Where is the paid 'content' LEP holder get for 'free'

Coming at this forum with fresh eyes, I see so much toxicity. More, more, faster, faster!

I understand the enthusiasm, especially if you prepaid for future content. However, I think what a lot of folks don't understand (and not to any persons fault) is what is truly involved.

Elite Dangerous is a self published, crowd funded title, currently in it's post release phase, being developed by a sub-set of a relatively small developer.

They don't have Sony or Microsoft throwing millions at them and saying, "Here, buy yourself 100 more programmers/artists. In the meantime we'll throw a few more million at the TV networks to put primetime ads on repeat so we can sell 5 million units."
They are nowhere near the size of Bungie, which STILL had the weight of Activision behind it in order to churn out Destiny and its DLCs.
And they certainly don't have the funding to keep pre-release level staff working on the game full time, 4 years after release.

My point is that this game IS going to take a long time to mature. That is a logistical fact. They're certainly not taking their time for fun. It would be uncouth for Frontier to point that out, so they just say there's a 10 year plan. Then they remain largely silent on forum and social media complaints because trying to explain all this would look like excuses and back peddling.

Those are just my thoughts on the matter.

On a lighter note; Look at Jurrasic World. Made in the same engine, a framework for volumetric lighting, water and terrain hydroerosion, large scale foliage instancing, fauna AI capable of evolution/mutation, reusable prop and audio assets. Sounds like strategic funding to me. Just sayin...

Hey don't bring logic into this thread.

Also check out Zoo Tycoon Ultimate Animal Collection - most realistic animals in video games to date - also a Frontier game.

I am sure they will carry on with the smaller free updates for story purposes. But as to how the premium downloads and updates to the main game will work after beyond is very difficult to know.

Inquiring minds... What's next? That's the question, isn't it? Kind of surprised Frontier haven't started amping up the hype train for departure yet and not sure how well that bodes for things in the "short" term – next year or two. We'll see.

Because last time they did that Horizons fallout happened. Also all their social / marketing focus are on Beyond Q4.

They will hype stuff when they are close to release. Most likely mid next year.

FD has always been secretive and after several fallouts about how Horizons wasn't that was "promised", they are really keeping cards close to chest.

That is pretty impressive. So FDev must have been working on that at the same time as Planet coaster, Jurassic World and ED.

I would be surprised if we had to wait until mid next year for just an announcement on anything new coming to ED after Q4. I would think they may want to show us their road map for 2019 before Q4 drops.

Definitely. I think in October we pretty much will know what's next paid for DLC will be and most importantly - in what format future DLCs will come.

Your example isn't good because FDEV never announced a specific timeframe for future content. They just said that you'll get all paid expansions for free during the lifetime of the game.

Incorrect. Everything we've had to date, with the addition of squadrons and not including mining, was originally scheduled to be completed by "early next year" after horizons was released in 2015. You're well aware of the original statements Babel, you commented on them at the time.

So there.

Zoo Tycoon for XBO came at launch of it. However this is basically re-mastered and upped version for XBOX (although I suspect it was supervised by FD). And yes, it is impressive. FD is best at market when comes to animals.

The first casualty is always the plan.

The plan is fine, in fact with the advent of Uncle Fluffy publically announcing Frontier want to publish third party games too now, it seems the actual plan has done very well.

It just wasn't the plan everyone was told four years ago, or three years ago, or in January, or yesterday probably.

Unless you have no cares in the world, that's not exactly a sign of healthy ethics.

What was told then? Space legs in several years? Could you show me in verbatim that?

Errrrr...what?

FD never, ever promised anything besides delivering what was promised during KS campaign. They never, ever promised anything besides release date of ED 1.0. Seriously, there's is zero reason to be salty. Yes, everybody wanted stuff to come sooner. It turns out it is not so easy. Wow, figure that, that's life.

Various content creators have said on their streams that FDev have told them what is in the DLC so that would suggest, perhaps, an announcement is sooner rather than later, maybe even august so there is a gap between Chapter 2 & Chapter 3 promotion etc. One has fingers crossed anyway.

Interesting, that's news to me - although I wouldn't be surprised, at this point they would have to know what they plan to do next :)

Yes, there are several important trade shows and potential Elite Meet in August, so let's see. It is not that I don't have anything else to do, I barely touch ED or other games these days due of commitments, but I am still want to know :)

Can you link those statements please? TIA

Meanwhile, we'll find out what's on the cards for 2018's Premium Content (free for Lifetime Expansion Pass holders) at Gamescom in 7 weeks. Then further details of it and 2019's Elite roadmap will follow at this year's Frontier Expo.

FDev have always used Gamescom for Elite's major towards-end-of-year-release announcements, and last year's Expo gave them a new avenue for providing bulk information on upcoming updates.

  • Gamescom 2014 = Elite media demos and articles ready for xmas release
  • Gamescom 2015 = Horizons, 1.4 and Xbox release
  • Gamescom 2016 = 2.2
  • Gamescom 2017 = 2.4
  • FrontierExpo 2017 = Beyond 3.x roadmap

The Expo will also be used for promoting DLC for Planet Coaster and Jurassic World, as well as providing details on their 2019 game (after announcing it to the gaming media at Gamescom).

This is Gaming Convention/Expo Marketing 101, something that FDev have followed ever since Gamescom 2014.

Things change they might take longer or need more fixing or break other stuff or be beyond the budget or just plain old be impossible to implement. That's just how real life is.

Ethics doesn't come into that it's just reality, like wait and see if you can't handle the outcome of taking a gamble.

It's OK for FDEV to work on other things, that's what their company exists to do.

Concept art from the period tells it's own story.

If you're going to publish stuff like that and then go with the whole "Ah, but we never said we were going to...." thing, you probably need to take some kind of business ethics class.

*EDIT*

Would somebody like to go through the details of that pic' and point out the stuff that is/isn't in the game, or should I do it? :p
