Nobody sane in its mind would cruise the whole system.

Oh ..... !! :D

Sorry about the distance, i get distracted by shiny stuff. :)

There might not be a huge amount of money to make in Canopus but low temp diamonds make a nice bonus to keep the crew paid, while mining up water, oxygen and volatiles for delivery to the lab, in readiness for the cone.

Wow!
This is great! I'm just on my way back into the bubble and I'm 1KLY out! Gotta hurry if I'm going to catch that train!!!!

So much rep flying around in this thread. This is why I hang out with explorers - we're weird, yet civil. Can't wait to see what's out in those closed-off areas - I went that way during my first "major" exploration trip, and was actually trying to get to the Cone Nebula when I discovered I needed to pick a different destination! [noob]

On a related note, does anyone else notice their route plotter get extremely slow whenever you're near restricted sectors? When I tried to go to the Cone Nebula, my route plotter was terribly slow - even though I was simply near, not trying to get through, the restricted sectors. I submitted a bug report, since it was the first time I'd encountered the slowness, and it was shortly after an update. Eventually, I just decided it was due to the proximity of the restricted sectors (which might end up affecting everyone who heads out to the area surrounded by those restricted sectors).

Not tried plotting round there yet, but I notice the plotter is slow even round the current Gnosis location @ 64 Orionis.

Talking of which, has anyone been able to plot a neutron boost using 64 Orionis C? Ive got Jet cone switched on, but my plot to the Eskimo Nebula still ignores it. No difference when trying to replot after supercharging in the cone. Does the plotter only allow neutron boost when the neutron is the primary star in a system? Never noticed otherwise before...

Interesting question - but if the plotter did use secondaries people would be annoyed about the 500k ls SC to get to the NS in this case ;)

This Gnosis destination has brought a revitalization of interest in Elite for me. Thanks for this thread, and for Frontier featuring it in the newsletter.

So I've outfitted my Asp Explorer, and will shortly have completed my Materials trades for Synthesis reserves.

But then the new trailer for Beyond Season 3 appeared, featuring what may be Guardian (IMO) massive structures. Something unknown, anyway. And I began to wonder whether these unknown structures could well be found *within* the inaccessible region of space the Gnosis is visiting?

This possibility leaves me questioning my Asp Explorer. It's a lighter, thin, unarmed, exploration build. And based on the most recent Guardian sites, which do have active and hostile AI defenses... What kind of defenses might such super-structures have? Could my Asp hang around to explore, or be forced away? Maybe I'd do well to take a couple of Medium Lasers. The idea of swapping out to my anti-Thargoid Corvette is probably overkill!

You can outfit your ship at The Gnosis.

Best thing about having a movable base of operations like the Gnosis as an exploration platform is that it opens up ship configurations and choices. You don't need to use the optimal exploration loadout or ship since you'll always have a base nearby!

I'm tempted to take a fully armed asp explorer (55lys), or a battle anaconda (45lys)..

Probably - and shooting them is not exactly constructive.

If you run the usual minimal exploration loadout, you know yourself that your Asp isn't exactly fight worthy. But travelling with the Gnosis has a few advantages: the Gnosis carries an outfitting dock, and you won't need the extreme jump ranges, since she'll do all that tedious long range jumping for you. What I'd do (what I actually did - with my iCourier) is to set your ship up as a heavy fighter (minus the hull, probably - just make sure you don't lose your shields), using some Guardian shield boosters and engineering to max out her shields. Then store that heavy stuff in a station in the bubble, switch over to the jump range configuration, head out to the Gnosis and transfer the fighter equipment over. Some of it you can now install and keep on the AspX, other stuff will take up valuable sensor space, so leave it in the Gnosis until you see you need it.

I can confirm a good supercharge from 64 Orionis C ...
The plotting trick I think is to tick Jump Boost (below Fastest Route - of which Jet Cone is subsidiary).

This is peculiarity when plotting a route out from a neutron/white dwarf star system, as ticking fast route + jet cone will include them in the middle of a route.

You need to actually do the supercharge before Jump Boost will take note of it of course but Jet Cone (part of Fastest Route) stays ticked, so try plotting your full route as usual.

Thanks, I'll try it when I get back from the Eskimo Nebula.

Thx for confirming the respawn option!
This begs the question if it would be considered useful to bring a disposable ship, to not rebuy, in case of the 4 weeks of isolation might be too long in one spot.
