While the 2 games are extremely different on their focus and their approach to "space" (I'm calling it space in NMS just for the sake of argument), I always hoped that the initial sales success of NMS would serve as an example that FD would have a lot to gain by investing in the exploration part of the game. Unfortunately that didn't happen yet.
FD's representation of space and the galaxy is a billion light years ahead of NMS (and any other space game), now if they would take notice in the blatant huge market in search of a decent space exploration game, and managed to invest in ED's greatest asset (the galaxy) to expand this part of the game much further, they could swallow that market easily.
