Trying to find the HGE's is a gargantuan waste of player time and a monumentally flawed "time sink" design choice in a game where the magnitude of RNG and zero-stimulation game play has reached momentous levels.
There is NOTHING fun about floating around in space hoping some random thing will appear on your scanner while there is literally NOTHING you can do other than WAIT.
If we were actually PLAYING the game and ACTIVELY using tools, mechanics or game features to locate these sites then this would be more interesting since you are PLAYING the game and applying some level of skill requiring you to think, make decision and otherwise ENGAGE with the game and be ACTIVE.
Instead we are INACTIVE, doing NOTHING, while employing ZERO skill and ZERO decision making and ZERO game play until some USS pops up on the list.
I really hate to keep referring to EVE Online but at least the exploration / scanning system there requires the player to, oh I dunno, PLAY THE GAME.
Elite on the other hand = be INACTIVE and wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. I probably watched ALL episodes of Game of Thrones AND Scrubs AND about a dozen other shows on my 2nd monitor while "playing" Elite.
The USS system for finding materials is the absolutely largest pile of donkey-doo-doo that I have been exposed to.
Why is there no actually game play for this? Why can't we deploy and control sensors, or buy new better sensors, or buy modules that improve signal strengths and so forth?
I am so ' annoyed at this atrocious system that even just replying to the issue puts me off playing the game for another 4 months.
