Fiction Why is Sol a "non faction"?

I'm just curious on the backstory on this.

Does Sol simply "not play the fed/empire games"?

Or is Sol like the "Homeworld Sovereign" above all such concerns?


... or is there some juicy history explaining whats going on there?


[side note]
Being an American fan of another UK based game (Warhammer 40k); am I wrong to expect a similar amount of background "fluff" for the Elite Universe?

if you look it up in the galaxy map, then color the stars by Faction, Sol is a blatant and stand-out in its grey (no faction) status

That must be either a bug, or maybe faction capitals have their own colour that you are mixing up with neutral? What do Alioth and Achenar look like?

I imagine it could be one of two reasons;

1. Sol is the human home system, so it may have a special status. Home of the Federation, but also safe for the Empire.

2. It's a bug :) This is the most likely reason.

I suspect an incomplete map. Sol may be being worked on at present. It's definitely the centre of the Federation.

The well of humanity has been poisoned at some level?

Rendered uninhabitable even in the space-lanes. The sun tainted to pump out gamma and other exotic radiations that would kill any space-ships near by.

Zombies not might be far off, What about a bio-virus, or a nanite virus, every biodome, every station, has been infected with a pathogen of some description that sits in the life-support system.

No one goes to sol, even if they did there is no place to land,
no place to dock without getting infected.

It's a ghost system.

A legacy of past mistakes.


Even the mementos of wreckage of the cradle of civilisation isn't worth the cost of fuel to bring back, cursed as it is.

It now clearly showes as federal. and 17 billion inhabitants instead of 122B

What is it with the zombies in games now a days?
If they show up in ED i'll be going to the far side of the galaxy and find a quiet place to role up in a fetal position. Waiting it all out... :eek:

According to Wikipedia Frontier: First Encounters happened between the years 3250 and 3255.
Maybe there are even story-related things that happened in the past 50 years and we will discover them in the release version. Who knows...^^
