Demoed ED at my local pub tonight

I thought I'd tell you about this evening's pub gaming night. There were several punters present playing console and PC games. It was a fairly low key affair with approximately 8 people joining in.

I set up my PC with ED on Oculus Rift so that people could get a really good feel of what ED is about. I had even brought in my X52 Pro so that people could simply pitch and roll their way through space. The reactions were great. Some people had played Elite back on the BBC before and immediately felt at home. Others had not played Elite before but we're impressed by the way the Rift made the game world feel 'real'.

The fact that none of these people had ever worn an Oculus Rift before and easily spent approximately 10 minutes on it without getting motion sickness. I think this is a real testament to the implementation in Elite. Well done FD.

Also the level of quality and finish on the game at the moment meant that none of the players commented on the game as feeling unfinished. They simply enjoyed flying around and trying things out.

This did mean that I lost a Hauler in the process when somebody decided to take a pot-shot at Azeban City. :)

All in all it was a very successful night and I think I managed to create some more enthusiasm for ED with people who hadn't seen it before or even heard about it.

We might have another go at having a gaming night soon. Maybe some commanders would like to come and find us next time at the pub.

[EDIT] I forgot to mention that somebody suggested that we have the ability to slap some L-plates on the space ship. Just so that other PCs know they are dealing with a learner-driver-commander. I thought that would be quite funny. (By the way, I am not seriously suggesting that FD implement this.)

So let me get this straight. So theres a pub. In the world. I assume Cambridge, where people take their PCs and stuff and people play games and stuff. And its like a regular pub that sells beer?

Wow. That combo and idea sounds great. I never heard of such a thing.

Yep, an actual pub. Freehouse at that. Near Cambridge. With actual beers, drinks and food. Makes for great banter. Especially when people crash spectacularly into space stations etc. :D

It certainly beats pool. It would be great to get like 10 mates together or something a few beers and all play elite in the same room.

Its a nice way of getting people into different games you might not have tried otherwise.

I bet the keyboard casualties from spillages is quite high though.

It must be a Cambridge thing. How the other half live. :)

You are a braver man than me!

Even taking a laptop to some of the hick bars in towns around here will get you labelled as a godless unbeliever :D

Taking a laptop and a HOTAS and a game that simulates the known universe will lead to definite unknowns ;)

Besides - it's too much kit to leave at a table for me, tea-leaves everywhere.

Note for future outings. Sell your ship and get the starter sidewinder. When you get back home, buy your old ship and stuff back. No loss. :)

Pics or it didn't happen!

I'd prob get stabbed, shot or robbed if I did that round here! Lol

Sounds awesome! Wish they had something this in Cheshire!

Yep taking a PC and Oculus Rift down my local on a weekend would not go well.. nice to know such places exist :D

I must say that I was a little bit nervous at first but everyone was very well behaved and there were no spillages. Phew!

I did bring my cheapo keyboard along though. So there was some kind of risk reduction.

I hope you showed those dirty console peasants what true gaming is.:D

Yes, indeed. At some point they were all queuing up to have a go. I may have turned some of them. In fairness, most of them are gamers and play PC and console games alike.

Same here ...
and I guess if I did I would probably have a hrd time finding a single Pup goer who would have heard of Elite ... or played something other than action games in his younger years :D

I could live without the rift, cos I dont know what I'm missing, but I am quite interested and trying it on elite before I buy could possibly seal the deal. So something like this set up would be ideal for me.

Haha brilliant. My rift is scheduled to arrive tomorrow, I haven't told anyone what a rift is and I've got a few mates coming around next week - I'll have ED and a DK2 set up for them to try out.

I've seen this post and it encouraged me, so I've demoed it too at my local pub. Turns out, drunk people gets mad by the pitch and roll model:

P.S. I'm writing this from the hospital

Good idea, and glad to see it was well received.

Have a good rep on me, as I can't buy you a pint. :)

My local is more of an anarchy system, so can't see me rushing there with the game. ;)

If we had anything like this nearby I'd pretty much become a regular in no time at all. Combining beer and computer games in a friendly environment is so awesome. Why is it so rare?! :(
