Ships Type 9 heavy bulk trading, is it really that bad?

Hey guys,

So im a new CMDR here in elite and ive been making the bulk of my cash with trading runs, Im very very curious about upgrading to a type 9 heavy and from googling around I see it has recently been buffed. Great news right? Heres the problem, every other thread ive seen or read is smashing the type 9 to hell and back. Almost every thread from another CMDR requesting a fitting etc seems to end with advice against buying the ship so start with. generally speaking there is little to no type 9 love on the internet as far as I can see. So my question is this...... is really that bad?

I have a Asp X right now I use for rares and passenger missions, I have a vulture for BH and massacre missions etc. The type 9 I want to be my bulk trade ship for evenings when Im lazy as hell and just want to bounce from station A back to B and make a tidy few cr on the way. So is there a way to make the Type 9 a viable bulk trader? What fittings do you guys recommend to assist me in escaping from pirates during interdiction.

Lets try and keep this thread away from "doom just buy a conda or type 10" and lets come up with some awesome fittings for the type 9.

P.s. ive been playing for about 2 and a half weeks, lots of stuff i dont know yet so please keep abbreviations to a minimum, many thanks in advance

I know this isn't the question you asked, but have you considered a T-7? They're cheap as chips for what they are (17m IIRC, so under 30m fitted out often), can carry over 200T depending on loadout, jump over 20 without engineering, good range of slots... I use mine for trading and passengers and it makes me millions. I'm biased as I just prefer the look to the T-9, but it's worth thinking about as it does surprising bulk for its price.

I can highly recommend buying a T9, I have no problems flying mine.
You can make big bucks in one trading slaves (if you are in to that) or basic meds to outbreak systems.

If you are allied with all the factions in a system you can make even bigger bucks stacking haulage missions.

Ignore the nay sayers and go for it.

The problem with the Type-9 is the short jump range when unengineered. The Type-9 is ok for solo or private group and worth the money, but its too slow to play in open on dangerous trade routes - Community goals for example.

After the buff the Type-9 can carry more cargo than the Imperial Cutter and has no rank requirements. You may also consider the Anaconda, but thats triple the costs of a Type-9. The Cutter costs even more than the Anaconda and needs an imperial rank - Duke.

I got mine to 29LY and 738t of cargo. I swap the 6E cargo rack for a fuel scoop if needed or store the Guardian FSD for another cargo rack: https://s.orbis.zone/juNfrg1u

For open you would need some shield boosters, better shields, thrusters and maybe some armor. But it will be a sitting duck anyway.

I don't really have a problem with the budget for a t9 and the t7 doesn't seem like a large enough upgrade from my asp if I just fill it with cargo racks. I really want the space trucker feel of a heavy trader

Wow I had no idea fsd boosters were even in the game. Do you find a 5a large enough to take hits while your waiting to jump again after an interdiction ? I'll admit I've been utterly spoilt with my asp even taking passenger that are pursued I've gotten very hard to submitting to interdiction and then simply boosting away. Can't even think of a time I've lost my shields infact.

Love my Type 9

Hello. I am a casual player (open play on my PC) and for a while was just an explorer but a few months ago decided to try Mining and I went with the Type 7..yes i know the small lasers for it takes forever to mine but getting use to using the Lakon series it set me for..the Type 9. I did a lot of research and want something that I can Mine, do some exploring and give some versatility (little..very little combat) and possible trading.

If one goes from a faster, or nimble, or smaller craft then jumps right into a Type 9 then yes it is slow and is a flying brick. But I bought it for the long planning i have in mind (Type 10 baby..will take a while). Out of the box it..well.. truthfully it sucks. You have to really know you are going to engineer it to turn it into a diamond. So far maxed out FSD (unlaid tops a tad over 30LY) some DD thruster (I have no problems avoiding Interdictions) jacked up the Power plus Long range on sensors , Fighter Bay and more to come as i play. All in all if you ease into it you will really like it. If you just jump right in you might be disappointed.

I admit i do not know how to put my link/build up online (maybe someone can give me some pointers) for i like to give some of my input just like others have done all over the different forums/reddit.

Just my 2 cents and thank you.

Hey man thabks very much for your change !!

I don't have access to engineers yet but I don't personally see it as a massive problem. I've found a number of routes that are 30 ish Ly hops paying very nicely per tonne. With that in mind initially I'll be quite happy with a 13 Ly laden jump range. Sure 2 extra hops add a few mins each way but in my experience it's more important that your stations are reasonably close to the arrival point.

is really that bad?

Nope, definite not. :D

So is there a way to make the Type 9 a viable bulk trader? What fittings do you guys recommend to assist me in escaping from pirates during interdiction.

The first thing I'd recommend you are Dirty Drives. G3 from Farseers should be enough, but they are very important, as the supercruise handling is directly influenced by the thruster handling. Don't expect the T9 to run fast enough to run from pirates (it won't), but it could make interdictions a lot less scary. Especially Pythons would be really dangerous as they handle a lot better than you, so the interdiction could be very hard to avoid + it masslocks you.

The second thing I'd recommend are Prismatics. That's a powerplay-item accesed by a tier3 membership after 3weeks for Aisling Duval. Just wait the 3weeks and than do one delivery run with the T9. If your fully loaden, then you're Instand Tier 3. So you can buy your Prismatic.

Third one would be a FSD mod. The T9 has one of the worst jumpranges ingame, even worse than most of the federal ships, and if it is fully loaden, it's sometimes impossible to jump to your destination. Especially because it suffers extremely from it's cargo though its undersized FSD. My T9 jumps empty over 30LYs, while I get fully loaden less than 16LYs. Also, weight down what you can, without sacrifising your defense.

Here is my build, engineered with the stuff you get only by accesing Farseeres as only engineer. Even if my mods are older and more crappy, that still works great for me. Btw: The heatsink is for smuggling stuff. If you get scanned, pop a heatsink and youll be fine for the next few moments. It's still needs a bit training to smuggle things into highly guarded Orbis starports, but it definitly works.

Lets try and keep this thread away from "doom just buy a conda or type 10" and lets come up with some awesome fittings for the type 9.

Actually the T10 is the much less scary ship and offers one of the best jumpranges for fully loaden ships. If your T9 gets you into trouble too often, it's a great alternative.
Also I agree with Simon Templar. A T7 is also a great cargo-ship, but much less scary and dangerous than the T9. I'd really recommend to fly it first, to get a feel for larger, slower, more lumbering ships, as the ASP is not comparable to a T9. It's a complete different way to fly. Some People get real Problems with flying the 'Conda after their ASP and the 'Conda is much less difficould to manouver than the T9. But once you get used to it, it can be a real pleasure. :)

Fair enough! I realise that I'm (almost) alone in this, but I was disappointed in the Asp. The T-7 feels like a much, much larger ship, and could haul a lot more than my 200T if I wanted it to - I have both first and business class cabins, as well as a dual SRV bay, as I like to explore and just run passengers and cargo to make some money while I'm at it. I like that it filters the mission screen for only larger ports, as I can always upgrade ships easily, and the feel of the T-7 in flight is very different from the Asp. I thought I'd be a long way past the T-7 now, but I love it so much that I have just carried on using it (which is why it is set up as a multirole vessel). It has a feel much more like the larger freighters than the Asp had. If you are so flush, I'd try it out in case you miss out on a ship which could have been a firm favourite - you can always sell it if you hate it. I feared that it would be a slightly too sideways move from my Asp (I bought as I wanted a large freighter and at the time couldn't afford a T-9), but actually it felt an awful lot more of a piece to me. Just A rate the bits you need to before you judge it!! I was very surprised at how much of an upgrade it seemed over the Asp-X.

I will get a T-9 sister ship as I sort of want to (and I need partner for it - my T-7 is the MSV Polar Star, so I need an MSV Gorky Park to complete my set!) but I suspect that the T-7 is always a ship I will return to. And I haven't even engineered it, yet.

Anyway, there are no bad choices, all the ships have their own character. Enjoy the shopping!

I flew a t6 to buy my Asp is there much difference ? I actually found the t6 quite fast when boosting as well but I realise it's much lighter. It might be a valid point in missing the t7 I don't know maybe I will try one out for a bit. I'm not super flush I have the cash for a t9 but not an anaconda lol

I started playing with just the Basic Elite Dangerous (got Horizons about a month ago). Most posts that i have read, people have a T-9 but parked in just a very small system area which is also great (if that is ones build). As for me i have never been a big fan a 'extras' or 'Alts' in games (even going back to EQ). I like to concentrate on 1 character (or in this case 1 Ship) and the MCr that is required to buy the T-9 is a big chuck, let alone trying to upgrade it (that is why I plan on doing it in steps), but if(when) you do buy Horizons the engineer you want to start with imho is Felicity Farseer. She helps big time with G5 FSD, G3 Thrusters and a few other G1 items.

But I did play my T-7 non Horizons which was still ok so if played safe a non engineered T-9 should still be a blast to play. I only have 1 slot 8 Cargo 256t which for me is enough space for mining..gives me room to add fighters etc etc and for a while I did use a docking computer for my T-9 but got rid of it when i was more comfortable docking manually (going in/out of stations just need to aim slightly lower to squeeze thru the mailslot). Sad thing is the T-9 is large and can not dock on outposts. I think 'Go big or Go home' LoL.

I love the T9, got two cargo beasts and a station rescue special.
No weapons on any.
If you know what you're doing its plenty good.
However, I would suggest a Python (medium pad) first, use that to earn credits for your fully rated T9(s).
You can go T9 now, but you will need to know how to deal with interdictions.
It's very good for trade CGs!

I love flying big ships and the T-9 is a great bulk trader.
Some people can't get used to the bigness of the big ones. You just need to adapt.
Big ships handle very differently compared to smaller vessels (as they should). It is an acquired taste.

Used to fly a T9 cause I like the style of a dedicated trade vessel. But got tired of NPCs interdicting me 5-6 times each, plus sometimes you just can't get away cause anything from the python up can mass lock you. So I only recommend it if you can't get a trading anaconda or cutter and want a big trading ship. I replaced mine with a cutter, full armor and weapons it can carry 640t and jump 40ly empty.

The T9 and/or T10 are both great ships. T9 for pure trading and the T10 sort of does the Conda thing for me, i.e., a large multi-role.
And full agreement on the nonsense factor of the Python mass locking a T9.

I have a Type-9, OP. I love it. It's great for bulk trading and wing cargo hauling. Also makes one hell of a bulk scavenger.

The T-9 and T-10 are the only large ships that I own.

T9 is a solid ship that really gives you a feel of being massive and slow. I strongly suspect people are comparing it to the Cutter, a MUCH more expensive ship with a huge rank grind. That being said, once you have the Cutter, there's not much reason to fly the Type 9 for heavy cargo runs since the capacity is comparable and the Cutter has a much bigger jump range and much faster thrusters.

There's also the Type 10 which I've turned into my dedicated miner. Although I'm still waiting on upcoming changes as I might need something more agile for deep core mining.
