I thought I'd tell you about this evening's pub gaming night. There were several punters present playing console and PC games. It was a fairly low key affair with approximately 8 people joining in.
I set up my PC with ED on Oculus Rift so that people could get a really good feel of what ED is about. I had even brought in my X52 Pro so that people could simply pitch and roll their way through space. The reactions were great. Some people had played Elite back on the BBC before and immediately felt at home. Others had not played Elite before but we're impressed by the way the Rift made the game world feel 'real'.
The fact that none of these people had ever worn an Oculus Rift before and easily spent approximately 10 minutes on it without getting motion sickness. I think this is a real testament to the implementation in Elite. Well done FD.
Also the level of quality and finish on the game at the moment meant that none of the players commented on the game as feeling unfinished. They simply enjoyed flying around and trying things out.
This did mean that I lost a Hauler in the process when somebody decided to take a pot-shot at Azeban City.
All in all it was a very successful night and I think I managed to create some more enthusiasm for ED with people who hadn't seen it before or even heard about it.
We might have another go at having a gaming night soon. Maybe some commanders would like to come and find us next time at the pub.
[EDIT] I forgot to mention that somebody suggested that we have the ability to slap some L-plates on the space ship. Just so that other PCs know they are dealing with a learner-driver-commander. I thought that would be quite funny. (By the way, I am not seriously suggesting that FD implement this.)
