PvP Ganks getting more and more out of hand...

We've all seen it and probably been subject to it many times... Ganks are a well known tactic and happen almost at every CG.

We had the ganks done by a few in a wing, then a full wing, and now, the most recent thing (at least, recent for what I've seen...) ganks by multiple wings...

I'm not asking for advices how to "git gud" or not get killed as not HWing against 1, 2 or even 3 wings is guaranteed death (rebuy is no issue, I got plenty, but dying in 30sec is annoying after a few times...)

My question is rather: why?

I mean, okay, in some cases, you need to gang up to get thru those overstacked shields on cutters and the like, it's far easier to kill a target when going in as a team than solo, but why go against a wing of 3 lesser equipped/grind-built ships with 6-10 FDLs, cutters, Corvettes etc?

3 Prismatic FDLs and a Cutter are already a guaranteed win in most gank situations... so why the overkill? And what kind of feeling does it give to the CMDRs in those gank "squads"?

this is no different to the School bully/street gang mentality. don't have the guts to take people on a fair fight, as alone with their insecurity they are worthless.

I am sorry if this offends some. but I believe this sort of event crosses the line from Griefing to borderline online bulling/harassment. one wing is low enough, but numerous? I think there is either an enormous lack of skill or they are deeply insecure.

Unfortunately, this game lacks the real-life authority in such manors, if there was a wing multiplier for punishments then this problem would be solved (as upon death these guys would have such a high bounty pay-off they'd almost be forced to get a new account). and because of Elite's screwed up justice system, there is almost no incentive for people to kill them. so until Elite fixes up their act we can expect this more and more. (and more now that it has been mentioned, now we can expect the copycats to appear...)

FDev, please fix the ED C&P system! this is somehow worse than the Australian justice system (and that is pretty sad).

The ganks make sense. Its human nature. THEY FIND IT FUN. Every single game ever made ever has people trying to be jerks. Name one that doesnt?

THE REAL question is...WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHY PEOPLE GANK?

ITS
DUMB.

REALLY. REALLY DUMB.

Pondering the "why" is pointless. It's a factor that is out of my control, so I don't bother myself with it.

I focus on the factors I can control - watching out for hollow squares in supercruise and how they're behaving, have a high-wake system pre-prepared, having my pips set for the escape before the interdiciton even starts, etc etc.

Why indeed. It gives the powerless a sense of power would be my guess. The solution is simple and obvious. I won't repeat it here because it would just draw in the trolls.

Maybe the question is why don't more people gank?

Frontier have built ED such that PvP is actually part of the game.

So why don't more people do it?

Elite is another world. And in this world, you can be whoever you want.

Same thing happened to me this week. I'm in a A-grade, G5 engineered (all the way) Krait which should give me plenty of time to high wake should the need arise. So I make the mistake of hanging around an extra 5 seconds to gage their tactics, ya know? Before I know it there's more than 4 cutters, FDLs, etc all firing at me and its already too late. FSD reset is all the rage these days. Thus, unless I high wake immediately after getting pulled there's no chance of me avoiding insta death. Not with my piloting skills anyway; never claimed to be a great pilot.

Why?

Because...

Humans.

Part of the answer of "why" is the question "who?" in this specific case. 13th legion is imposing an "embargo" on the CG at Kamici. Maybe they are tired of their bad rep as scrubs and want to change it. Just speculating.

This is a good example of what I invariably find when people try to answer the why - an explanation that disparages those doing the ganking.

Which leads me to believe that the question of why is not one of genuine curiosity - it's an attempt to soothe the ego of the ganked and / or establish a sense of moral superiority over those who gank.

See, I can internet psychology too! \o/

Sounds like something a ganker would say [haha]

"Why or reasons" are irrelevant. What matters is the "how" the game can be played.
Is ganking within the framework of game rules ? yes. Acknowledge it and move on.

Players ganking are playing the game the way they want within the framework of the game rules like any other player can. They have their own reasons that only matters for them and does not require any justifications.

If you desperately need reasons for ganking activity, here are existing and valid ones :

  • fun (purpose of a video game)
  • powerplay
  • BGS
  • Missions
  • roleplay
  • combat rank

Nah, wasn't the 13th, far too organized lol.

But was probably some other imp group as many of them were pledged to ALD or AD.

Funnily enough, in my wing I was the one getting all the attention, so that soothes my ego a bit since they thought it would be better to get rid of me first xD

But now I kind of understand why I see less gank-complaints recently... everyone wings up to gank the potential gankers...

Sometimes the reason for the excessive 'dogpiling' (heh) that you see in ganks is perhaps it's been several minutes since a worthy target (open to interpretation) made its way into system and every ganker there wants to try and get a piece. Sometimes it becomes a race for the kill. Other times, it's a really tanky target and the additional damage is needed to kill it before it can escape.

Regardless, the only reason needed is fun. I make up my mind on a whim about what I want to gank. Big fish are the best but sometimes a smaller one can yield really funny results. I usually avoid starter ships. It's more fun to just ironically spam "Fly safe CMDR O7" at them and watch them hurry up. 😂
