After the Army (US Army), Air Force (US Air Force), Navy (US Navy), Marine Corps and Coast Guard,

Trump orders the Pentagon to create an space force

"We are going to have an air force, and an armed force of the space" he said.

"To defend America, a simple presence in the space is not enough, we must dominate the space," said Donald Trump.

the US Congress will have to approve this project

I thought using space as a weapon platform was prohibited by all kinds of international law. Did somebody inform the orangutan about that? I bet they did. He just ignored what people with at least half a brain have to say.

Yes,

All joking aside, I think this is tidying all current US Military Space Operations (like Satellite operations) under one umbrella within a subset of the airforce in a manner similar to how the USMC is part of the Navy, but worded in a very high PR manner.

Yeah, they don't seem to be very successful at PR, lately, do they... :D

The USA has had a space force for decades they called it NASA.

It might be lauded as a civilian venture but look back to the people running the program and operating the spacecraft. The military is all over it.

On the subject of them having a secret space programme already, it is clear they have by looking at the published capabilities of Russian "anti aircraft" missile systems like s400 and s500.

For those not willing to search. The S400 can intercept objects travelling at Mach 14 and at altitudes of around 190 miles while the S500 can reputedly hit targets over 200 mile altitude

This matches the detected operating altitude of the x37b spaceplane operated by the us military

Just as a guide the international space station orbits the earth at 250 mile altitude.

This is just Trump doing what he is there to do, cut through diplomacy and assert the fact that America is still (currently) the No:1 Super Power in the world, and not going to simply give that position up. It's posture politics and that is what Trump was elected to be about.

The only positive from this is the rest of the word gets to see pretty clearly what America PLC's intentions will be going forward, so can better make contingency plans where needed. In reference to this i suspect we will soon see a Chinese space force etc.

Before we deploy tinfoil, those weapons also match the requirements to shoot down satellites to deny communications, electronic intelligence gathering or GPS use.

I'd also wager its part of their strive for an anti ICBM system, much like the US Star Wars project.

Oh no, this thread is turning into "I hate a politician" political thread. Ugh.

You know what they say about insults being the last refuge of....

That aside, while war in space is fun in movies and games, I hope all space nations are smart enough to not militarize space.

Well, unless Aliens attack ;-)

I heard this today and thought it was the dumbest thing I've heard all week. I say "week", because lately there's been some doozies. And it's for three reasons:

1. There's already a "space force", that's the Air Force. The Air Force has the lead within the military on matters pertaining to space, and other services like the Navy, Army, etc, follow their lead.
2. If he's looking to consolidate space operations under a single umbrella, that already exists too. There used to be a United States Space Command. Now space operations are coordinated by United States Strategic Command.
3. If it's because he just finished binge watching Robotech and wants his own space navy, there's no point. After we landed on the moon, we went backwards in capability and can't even send a human outside of low Earth orbit, much less create anything even remotely considered a space navy. We start sending humans outside LEO on the regular, then we can start talking space navy.

When I heard this I thought people were joking, but this of all things is probably the least ridiculous I've heard lately. One of this days I hope we can go back to electing political leaders who are merely figurative cartoon characters, vice the literal cartoon characters we have in office now.
