra
Expert: Vulture/Keelback/Imp Courier/Chieftain/Federal Dropship
Master: FDL/Python/FAS/FGS/Clipper
Dangerous: Anaconda/Corvette/Cutter

TRADE
Peddler: Hauler
Dealer: Adder
Merchant: Cobra
Broker: Type 6/Keelback/Dolphin
Entrepreneur: Type 7/Python/Orca
Tycoon: Anaconda/Type 9/Type10/Beluga/Corvette/Cutter

EXPLORATION
Mostly Aimless: Hauler
Scout: DB Scout
Surveyor: DBX
Trailblazer: Asp Scout
Pathfinder: AspX
Ranger
Pioneer: Anaconda

NO MORE than 2 ships at a time. A ship can only be used for bounty hunting if unlocked in the combat rank (e.g. can’t use a Cobra for BH until you’re Competent even if you unlocked it via trade as Merchant).

All of these rules are designed to limit credits as much as possible and to keep you in smaller ships until you’ve earned the rank for better ones. You have to earn your stripes.

Trade, piracy, smuggling, mining, scavenging finally become viable options since they all become relatively good ways to make money. People would look for great trade routes (both traders and pirates).

Due to the interdiction difficulty, you’d have to equip trading vessels to help you fight or escape. Most NPC interdictions only ask for a little bit of cargo so you could still avoid a confrontation. Again, going for realism.

I convinced another commander to reset his account and follow these rules. We did a winged pirate mission last night in two ADDERS and he had so much fun, he bought a bunch of pirate paint jobs for it! I was the heavy who fought the target ship and used hatch breaker limpets while he scooped everything up with collector limpets before the cargo expired and we split the cargo afterwards. Made 300K on one run from low temperature diamonds! It felt like I’ve never played this game before.

Again, you could start playing this way today.

It would be best if FDev created an additional mode. All of this would require very little effort on their part since they would just modify existing elements in the game. There’s nothing to add! It’s all there!

It could regenerate huge interest in the game for those who’ve been playing for a while without adding anything to it. And people can continue to play in open, solo or private groups like they do now. Plus, FDev could make more $$$ since you’d have to play as a new commander if you didn’t want to reset your commander. Maybe they could offer this at a reduced rate ($20?) and throw in a bunch of ED veteran-only paint jobs for free.

You could have different player groups that actually mean something. And it would encourage more wings ups. You’ve got a T9 and found a great trade route but you need protection. Or you unlock exploration and really do need the Iridium Wing. The game would be played the way it was meant to be played.

TL;DR - Strip away all the extra stuff that’s been added to the game and get back to the core elements. Significantly nerf payouts to encourage trade, piracy, smuggling, mining and salvaging.

Absolutely love this, especially the combat rank ship unlock, thats how it should be anyway, makes more sense than the federation giving out vettes to mostly hatmless cmdrs who run data for a few hours and rush to end game with exploits... Just visit reddit to see all the kids demanding exoits or leaving the game. So sad

Good ideas in that I like the general nerfing back to realistic levels in terms of the traditional Elite franchise and stemming the hyperinflation of credits in gameplay. With the exception of requiring open and having to reset. I would just start a new account (purchase another ED on holiday season sale) and keep the old one when wanting to return to it. As for solo, the Elite games were solo prior to ED and in the same tradition, I would be inclined to play ED like FFE, with the exception of powerplay which could have elements in open.

Engineers were an amazing idea on paper but the worst thing that could’ve happened to ED.

The big 3/4 shouldn’t exist or the game should have better content to support the NEED for those ships.

Faction status and unlocks should work how you state.

We should have colored HUDs.

Yes I shouldn't have said reset your commander as a requirement. You can also get another account.

Also if there's enough interest, I'm thinking of creating a private group where you have to show me you either reset or got a new account before you can join. And as soon as there's evidence that someone's cheating, we can kick them out. Resolves the open/solo discussion.

And hey, you can go ahead and start from scratch with these rules and play solo if that works for you.

Totally agree, and I'm gonna copy this idea as well, sounds amazing honestly.

About 8 months ago I reset my CMDR anew and was having a blast. The one thing that surprised me is how much and easier credit gains were. When I started in 1.0 I was scraping by, making 1000 credits from bounty kills, 10000 from a mission and 100000 credit rewards was basically unseen.

In just a dozen of hours I already had 10+ million and a fully kitted Viper Mk4.

I'm gonna try this ruleset out, sounds really promising.
And yeah, if ED made a new server where I can start additional CMDR while keeping all cosmetics, I would buy that crap instantly.

That never happened. Corvettes are for people that have played the game for at least 30 hours!!

I salute at your resolve.

I'm not brave enough to start from zero - loosing Fed and Alliance ranks would hurt the most, few engineered modules following. Ships not so much but still. I have rushed a bit and got to Big 3 at some point but couldn't use them due to lack of credit support. Did a "soft reset", sold most of my ships. Now, despite having Python and Cutter, I'm flying trade FDL and I'm enjoying it. I could earn more and faster in Python or Cutter but I stick with FDL for the time being. Those little "take a step back" moments cen really be refreshing.

I like that idea and is great, there is probably only one better idea what to do next after all is done (tripple elite, bilions of cash and all ships) - PvP and learning to be better in combat against other cmdrs. That is best fun for me. But in the case i want stay as pure solo player (i mean no effort to do pvp) then your method is amazing... and far more complex.

But as i said, all who think it is boring after gained ALL possible in the game, try pvp! Get one medium competetive ship, come to every CG and fight people. And mostly, dont get it too serious when you get killed, its just a game! PvP is like any sport, futball, tennis, etc, you can be friend with your "enemy" even when he/she "kill" you.

Kudos to you.

While I never would go your way, I totally agree with you concusion.

Personally, all the "extra" stuff that has been added doesn't really improve the game for me. I played a lot when it came out and building my CMDRs existence up until the T9 when making money was a bit more challenging was quite fun.

Now the game has changed for me. I wouldn't start over, but it's not about making money anymore. I often hop into a small ship and just do what I want.

The early game in E:D is by far the most fun to be had in the game - legging it from interdictions in your Viper Mk. III or Cobra Mk, III, or deciding to turn and fight when the interdictor is a DBS are all meaningful, enjoyable actions. The same is true for conflict zones - you go into one knowing that there's a strong chance you'll either leave in a bodybag or just get away with 15% hull.

I can just see it now...the scout master telling all the little boys that they dont need food...the forest will provide. Dont need boots either cos our ancestors didnt have boots and did it the way its meant to be done fer thousands of years before boots came into being...

So how did the camping trip go? It didnt, the scout master is currently swinging in the breeze under a low hanging branch and the kids all bought cheap cider and danced around the bonfire till 4 in the morning. I guess not everyone likes the thought of a Bear Grylls weekend...people are strange they should be forced to think like everyone else and then we can say everyone is happy whether they like it or not ^
