I actually enjoy collecting materials. (This is where you scream "BUT THE GRIND!?")

Have you heard the saying "Do what you love, and you'll never work a day in your life"?

I always hate it when I see other CMDRs complaining about the engineer grind. I hate to see when people say "Oh, I refuse to do engineers. I'm not about that grind life. Everything I have is stock".

Listen, it's only a grind if you let it become a grind. If you enjoy the game, then you are already on your way to engineering, because the game practically hands you the materials you need for doing nearly every activity, anyway.

  • I actually like surface mining. It's peaceful, there are some fantastic views, and I LOVE driving around my SRV in VR. Me in my little cockpit bubble turning this way and that, doing jumps and flips!

  • I like asteroid MINING. I said it. I like mining, even in it's current form. Again, so peaceful, and some great views. I usually have my music turned off as you can hear asteroids clanking together!

  • I don't mind lingering around after an intense dog fight where I blew my enemy to smithereens to collect that precious loot. It's almost like I'm tea bagging my enemy as I putter around his floating debris bits.
    • I also feel like a legit pirate when I go to Anarchy systems to shoot down transport ships for their unique materials.

  • And my gosh. Just scanning ships nets you data. Scanning wakes outside of stations or at distribution centers is a reason for me to actually bust out my little Eagle! Its fast so I can close in on those wakes to scan them.

  • And lastly, with the addition of the traders, I don't have a big need to go and search for the hard-to-find materials or fly out into deep space for those elusive USS.

But in all honesty, the engineers for me give me a feeling of satisfaction when I unlock, or even finally get something to grade 5. It is SOMETHING to work towards, something that's not just "which mission rewards the best money", or "which system gets me the most exploration data". Engineers are goals for me, but they're not a grind. They are not a grind because everything I love doing in the game nets me materials. I'm always progressing along that path whether I'm trading and getting materials as a reward, blowing up ships, or even exploring with USS and on the planets.

If you're that type of person that refuses engineers because of "the grind", don't look at it that way. Chances are, you already have all the materials you need for engineering the first couple grades for most of your modules, and you probably don't even know it! How can it be a grind when you don't even know what's in your engineering inventory?

[Edit]
P.S. --- No, I am not the type of player who is more "laid back". I'm into PvP and CQC, I play other games such as battlefield and rocket league, etc... this was just my way of showing why i enjoy collecting mats, because it's a break from the action. I was Deadly on Xbox before I migrated to PC, which reset all my ranks, otherwise i'd be close to if not Elite in combat by now.

[Edit 2]
When I first started Elite back in December 2015, I didn't touch engineers. I tried it, saw it was way too much "grind", and I left it alone. End of 2016, I decided to give it another go when I finally got my Python. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe I ignored this mechanic for so long. It was awesome. It changed my outlook on Elite after that. This is why I say some people who never gave it a shot, or did but decided against it, should never say never.

Everything is in the mind. If you ask people to change their outlook on collecting materials, then they have the right to request you change your outlook on your reacting negatively to their outlook on collecting materials.

I doesn't matter what colour box you put it in it still looks like a pair of socks I didn't need. Maybe our metabolic rates are different, or maybe I was frightened by an old person when I was young but I just can't abide the tedium of it. PLEASE PLEASE help me I need help!

Collecting materials in general is not so bad, it's gameplay actually. Also exploration should benefit more from it.

Looking for a specific material for hours because you need something like 40 and you got only 3 in 1hour of gameplay, that's tedious, boring and frustrating.

It's just a matter of balancing the "rarity" levels considering this is a realistic game, ok, but not the real life.

For me the guardian FSD booster (for example) and the guardian technology in general, is still a big grind. You can say whatever you want to defend FDEV design decision but you won't change my opinion. I ran after Guardians for 1 week to get only nuts, that's not for me... When I was a student I had much more free time so I could probably do it, now playing 1hour/day I just quit that. I want to get the best I can for that 1 hour!

It is healthy to discuss and debate. People try to change everyone's minds everyday.

Engineers is kinda like eating your vegetables when you were a kid. How do you know you don't like it if you never tried it? Some people need an encouraging push.

If only we could collect raw materials on planet surfaces from our ships, I would have zero issues.
(Like having to park your ship above the outcrop/mesosiderites/metallic meteorites with pinpoint accuracy)

In other words, for me it's not about grind — it's about progressing through flight mechanics, in a flight game. (Not a driving game)

All other material gathering activities at least makes use of your ship.
Heck, I even manually scoop higher grade materials in RES/Conflict Zones.

Since the revamp engineer system, i've stopped having this problem. I always find I have an abundance of something I can just trade for.

Tell me about how natural it comes to gather materials in a combat zone.

I personally think Engineers are in a pretty good spot right now, but it's not hard to see why some people don't like being forced to change their game style to get anything done. And the fact that Engineered modules are magnitudes better than stock ones makes it feel like it's almost mandatory.

The general theme in your post is that you like slow-pace, low-action, relax-type gameplay. With a strong emphasis on visuals and very little on actual gameplay. While there is nothing wrong with that, obviously many gamers have different preferences. As soon as you expect more gameplay than 'so relaxing to watch these cool visuals' things become a chore fast.

All the 'its a grind!' 'no its not!' stuff is just a different way of saying "I like x-type games!" versus "I like y-type games!". And especially when you see that Elite is heavily marketed as a frantic action-packed game, and the previous elites were much more risky/dangerous/action than ED, it isn't weird to see many people entering the game hoping for the complete opposite of what you find entertaining. And they aren't wrong either.

Heck, I even manually scoop higher grade materials in RES/Conflict Zones.

Many materials that can be mined on the surface can also be mined in asteroids. Most grade 4 and up are only found on surfaces, but again, trading can alleviate this need that I take advantage of so often.

Good for you. Sandbox games need people like you. Every tribe in online building games (Ark, Conan, etc) needs people that mindlessly farm wood, stone, metal etc. to build those huge bases.

I just wish we could share materials in ED like in those games, because it's definitely not everybody's favorite past-time.

Well, that's where you are wrong. I'm not grinding. I'm not mindlessly gathering these materials. It's something I do on the side when I do any other activity. This is what a lot of people don't understand. The game practically hands you the materials.

Hmm. Does anyone know what mats can be gathered from asteroid mining?
I've not seen much info about this.

Many grade 3 and below raw mats can be gathered via mining in asteroids. Here is one, for example:

This is not true in the least. While this was my way of explaining why I don't think collecting mats is a grind, I am very much into PvP and CQC. I am into games like battlefield and Rocket League. I can appreciate fast pace, and certainly appreciate the slow pace and visuals. But even still, this is not about certain games over others. I'm just trying help people realize getting mats isn't as much of a grind as it is led to believe.

Like anything, done enough it becomes boring, but I jump into it from time to time as a nice relaxer, something different. Some thing with scooping in space. Agree that it's all in the mind as far as it feeling like an absolute grind. Some people need 'instant action' in everything.

I find mining (in its current form) to be the most tedious of all the activities in the game, since it makes minimal use of flight mechanics — ie. you don't even need to fly your ship while doing the actual mining.
(Holding down a button for mining lasers, while sitting there waiting for limpets to gather just isn't interesting for me)

I wish we would have to strafe around the asteroid, cutting it into pieces with a mining laser using some flight skills.

Unfortunately the game doesn't hand me the materials I need.

And the material traders are a sad joke.

Set your limpets on it and stay reasonably close to them in a big tanky ship while the targets come to you, or take a maneuverable ship and grab them while your shields recover at bit.
