What has ED forced you to do?

We probably all have some stories to tell, some small, some epic. So this is mine, seeing that i was not going to be able to play the game on my current gaming rig (a +decade old, but nippy, XP Pro based system).

It's an external link to the tech forums on RPS (cause it is good to share your tech knowledge to aid others etc):

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/forums/showthread.php?15503-Economical-gaming-mini-ITX-build

So i just wanted to say thanks to Frontier and David for putting me through that.......thanks a lot. ;)

I have also been forced to buy a joystick, a third monitor, an ED Tracker and am now looking at a third R9 290X and a Haswell-E setup to better the experience at 6400x1440.

not forced, but i did buy whole setup for ED, new power source, gpu (and will upgrade in years to come so i can play on 4k), playseat, x55, rudder, trackir...this game is expensive :)

but then it will be played for a decade and some of this stuff can be used for all/some other games, anyway it all depends how much time are you willing to spend on ED and not how many games are you playing, saying that 'i don't want to buy hotas for one game" doesn't make sense if you are playing only that game for more than 5 years ... so all depends on perspective.

It forced me to buy Track IR 5 - was using Freetrack for all my sims beforehand.

I wasn't aware of ED tracker at the time and even if I was, I'm pretty sure I was ready for something plug and play after all that Freetrack fiddling.

Forced at Game Point to but an X55, TrackIr, VoiceAttack, new surround sound headset, parts to construct my own point model for open track on my laptop, new desk to hold the massive hotas and huge keyboard (that I already had).

AND to cap it all, still held at Game Point, to spend many hours having fun in a beta game.

Its criminal.

It's forced me to seriously consider getting a DK2, when I was originally dead set on waiting for the CV1 before dipping into home VR.

:p

I've calculated by the end of the year I'll have spent nearly £1000 on a single game.

* Elite: Dangerous - £100
* X55 - £170
* New Keyboard - £80
* DK2 - ~ £300

The remainder will be made up from upgrading my GPU - either one of the new GTX800 series, or a GTX780ti, depending on what turns out better for the DK2 after the 800s come out. I'm holding off till then to upgrade.

-Ordered DK2
-Removed steering wheel from cockpit for better view on monitor - It's all space games till November...

Excellent thread! Cheers!! :)

When I saw ED coming to fruition with Alpha, I raided my bank account and built my own rig to play it on and ED: PB + expansion pass. I already own a Triton pro surround headset (taken from Xbox set up) and am hoping to buy a hotas and rudders (Logitech Thrustmaster T.Flight, because I can't "justify" the X52 or Warthog ... drool), TrackIR (may get a VR headset ... drool), and Voice Attack.

Explaining why to my wife is proving tricky ...

Spend £65 on Beta access and goodie bundle

Spend circa £40 on Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas

New laptop is a bit jumpy so may need to upgrade a couple of things

Lost a fair chunk of social life at night time!!!

All in all a decent deal me thinks :p

Nothing more than dusting off my joystick, really (Logitech Extreme 3D Pro). It's a couple of years old at this point (the previous one I had, a Cyborg F.L.Y. 5 fell apart within a few months despite having only been used for maybe a week or so of that time), and it's ever so slightly loose, but it still marches on despite the abuse it's suffered. Tempted to get a HOTAS, but can't really justify the cost as i'm only going to be using it on this game, and I can fly perfectly well with just a regular joystick and keyboard.

Lots and lots and LOTS of time.
As for monetary cost. Hmmmmm.
I'm in for a serious PC, the DDF, X-55 and numerous other groovy bits and bobs.
There are another 2 24" panels on the way and I'll be having the OR consumer when it comes out. It's close if not over £3k.
Oh and stuff from the FD store too.

Then some idiot showed me the 4k panels so you can imagine what's coming next.

Since my monolithic Kickstarter drop (£750, £530 of which was elite-stats website income incidentally), I've calmed down somewhat.

New CPU, Athlon 3.4ghz Quad, (~£100)
New GPU, Radeon R9 280X (second hand from eBeg, £130)
New Screen, IIyama 24" 1080p (~£125)

ZOMG! I've spent how much?! Good thing this forum isnt open to the internets, my wife would kill me.

Thanks Zak! You just made me review my irrational ED expenditure! :eek:

Drink even more.

I've lost sixteen ships so far due to my inability to drink and fly.

Playing sober is pleasant and cost effective but not real fun.

Drink even more.
< This... and spend £2,500 on a new Laptop

17.3" Vortex IV Elite SE (Matte, LED Widescreen, full HD)
CPU - i7 Quad Core (i7-4940MX 3.10 GHz, 8MB Cache
RAM - 16GB Kingston hyper-X Impact 1600MHz DDR3
GPUs - 2x GeForce 880M in SLI mode, 2x 8GB of DDR5 video Ram
Drives - 2x 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD

Thanks FD, I'm sure i won't regret it.
