Game's future

So are we scientists now?

Look, we are no geniuses and we aren't writing a peer reviewed paper, steam charts just display more information on the last month or two, it's done because it's not particularly useful to know the amount of players per day over the course of 3 years.

It is if you want to claim that the game is dying. And even then you are still using the wrong numbers.

That's a legitimate concern though that was in 2018 so at least the data from previous years is still precise.

I don't think you write a peer reviewed paper and publish it in a journal about the state of a niche game.

Yes but it doesn't matter. Using SteamSpy in any serious conversation about game's criticism is laughable at this point. As I said I wonder how this is still a thing.

At this point it may be but we still have data from previous years.

So you suggest that the chart was photoshoped to join different timeline scales?

Edit: The OP did nothing wrong, the website indeed has different frecuencies of data points.

Nontheless, if we see the chart of the whole existence of ED, we are currently at a historical minimun and in this chart the frecuency of data points is consistent.

[h=1]Sales≠Average players[/h]

This tells a story that the fans don't want to accept - but it's normal! This is a 4-year old game so of course the player base is in decline. Also the numbers showing folks online are likely the same old hard-core players adding to their 1000's of hours of gameplay. We don't know the ratio or numbers of new vs. existing players. And if anything the decline in players is probably much greater since FDev allows people to buy and use more than one account at a time. (Bizarre... how many other online multiplayer games allow one to use multiple accounts - usually that's called cheating). Many of the fans here have clearly stated they have 2, 3 even 4 accounts to max. out their pip's.

Other hard part about the facts that are available is with FDev intentionally keeping the true numbers hidden and obscured by using the word "franchise" every single time they recite Elite numbers. Note they certainly don't use "franchise" when quoting JWE or PC numbers. Reason is clear, though, as long ago FDev did slip and say that the franchise number includes all sales related to Elite = not just game sales. They count and include Elite d/l paint sales, Elite book sales, Elite sock sales, etc. You just know the fans have bought ton(ne)s of Elite socks right? :D

Funny to try and debate against the fact that an old game is not declining or won't decline in popularity. And Elite isn't a new release.

Up until the begining of 2018 you'd be right.

According to steam charts the beginning of 2018 was the most successful for Elite in terms of active players.

That we don't have to be academically precise for such a silly conversation.

No, but if you want to claim that the game is dying you should at least post a chart that is not completely unrelated.

I'm indeed confident most of their reveneu comes from cosmetics, it seems between my friends I'm the only one who hasn't bought one.

I agree. And it probably pays for the small junior Dev team supporting the game plus adds a bit of profit or what should be called incremental revenue.

Touché

So a chart that registers both average and peak players of Elite Dangerous isn't related to the state of Elite Dangerous?

Silly indeed.

This game won't be dead until Dr Derek Smart says its dead.

This game will be dead for sure when the servers are off.

That's the thing, the chart doesn't show average players.

If it's a niche game and the numbers go up and down a bit, what's the worry? .. it's a niche game, already!!

I don't use steam to play ED btw. But a major thing you hear from people who put the game down is "I'll check in after Beyond Q4". So it's not because they don't like the game, just they want more of. That's not even a remotely bad thing, even if steam numbers are low for a month because many will be back, when more is a thing.

Wrong

Only Dr Smart can call time on Elite.

What's your point?

The up and down behaviour is probably caused by updates just as you mention but that's not inherent of a niche game.
