Naming POI Discoveries?

no... cause each place will have already its own name i guess....

if its an unpopulate system, the planets will be named like 1, 2 , etc.

Thank you. You're 100% correct - he talks about it from 14 minutes 40 seconds in, and if I understood him correctly it'll be limited to procedurally generated POIs. So this should include the planets, satellites, asteroid belts and comets in the hand crafted star systems (excluding those at the core) and pretty much everything in the PG systems.

I wonder if and when star ports appear in a newly discovered system, we will be able to name them too?

I believe the 140,000 or so "hand crafted" systems are named already, and we do not get to name. But if you are able to travel some 20,000 ly out into the procedurely generated part of the galaxy, you can name the system/planets, assuming of course we are not trying to name it **** McGee, or Hootie McBoob system or some other bit of silliness.

Excellent! I wholeheartedly agree with sensible name rules. :)

Do you think the planets and other POIs in the hand crafted systems will be named by Frontier? I was assuming they would be PG and thus nameable by the discovering Commander.

To be honest...no clue. Just speculating myself.

I believe the hand crafted systems are derived from real data, so are essentially already named by astronomers. So it would be a bit confusing to have Sirius renamed for example. So that's why I think they are limiting it to unknown systems, which means you get to be an explorer.

Anyone for a "5 year mission, to boldy split infinitives"?

Be able to name a unknown systems, would be disconcerting, if later in the real, scientists attribute a official name for these same systems

Seeing how many crappy commander names there are already, I dread the day (if it comes) when players can name anything other than themselves and their ships.

I would assume (and hope) that there will be some kind of approval process before actual implementation of names.
I will be one of the explorers having a blast naming things, but I will also try to keep the names within reason :) and FD are within their rights to deny any name they don't approve of.

Hmm, well although DB has said that people will be able to name stuff I don't see how this ties in with the pledges from Kickstarter - people paid (relatively) obscene amounts of money to name things on the understanding these were "limited edition". If they suddenly introduce free naming then it makes a mockery of those people's contribution.

It's been suggested previously that things are named automatically by the game engine and that the explorer's details are noted in a page/tab of the object info somewhere - along the lines of "originally mapped by CMDR XYZ" or whatever. Personally I think this is more than enough.

As far as I could gather from DB's video commentary it was only the PG content OUTSIDE of the "known/inhabited galaxy" that we could name. The stuff with the long cartography sector names I think. The Kickstarter backers that you mention could name core systems/space stations I believe. There is a difference.

I don't know, to me it is plenty alright to allow naming of the systems that are waaay out there. It is not like tons of people are going to ever see them :)

I know it is not strictly necessary for us to be able to name systems, but it would be a really nice feature, one that would probably keep me playing more than if it wasn't in.

True.

There are some reasons to look at the ability of naming systems/planets/POIs with caution:

  • Pledge rewards were quite expensive - if anyone can easily be an explorer (and with 400 billion star systems it should be easy to discover something new), then the few hundred pounds the pledge cost equates to a few minutes of playtime...
  • The naming of the systems will need policing. And the even if they are passable (not offensive) it is far from being good
  • There is a question of balance between activities - if all are mostly equally profitable, the added value of naming stuff will make exploration the most interesting occupation
  • It is not "realistic" - AFAIK very rarely the discoverers freely named discoveries, at least regarding important stuff - discoverers didn't "own" the naming rights (true that many places were named after discoverers, but not necessarily by them/with the agreement of the sponsor).
  • Names change with the passage of time
