In another thread Henry Krinkle used the term sycophancy to describe the general attitude of many contributors to this, the Elite forum. I decried it, not because I thought it untrue, but because I felt it distracted attention from the main thrust of his post, ie. the lack of any hard information from Frontier vis a vis the release of Elite IV. I begin to realise I was wrong.
When the Elite forum first started there were many contributors, excited by the prospect of a new release of their favourite game. Two years on the great majority of posts come from a small handful, characterised by their, shall we say, uncritical nature.
This is no longer an Elite forum. It's a club for sycophants; utterly moribund and utterly sterile; forever plumbing new depths of witlessness, triviality and, well, sycophancy. What's needed here is not sycophancy but a more critical approach.
Smars said..."Plenty of game-projects have failed or run into serious trouble because they made a poor first public display - and I, nor David, nor anyone else at Frontier wants Elite IV to join that group.
So for us, not divulging something is right now a matter of necessity and not something that we do out of habit. Historically I suppose it is fair to say that Frontier has been a company that keeps silent and that is something that I hope will change. When the time comes we will look at doing a dev diary etc, but only when the time comes.
I am not going to ask anyone here to be happy about it, but I do hope that you can understand."
I think, Smars, you're avoiding what in my view is the main point here. It's been TWO YEARS and not only do we not yet have a game we haven't had a single piece of hard information. "When the time comes (you'll) look at doing a dev diary". When the time comes ???!!! When do you think it will come ?? I thought it had come and gone already.
Smars asks for our understanding. Well, I understand that the Elite forum was established in the knowledge that it could only lead to a burgeoning of interest in Elite IV, and I understand that after two years we're entitled to say "OK, we're interested, now what's happening ?"
It's clear that Frontier are very considerate of themselves and careless of us. I suggest a review of this position. Have a good hard look at the forum guys, see what's become of it and reflect upon the implications.
One last word to the sycophants, (you know who you are).......Your response is predictable, I hope you won't feel offended if I don't reply. I certainly won't feel offended if you don't respond.
