Challenger has silly nacelle landing gear too?

I was disappointed to see that the Challenger also has the silly landing gear comming out of its large engine nacelles just the same as the Chieftain.

Oh well, just one more thing to harm my immersion.

EDIT: I can have a problem with the visual design of the landing gear and still like the Chieftain, the Challenger and the Krait! This is not a which new ships is better post!

The spoiler on the challenger irks me more than the one on the T10. Why did they bother with this ship at all? It’s basically a chieftain with a ship kit on it. Bleh!

Go Krait or go home!

The Challenger is one of the few Elite ships I have zero interest in. This is from someone who owns (and occasionally flies) both an Asp Scout and a Cobra Mk IV. The appearance just looks like they couldn't decide what to modify from the Chieftan's hull and ended up with an awkward design instead. That is actually rather impressive how terrible it ended up looking given how well-designed the Chieftan is.

Go Krait or go home!

The Krait is my favourite ship now. It's almost like they were designing a fast Star Wars ship and put the design into Elite instead.

I actually think the challenger looks better then the chieftain. Was never a big fan of the chieftain looks.

But for me the Krait trumps the both and yep the krait is now my favourite ship. The bridge is superb in VR.

It never ceases to amaze me what people dream up to complain about here on the forums.

Would you care to show us on a doll where the Challenger touched your immersion? Maybe the same place where WWII aircraft with nacelle landing gear did?

Yep another Challenger fan here. It's like a Chieftain that can actually be used for more than one thing! It needed a bit more space to be great.

The Krait is cool too, it's great from the inside (although godwaful ugly from outside, it looks like an upside down vulture).

As someone who enjoys medium sized ships, I welcomed these 2 additions very much.

Gear on Chief fits perfectly.

Perhaps if OP checked it out with a VR rig he might change his opinion.

Note: there is no reason to assume there is any significant length to the engines in the nacelles.

Nah. I love the looks of the Krait. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes that is weird with the chieftain aswell,
but whatever, the top engines on the spoiler could be bigger a bit.

Apart from that this one is a superb ship with a lot of flexibility.

Whereas I see it as an improvement over the chief...so much so that I sold the chief because the challenger is just better in many ways, and I actually really like that spoiler.

If ye cant tell the difference between the two ships, then truly, ye really aint got a clue what yer on about at all...the two ships are actually nothing like each other at all, they just sorta look similar but thats it ^

If you looked close enough you'll see that the the landing gear doesn't conflict with engine parts there. Immersion protected.

I like the Chieftain, the Chalenger and the Krait! I just don't like the visual design I pointed out. I wasn't really trying to make another which new ships is better thread.

I have been thinking of upgrading my 5 year old gaming rig so I can play in VR and the Krait's bridge is a main motivator for that. The other Elite ships tend to have bridges which are functional but not really impressive in terms of design and most of the multicrew seats are arranged a little randomly, almost like an afterthought. The Krait is the first ship design where the multicrew seats are fully integrated into the overall bridge deign with their own cockpit areas and canopy sections. It's almost like they gave the designer a blank slate and told them to make the coolest bridge they could think of and then built the rest of the ship around it.

You do realize that the landing gear occupies so much space that there's no room for the actual engine? That's the immersion issue. It would be the same if there was a weapon hardpoint deploying from a critical ship area. It's an issue of attention to detail and plausible ship design and since that is really FD's only job when designing a new ship it's not an unreasonable expectation for players to have. It doesn't really bother me personally since I've abandoned any expectation of immersion in Elite several years ago but it's still a valid criticism.

How would you know. So you know how much space the engines take up?

It's all about the creative freedom that you are given as a designer so i expect they were allowed to go wild with the Krait.

We cannot know for sure, after all it is collapsible and foldable,
yet doesn't it seem impractical to put the landing gear into the outermost parts of a ship?
That way a bigger space needs to be relatively flat to land, and you might have a worst
case scenario, where someone shreds your drives, and also robs you
of any capbility to perform an emergency landing, without damaging the hull extremely.

Hey, I think the Chieftain is a fantastic ship and I also like the Challeger, BUT I don't like one little thing about the visual design of them and you attack me!

You'll find that I have a history of being one of the most positive people (toward Frontier) on this forum, but I'm proud to say that I stop short of being a rabid fan boy like you!

If you look around you'll see that others have talked about the same flaw many times. I was only pointing out that it shouldn't have been carried over to the Challenger.

"touched your immersion"?

Geez dude!

Yes, I believe you and I can even share this opinion and express it without fan boys attacking! :D

Agreed!
