I see that one of the requirements for one of the engineers is to have traveled at least 500 ly from home base. Where is home base and how do i know if i have traveled that far?

In your statistics page of the right hand UI you will find a section on exploration. That shows your max distance from starting location (amongst other things).
If you started in normal E D then it would have been in an orbital platform in LHS 3447 (http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/LHS_3447).

If you started in Horizons then it will have been in a surface base on Asellus Primus (http://elite-dangerous.wikia.com/wiki/Asellus_Primus).

Thank you for the information. I started with regular ED so i guess mine is the former.
I believe that should be 5,000ly not 500, typo?
