General / Off-Topic My name is Elba. Idris Elba

We're not talking dumb plots though. We're talking character revision. Now, if they were saying that due to some genetic experiment by some super villain (maybe someone objecting to Brexit) and everyone in Britain was now black - that'd be hilarious! I'd totally support that. There would be some awesome social commentary, parody and comedy in that film! I'd 100% nominate Idris for the role then.

Agreed. He has the perfect cool and commanding presence for the role.

I don't know, Un1, we've had black action heroes for years now. I think the casting choice is less about diversity and more about the right man for the job. He would be my first choice for the role.

True, but there's action heroes, then there's Bond. Bond is a whole 'nother level.

Either way it's a total win, as Mr Elba is defo' one of the best actors, if not the best, right now.

Personally I don't think of colour these day. I just see a person, and if they just so happen to work for that role, then I don't care about the colour of their skin.

Now if James Bond was a period piece set in the 50's, then yes I would expect JB to be of pale skin. But as JB is now in modern day times I really do no care about the colour of their skin or even their gender.

Personlly I would actually like to see them do a period James Bond and have a series of films set in the 50's and 60's.

Black Bond. About time to break the stereotype on this kind of character.

I approve. :)

But the stereotype *is* the character. I therefore disagree...

In the novels, James Bond was expelled from a posh school for being naughty.

James Bond the character is the way he is because of a specific turn of events. He didn't begin as a womaniser. He met someone, fell in love and got married quickly, but then Mrs Bond got shot dead shortly after the wedding on the way to their honey-moon. James Bond as a character developed largely from that single event. He can't be close to anyone because that would bring them directly into harm's way. This is James Bond. Sure, it isn't something which fits with the modern liberal ideology, but it's that way for a very good reason, regardless of whether it is compatible with contemporary societal views or not.

It would be better, in my view, to make a new character that could be played by any ethnicity or sex of actor. This new character could even be a double-O agent and have supporting cast, ideas and story-lines directly from the bond films, be a British agent, reporting to M and supported by Q division, etc, etc... Just don't call them James Bond. That's a bit rubbish.

He's too old, you need to get at least 3 films out of a Bond. He's 45 already and with 2-3 years between films he'll be pushing 51-52 on his 3rd film which is well into the Roger Moore aged roles of Bond. Daniel Craig is 50 now and he's giving up. Bond needs to be played by an actor around 35-40 at the most.

James Norton will probably be the next bond and Tom hardy (Who tops Norton) will be a bit old for the role thanks to Daniel Craig.

Bond uncovers plans for the President of the USA to give America to the Russians to avoid being blackmailed with what he got up to in a Russian hotel

Hmmm ! This is the special relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States ?

Bond will save America ?

Look Tom Cruise 56 years. He just played in the new "Mission: Impossible"

:)

Let's be honest....the only thing that REALLY matters is Ben Whishaw continues as Q....cause that was brilliant casting.

Special forces though should not involve women, only in The Special Reconnaissance Regiment. It's in the name. Leave the heavy work to the men.

Particular sex/gender shouldn't be a prerequisite for much of anything. Set relevant, objective, criteria, and take anything that passes. Anything else does both a disservice to the position and those that could have qualified for it.

Ian Fleming was known of his not-so-hidden racism in his books and this would make Mr. Fleming turn in his grave.. :D

No one cares what Ian Fleming would do or want, least of all a Hollywood that is trying to sell a franchise to people who don't even know who Ian Fleming is.

The idea of setting Bond in his natural habitat, the late 50's/early 60's is great. It allows Bond to keep all his misogyny without it appearing weird.

Might make a good Bond film, but probably not a good return on investment.
