Introducing Galpad - A VR companion app (virtual PDA)

So I've been working on this for sometime now, it's still very much a work in progress and isn't in its current state "feature complete".

Essentially Galpad is a touch driven virtual PDA which is usable from within your cockpit. Think 'Elite Smartphone'... It allows you to access game centric information which is, for the most part, otherwise inaccessible from within your cockpit as well as having some other nice features such as a built in touch based keyboard which sends its inputs directly to the game.

Here is a video of it in action:

I apologise for any frame jerks, I'm no video editor and capturing the game in VR seemed to a take a toll on my frame rates from time to time!

Galpad is nowhere near release ready at this time and 'borrows' many in game assets such as sound effects. Obviously if I ever did decide to release a version of it, these would have to be stripped out. I guess this is more of a demonstration of what you can achieve with Oculus Dash and a little imagination more than anything else.

Hope you enjoy!

that does look cool - shame my machines performance drops to a unacceptable level when using dash, I think I might be at it's usable limit without it.

Question, how did you do the shutdown, startup function at the begenning? that looked very cool.

:)

nice integration.

what happens at about 8:38? it actually looks like you're moving the joystick with your touch controller. that's just a little prank, right? :D

Well thanks everyone. Still a way to go with the apps development, I have some ideas for other functionality and a few little bugs to iron out.

The shutdown / startup sequences are pretty simple in the scheme of things. It's a sequence of scripted CTRL+ALT+G key presses to correspond with the audio. I really do miss the ability to cold start ships in this game, it was the closest I could get to it. If you shutdown when docked a variable is written to an ini file which is read when you next start the game, and the HUD off key combo is sent to the game at the main menu screen ensuring your HUD is off when the game loads. If you don't shutdown on logout the game starts with the HUD active.

nice integration.

I wish, but sadly no, it's just me moving the joystick with my Touch still in hand. I didn't do it on purpose but I did notice that during editing and hoped it would go unnoticed....

Saw you posting about it in the other thread. Love it. Definitely interested in taking it for a spin if I can get Dash working correctly again.

This puts FD to shame.

Frontier, you should be ashamed of yourself! Why can't you improve on the VR interface? Look what this guy has done. You should be ashamed FD!

Maybe because FD is concerned with the entire software package and not focused on this specific aspect?

I wonder if there is some (easy) way to link this to voice attack or similar... I think being able to dictate to the keyboard mode would be very useful... One piece of feedback I would like to add if I may, is to allow the user to resize the pad in some way, in order to perhaps increase the keyboard size a bit - although now I'm typing ... I assume you can do that using Dash anyway.... :D

Also, I imagine this can be used with just the oculus remote pointer... that might be easier than fumbling for the touch controller during flight....

Looks awesome in any event, and I think many people will be very grateful for a working in-game touch keyboard.

I'm pretty sure you can dictate to Elite already using voice attack. Yeah you can just resize the app to what ever you want it to be using the build in Dash features.

I'm kinda wondering if I can get the keyboard working via HOTAS mapping as well so you could pin it and then forgot about looking for your Touch controllers.

That would be pretty good yes. I can definitely see good thing coming from this app :D

Looks great! Now, if you could integrate an eddb.io app into it some how, it'd be a real must have.
