Come on Frontier, its time we had MB4 Mining Machines.
Perhaps stop work on one of the dozens of combat focused updates and ask one of your staff to throw miners some scraps and give us MB4's?
To be honest I am very much against MB4.
I think adding passive mining mechanics that do not involve direct player interaction is a bad idea for a game in which making money has already become easier and easier over time.
But...
I definitely want planetary mining! Very much so.
What I would like is active planetary mining gameplay with the help of a specialized mining SRV.
I imagine some kind of vehicle with a big drill that can reach the ore just below the surface of the planet.
We would need a cool planetary prospecting mechanic for that too. Several cool proposals concerning such a prospecting mechanic have been made by smart community members.
I totally get where you are coming from on the passive part, and do not want passive income in the game either, but I think something like an MB4 could be implemented in a way that it requires as much interaction as any other form of mining, maybe even more. The upcoming surface scanning changes could incorporate the only available way to find a spot in which an MB4 would produce. Ad to that some sort of SRV gameplay to drop the thing in the right spot, as well as a healthy timer for it to actually produce, and you have flying to an area, finding a sight, deploying a miner, then returning to collect. While the actually filling of the MB4 with ore would be passive, the steps taken to achieve the rewards would make it far from a passive activity/income.
Interesting points. I think you might be right, nevertheless I personally strongly prefer a cool mining SRV. The player is doing the actual mining that way.
The added advantage of personal SRV based planetary mining is that FDev won't have too worry about persistence in a multiplayer environment based on instances.
