Splitter components for optional internals, and weapon mounts

A simple suggestion, one that has probably been done before, is a bay splitter, that allows a single internal bay to be separated into a pair of the next class down. These would be most useful for limpet controllers and scanner hardware. Other uses might be optimising space around an SRV bay or SLF bay in cases where the best fit bay for these is a class too big. This would allow the other half of the space be used for cargo or hull/module reinforcements.

The other suggestion is a weapon hardpoint splitter. essentially a common armature (Easiest implimentation is probably the armature that the AX missiles come mounted to,) onto which a pair of smaller weapons (class 1 for a class 3 mount, class 2 for class 4) can be fitted. In most fixed hardpoint solutions, the larger weapon would probably be superior, however, for turrets, a paired mount of smaller weapons may prove superior. In particular if said mounting didn't suffer the -20% damage penalty. Piercing would be affected, though raw dps would generally work out to about the same. It would also allow for paired rails or class 2 plasma on turret mounts, or the use of turreted multicannons on large and huge hardpoints.

On the topic of turreted weaponry, an observation: Most people probably don't make a lot of use out of turrets, because every weapon mount on every ship is aligned to fire forward. Some ships have hardpoints that might be useful for fitting turrets, but this detracts from forward firepower.

I may be wrong, but I think module racks/splitters are already coming, mainly for scanners (exploration) and limpets (mining). Can’t remember if this has been confirmed or was just an idea FD are thinking about. May not be exactly what you were hoping for but it’s a start...

I do think it’s a shame that turrets get hit so hard with the nerf bat compared to fixed/gbl. The few times I have used them were fun, I may experiment with them more...

No. Reinforcements of either type MUST NOT be allowed in splitters. Run the math, their stats are broken if you can put in multiple small ones. Far superior to one large.

And really, you don't lose enough splitting things, if you could make a class 8 into two class 7 bays. I could see splitting a class 8 into a pair of class 4 bays, or 2/2/2/2 bays, though. That's definitely lossy.

Okay, so module racks for dedicated hardware are probably incoming, so I'll rest that argument for now.

What about the suggestion for the turrets/weapons. First of all, a paired mount would allow an easy way to bring rails and missiles into the larger weapon mounts, benefiting ships like the Vulture, if they can handle the heat of such weapons. Secondly, for defensive turrets, the paired weapons could offer better DPS and faster tracking of smaller ships, at the expense of hull piercing, when compared to a larger single weapon. That would make the choice down to whether the CMDR wants turrets for offense or defense.
Thirdly, it could offer a way to install weapons that would traditionally be unavailable as turret or gimbal mounts, like rail and plasma, but be restricted to manned operation of turrets, or low piercing gimbals.

Just want to check - is there some sort of rota for people to post this suggestion each day?

I don't know. It just seems very likely that every time something like this is posted the person who posted it came up with their version of the idea independently....

I support the idea of splitting internal compartments. Dividing a size 4 into 2 size 2's for example would be the way I think would be best and makes the most sense.

I probably wouldn't be in support of hardpoint splitting. It might just be the ships I use and how I play the game, but I just don't see the value in it.

Oh, when I suggest a split hardpoint, I mean a mounting for a pair of the same weapon system. So not fitting, say, a rail and a pulse laser or anything like that. The value in such a mount would be a way to mount rails or missiles on large mounts, mounting higher DPS but lower piercing turrets, or mounting rails or smaller plasma on turrets.
