The Star Citizen Thread v9

It is just the common term to describe something having x G of thrust to describe it's thrust to mass ratio?

No. It's a common term to describe acceleration, which is what it is. If it's used to describe thrust or TWR, then it's just used incorrectly (which, I suppose is unfortunately common). If you want to describe acceleration in common terms, you use acceleration — it's not a particularly difficult concept — just like how if you want to describe thrust, you use thrust.

But that's the point....it IS a common way to describe thrust. It is technically inaccurate, but Chris isn't speaking to a technical conference. Nitpicking about his choice of words is just that...nitpicking....and is an action that reinforces the argument that some people go out of their way to criticise.

Star Citizen has more than enough issues - technical, legal and otherwise - that people don't need to look far to criticise some aspect. The engine is not functionally complete, critical design work hasn't been done, the marketing and fundraising campaigns are definitely shady, not to mention the use of Hollywood accounting so I won't...the lack of effective management or planning, the reported work conditions, the fact CIGS own devs appear (at times) to disparage their own game or make fun of their own boss...CryTeks lawsuit and the refund issues...the poor gameplay and future concerns over game mechanics and gameloops...and more.

There is no reason to make fun of him for describing thrust in what is a common manner.

Yeah, thruster capable of generating max acceleration of 6 gs

As in a Ship with thruster capable of generating max acceleration of 6Gs need not worry about sub 1 g gravity on moons, nor thin atmospheres

If one is not talking about any given ship how does one specify the newtons needed?

He kind of is. He's talking about the technical details that go into the design consideration for what was at some point hawked as a very simulationist and realistic take on space combat. It's not really nit-picking — it's pointing out the inconsistency in the communication, while further reinforcing the notion that Chris simply isn't able to discuss these matters from any position of knowledge or authority.

It's a continuation of the fool he made of himself by trying to argue that you could create momentum, and there is every reason to make fun of him for describing thrust in a highly inaccurate manner.

If one is not talking about any given ship how does one specify the newtons needed?

Simple: you don't. That's what got them into this whole mess.

They have non-1G moons?

Given that the existing moons look like they should be populated by Mr Spoon and a load of Clangers, I have doubts.

At the moment landed ships are mass less (and can be flipped over by ramming them with a golf cart basically), and on-foot action is standard run of the mill crytek engine FPS (i cannot see any effect of local gravity), with the only exception of zero-G areas. So it's either 1G or 0G. I'd be ok with that and suspend my disbelief if not for the fanbase claiming for magic artificial gravity systems (that are everywhere on ships even when powered down, also on planets) or them claiming we all wear magnetic shoes (these do exist but walking with them is very clunky and forget about running at all.. also how do they work on planets ?).
Also there is no apparent effect on ships, but the quite overpowered thrusters will not help finding any difference here. I suppose Daymar would have a much stronger gravity than the other moons but i didnt really feel that.

I don't really care if he speaks about Newtons or G's!
But when CR's own Lead Designer asks the boss via YouTube video about the boss' vision of the future flight models there is a serious breakdown in internal communication.
The video shows (starts at 10 min 03 seconds)how host Disco Lando is telling CR that their Lead Vehicle Designer John Crewe really wanted to hear the answer. If your own Lead Designer has to go to such measures to get an answer I really don't want to know how the usual internal communication is handled. Jeez.

Whenever I want to ask a technical question, I always put it to a third party to ask on a video blog. That's just how things work these days.

Opens another beer.

in related news a competitive space MMO hosted a massive space battle with more then 4500 participants at the same time in the same "zone"....the 50 player instance by Star Citizen suddenly sound very pathetic :)

My google fu may be lacking due to to the heat wave. I tried to find this, thought it was mayhaps Dual Universe or IN Battlescape, but havent found it. Care to share a link?

When I was still working, we had such ancient things like meetings where we smoked chain and gobbled the coffee in liters and as a side effect we got answers.
I'm getting to old for this sh...

It's the blind being lead by the deaf. CR probably can't relay his vision to his own developers as it changes from week to week. Their goalposts not only move, they have quantum drive!

Titanic--->all ahead flank--->Iceberg
It's really sad to say it, but with a capable lead this game could have been a smashing success but instead they have this micromanaging muppet.

Ah ok, fair, that one was well known indeed, was wondering if Fritz was referring to any of the new up and coming games that also claim netcode miracles.

you mean the game I take it? The news is 4 days old, it cant be "well known". Still.....multiple thousands players interacting still is a feat even for that grandpa of a game :)

I mean relative to Star Citizen sure the visual fidelity is inferior (tho I still think EVE ships look awesome....) but CiG developers already discussed restricted rendering or selective loading of assets depending on server load and thinking about other ways to save processing power and they barely make 50 per instance. While the performance in recent months has been improved said improvement didnt come from superior code but by snipping other stuff so the SC alpha is currently walking in one spot trying to polish the hell out of itself in order to pass whatever "test" release might hold. Talks about 200 players per instance are just that at this point, a wet dream. Without improving the underlying code alltogether, something CiG has proven to be unable to do in the last 6 years (right now SC is pretty much a Crytech stock out-of-the-box game with mods) they will only be able to increase playercount by cutting other things if they dont want to lose performance. So more players = uglier game and thats a route CR cannot go as his whole scam is based on nifty pictures.

While its true that the "other" game doesnt provide a smooth player experience for all participants either theres a distinct difference in performance involved. You have lag bordering on minutes but you dont glitch out and you are in a massive space battle with 4500 people. Its impressive and its pushing boundaries. Thats the community stretching and testing the games limitations to its maximum and seeing the game perform without crashing or glitching out deserves admiration and leaves me in awe.

Where exactly is Star Citizen pushing boundaries?Except for hollow promises it didnt deliver on any of the groundbreaking inventions and advancements it promised back in 2012. For the last 6 years Star Citizen has lived off its grand vision without realizing a single one of them. At the very front is always the highly polished alpha or better said.....tech-demo assets acting as the carrot on the stick making you board the hype train and falling into the trap that is the vision. For all accounts it seems that what we have right now (Alpha 3.2.2) represents the absolute maximum Star Citizen can accomplish.

Meanwhile... some of us are having tons of fun with our space legs.

It certainly is possible to have fun with Star Citizen....people have fun with PONG today. Whats your point?
