General / Off-Topic FIFA World Cup

Possession: Croatia = 66% France = 34%

Shots: Croatia = 14 (!) France = 7
Shots On Target: Croatia = 4 France = 6(!)

For me it was that ratio of shots/shots on target that told the story. France were just more clinical and accurate around the box.

My take on the penalty VAR usage was that just behind the Croatian defender that handled the ball on to his knee/leg and behind the goal was a waiting French striker (Giroud iirc) that the trajectory of the ball could have landed near. So a potential clear shot on goal was blocked (accidentally or not) by the hand ball.

Unlucky for Croatia, but they made that up with Hugo Lloris's comical 'gift' goal to make it 4-2 with 25 mins to go.

I think the Croatian team (like many) just found the French defence hard to break down, but this was about a bad a defence shift from that French defence as i have seen in the later stages of the competition, so with a few more of those shots on target from Croatia and it could have gone all the way.

Well done France, and somewhere i like to think of one Zidane feeling the good vibes, and how this 'motley crew' of a team can stick Le Penn one ;)

Patrick, please... The prospect of a country already idiotic and oblivious enough, getting more idiotic and oblivious for months to come, is very depressing. I wish people could use their brain a little. Juuuust a little.

PS: Mods, I'm french, I can insult my idiotic and oblivious country to my heart content! :p

You must be fun at parties.

No "probably" about it.

Glad we cleared that up.

Well done France, two good goals. Shame Croatia weren't allowed to take it to extra time.

Case in point that even with VAR, football referees are still ****

I think the handball was a hard one to call however I think the VAR decision might of been right, it might not of looked too deliberate from the back but the other angle you do see him slapping the ball.

The Griezmann dive which led to the own goal before that was shameful though.

The issue is that VAR can only be used by the ref when a 'clear and unmistakable error' has been made by the referee. When the referee himself needed to look over and over at it in slow-motion, then walks away and returns to it again to look some more; it clearly wasn't a 'clear and unmistakable error'. The penalty could have been given (I wouldn't, but its a grey zone kinda thing) but its the random use of VAR against the regulations that is the problem. Some countries got shafted because a clear foul was simply not acted on, and others are shafted when non-clear maybe-errors are acted upon. It adds more arbitrary nonsense whereas it should reduce it. And in this case its doubly weak because the free kick that led to the 1-0 was a dive, and should have been a yellow for griezmann. That was a clear and obvious mistake by the ref...

Ooops, totally forgot the finals was today, just returned from space. Aside from that I can't remember any worldcup before that folks around here had so little interest in. However...

Congratulations to France

and Patrick, enjoy the party.
