Game's future

Steam chart thread never fail to upset the white-knights.. "It's not true!" "They lie!" "They're not accurate at showing trends because reasons" [haha]
.

Not really worried about ED's steamchart stats. Being in the top 150 is still consistent and healthy for ED which is now above FarCry5, Kerbal, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and Battletech. The past few weeks also overlapping the NMS-next update drop, showed a decline for ED, but it still seems cyclical with an eventual positive climbing phase. ED also placed in steam's "bronze" bestseller category which was better than all the other space genre niche games (before NMS-Next) If ED dropped below 250 or so in a year, then I'd be more concerned.

The main flaw is they show individual players multiple times... If I was in a T9 doing a trade route and I flew 10 runs, each system traffic report would show 10 T9's.

All the data sources we have for player activity are flawed in some way. Activity at systems I regularly frequent are indicative of one thing, traffic reports at Shinrata or an engineer tell a story, CG activity (both number of participants & local traffic news) say something too.

There is no magic single stat to rule them all ;)

I've found the best indicator of how popular the game is currently is how many of my friends list are logged in when I play on average week to week... at the moment it's about 5-10 out of approx 100. Make of that what you will..

The white knights are not upset about steamcharts but about people who are using the wrong numbers and made up charts.

I'll get worried the first week we go without a doom thread.

The chart in OP is basically made up.

First, the chart shows peak numbers rather than average numbers, which makes it absolutely useless to see trends. All that it can tell us is when a major update was released.

Second, if you look at the chart you'll see that the first half consists of fewer data points than the second half, which again makes it absolutely useless. You can easily see this by taking notice of the flat curve in the first half and the spiked curve in the second half. It doesn't even reflect the reality.

Third, I am getting bored repeating myself again and again.

So you suggest that the chart was photoshoped to join different timeline scales?

Edit: The OP did nothing wrong, the website indeed has different frecuencies of data points.

Nontheless, if we see the chart of the whole existence of ED, we are currently at a historical minimun and in this chart the frecuency of data points is consistent.

No, but the data it shows doesn't exist.

On your edit, no we aren't at a historical low. March, April, May, June and July 2016 and June 2018 were lower.

What a shame…

Ed could have been the best game and look how it is now.

Who is in charge surely must be proud of himself… [haha]

Please elaborate.

Steam changed default privacy settings for API access. Default as being off. If player does not enable it voluntary, SteamSpy and others can't reliably query players anymore. Also their stats formula has been called into question before by devs, who see actual sales numbers.

So no, these numbers have never been very reliable and now they are completely off. All games saw considerable drop off after rolling out privacy update.

It is way more constructive to convey subjective criticism without such confirmation bias.

Sales≠Weekly peak players

I'm actually surprised the player count on steam only dipped 20% in the last month given the update to NMS.

For my part I've not played Elite on pc in quite some time and I don't imagine I will until the Q4 update.

It's even more surprising if you consider that it's quite some time since the last major update was released.

[h=1]Sales≠Average players[/h]

Interesting, since the chart we are talking about doesn't even show average players.

Using a different frequency of data points is entirely scientifically inaccurate and if done on purpose manipulation.

So are we scientists now?

Look, we are no geniuses and we aren't writing a peer reviewed paper, steam charts just display more information on the last month or two, it's done because it's not particularly useful to know the amount of players per day over the course of 3 years.
