Spaceports only have one entrance.

This might have been discussed before, however I am unsure to what search words to use.

Can anyone tell me if there is a realistic explanation for there just being one entrance to the spacestations? Shouldn't there at least be two, one for entering and one for leaving?

You enter or leave on the side of the slot with the green lights - that side has red lights in the other direction.

Edit: in the picture below, the red lights are on the left and the green lights are on the right.

The reason there is only 1 entrance is because the stations power plant and other heavy machinery is on the other end of the station (easiest seen on the O'Niell cylinder stations, the Coriolis ones probably have the same kind of deal). This is so as to keep the moving ships as far away from that area as possible.
And on a rotating station, you cannot get in any other way, unless you have extremely crazy flying skills.

You all talk about the red and green lights, but I don't think that's what he's asking.

I also find it odd why a station that (in real life) cost endless amounts of credits to make only limit itself to just one entrance. Having 2 exits would make it difficult for players\scum to camp stations if their victims could just leave out of the side they are not at ;-)

Sure there is some in fiction reason for this choice.....

EDIT: The guy above me kinda just answered it lol

Yes.

I can only assume that the original lore is why we still have one entrance and the hazard of making it out is to increase excitement?

I mean there is no discernable traffic control, is there?

Because griefers never check the back door?

There were too many time zones in the ginormous stations so they made one hole so everybody could know what time it was.... ...but don't quote me on that

There is a great in-game explanation for why the doors aren't round by BeelBeeBub (6th post down).

If you are looking for a reason (in-game) as to why there aren't 2 doors, much of the same reasoning could be applied.

If you are looking for a real reason why the game was developed this way, best I could guess is to make the game more exciting as has been said above. That, and it looks like the original game had this design, as well, so unlikely they'd depart from it. (See the pic on the wikipedia page of the coriolis station.)

Well that's fine, unless you are colour blind and cannot tell green from red!

Easy.

You just enter on the right side, but be careful because if you're upside down then the right side is the wrong side! That's kind of the downside of not knowing which side is up in space!

There. Sorted!

Also, on those stations with holographic ads out front, they should be right-side-up.

LOL..ok thats kinda cool.

The traffic rules are still reminiscent of southern Asia though :)

It's easier to guard a station with one main entrance. You don't see that many English castles with multiple large entrances. It would make them more open to attack. Well, that's my theory anyway. :)

"Again I say to you, it is easier for an Anaconda to go through the eye of a starport, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

(With apologies to Matthew 19:24.)

hehe +1

Even if there were two doors you can bet someone would use the wrong one!!

Please! Watch where you're going, use low speeds on approach, follow indicator lights and give way to large Anacondas!! :D

IIRC the docking-into-a-mailbox-slot-that-turns is inspired by the movie 2001:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3oHmVhviO8

Looking at it again, I do notice that space station seems to have a similar slot at the opposite side from where the spacecraft is coming from.

And, also, that the second ring hasn't been completed. The hub in the middle also looks too small for the ship to fly through, therefore it's probably a second docking port, rather than an exit. Good spot though, I never noticed this when I first watched the film.

I wonder if FD have any plans to make something similar. Two docking ports = more mayhem = more threads ... :D
