Hardware & Technical New GPU Or Wait for GTX 1160?

Looking for some advice about whether I should get a new GPU now or wait a few more months.

I'm currently using a HD 7870xt but it really struggles with a lot of games these days and I'm simply fed up with it. I was going to get a GTX 1060 6GB because they are also including a 240GB SSD which is always useful to have. However, it sounds like the 1160 range will possibly be coming out towards the end of October. Is it probable that the 1160's will be quite a bit more money as well as being difficult to get hold of at launch? Should I just grab a 1060 deal now instead of waiting another 3,4 or 5 months?

1160 will definitely be a little more expensive

But 1060 6GO and with a 240GB SSD offered is a good deal

However 1160 will certainly be much more powerful than 1060 ...

Cruel dilemma

Your estimated budget until the end of the year can help you make your decision

From opinions I'd read it sounds like the 1160 will be roughly equivalent to a 1070 so I looked at some benchmark comparisons for a 1070 vs 980 and a 1060 vs 970, on average it was 18% and 11% increase respectively.

I think I might just bite the bullet and improve my gaming situation now as opposed to later. With the value of the SSD it effectively drops the card to £215 which I don't think is too bad at all. Going by the 1060's release price it seems quite possible the GTX 1160 will be closer to £275-£300 at release, so I'd be saving almost 30% for a 10-15% performance loss.

At the moment we have no idea what the new cards will be like. There are reports that the 1180 will be 10-15% better then the 1080ti.

There have been reports that the 1170 is on par with the 1080ti. If that is the case, I can see the 1160 being close to the 1080 in performance.

Difficult to know which reports are accurate and which are not.

All the reports ive seen for the 1180 put it somewhere within 1-2% of the 1080ti. I can't see it being 15% faster since it has the same number of cores, and a reported 13Tf of compute performance (the 1080ti averages 14-14.5Tf). I'd does have faster memory going for it though gddr6 Vs gddr5x.

I wouldn't consider an 1160 that massively better than a than.
At best it will be comparative to a 1070.

And I would be very surprised if the performance boost between 11 and 10 was anywhere near that between 9 and 10.

But if there are only a few months before a new release. I always recommend holding out.
There are always going to be a few new tricks and whatnot added in the new generation and its always more fun to be in the new level of the club.

Buy the current generation after the 1160 has been released.

According to a short article I read over lunch, pricing for these new cards is going to be interesting until at least December. The dealers reportedly still have large stocks of the 10xx series, but don't want to drop their prices, so the 11xx series will initially have to be more expensive, just to get the remaining 10xx shifted. Next thing is that nobody knows how/if the bitcoin miners will take up the 11xx series cards, so the manufacturers are at a loss regarding the production planning - could be the new cards will clog the shelves because of their pricing w/ respect to the 10xx cards, or could be they'll be virtually unavailable because the miners will hog the few that are available.

The usual problem with IT equipment. You'll hate yourself, whatever you do. Stuff is always becoming cheaper (well, yes, ok, RAM prices not regarded....) and better 6 months down the road. I'd say buy what's available when you want/need it. It'll be obsolete half a year later in every case.

I see that the AMD RX 570/580 have also dropped and I was quite tempted to get a 570 for £210 or 580 8GB for £260 as I also want a new monitor and the freesync would have been very nice.
But in the end I went for the 1060 6GB instead, it works out at the same price of the 570 but quite a bit better performance and my daughter can make use of the SSD in her laptop. I know what I'm like, if I put it off I'd miss all the deals and be left waiting another 6 months or more :)

Yeah i think this is my path. GTX 1060's (6GB) are still not at the price they entered the market in (2 years ago now? or more?), unless you snap up a flash sale from somewhere, and are willing to settle for maybe a brand you were not looking for. Likely to see much better deals when the new cards are here, i'm a practical man for things like this :)

What price two years ago ?

iirc it was around £230 at launch (so about 250 USD and EUR?), and actually just having a look on amazon.co.uk I can see nearly all the 1060 6GB have BIG discounts that bring them to around that kind of level. Cool, it was not this extensive a price drop last week! So we got stuff like:

A Zotac 1060 6GB AMP (dual fan card) for £239 (reduced from £380!).
A EVGA 1060 6GB Super clocked (single fan) for £254 (was £356!).
A Asus 1060 6GB (Arctic-white dual fan) for £248 (was £377!).
A Gigabyte 1060 6GB (windforce dual fan) for £259 (was £349!).

That AMP! for £239 looks like the best deal perhaps? Although it does have a design flaw and you need to pull off some decorative metal strips that might fall off inside your PC otherwise (details in the reviews at amazon).

So the range of discounts on amazon.co.uk is pretty good right now. I still feel like waiting for the new cards from Nvidia though as those prices 'might' drop a little more?

Yes the prices on the 1060 6GO return to their original prices

They should be even cheaper cause the card is "old" now
