General / Off-Topic Leaving the forum - goodbye nice people

After a recent unfortunate incident (that I would rather not explain...but was a little weird) I have decided this forum is too toxic now to be constructive. There are a number of usual culprits who are hostile and unpleasant to other users. People seem to forget it's a game. There's no need to belittle and be rude when someone criticises it.

My parting thought is to thank those that have offered friendly advice and even those that have disagreed with me in a respectful manner. It is only because people care about the success of the game they complain at times - the easy option would be to just quit playing. We all want the same thing for this game, it would be good if dialogue could be more respectful when discussing how to achieve that.

Safe flying CMDRs.

I know what you're saying, good luck elsewhere.

Sorry wesmacdon, but you can sometimes be toxic yourself. Blaming it on the others and constantly calling them white knights and fanboys probably doesn't help.

That said, I think that most of your criticism and the debates with you have been rather reasonable.

Victim shaming?

So after 'quitting Elite' threads, 'quitting forum' has become a thing. :)

Well, I do agree that the dangerous forums are toxic, otherwise this forum is a friendly place. My rules are:
1. Don't read dangerous forums and OA video comments (though I fail sometimes)
2. I don't engage in general debates about the game, because if someone is mudslinging heavily against a game on its own forum as a pasttime, it is not a reasonable person to discuss anything with in the first place (note: this isn't about justified criticism of aspects of the game from people who otherwise enjoy it)

I haven’t read the dangerous forums in months for obvious reasons.

Off topic folk are good folk.

Same here. Basically. I sometimes do read DD when the topic seems interesting, but otherwise, I keep my distance. And it's not just Off-Topic that's nice. Basically whole forum except the DD is still awesome with awesome people in it.

so can i haz your trollz?

so long, cmdr. something the internets and this game have in common: don't take them too seriously.

as a game forums go this one is quite good and entertaining, couldn't be complete without some share of manipulators and jerks. what i've found off-putting on occasion is whiteknight's polite-looking but utter toxic mob attitude being backed and endorsed by moderation, this can indeed present the forum itself as a very hostile entity, but even at that this one is not worse than average. and it's free as in beer!

It could be your use of the words white knight and fanboy that got people hostile towards you. You want to be treated with respect and decency, act in kind.

I usually give as good as I get. People are disrepectful to me, I treat them with the contempt that I think they deserve. But if people are nice even when we have a disagreement I will treat them in kind. I have had numerous conversations and disagreements with people on these forums which hasn't decended into name calling.

OP there are indeed a number of white knights who antagonize others players feelings quite intentionally...they know if they get a critic to lose the rag, they win the high ground so its tolerated. Thats been going on fer years why wait till now?

Theres only about 2 or 3 who are truly toxic...block them and move on. Blocking does mean some threads are confusing with the flow of comments, but if the mods wont do their job then blocking is the next best thing...works fer me...when was the last time ye saw me reply to...lets not go there and work it out fer yerself ^

It's quite ironic to complain about toxic people and insulting them as white knights and fanboys in the same post.

I left the forums a little while ago for the exact same reasons. I missed it for a few days, but then moved on. I logged back in yesterday to check out the patch notes. I even commented on a few posts, and so far haven't had any toxic interactions. However, I'll be logging out again today because reading posts that attack people like yourself for sharing criticisms about ED makes me grumpy. That and the forums can be a huge time sink, which has caused me to fall behind on RL work in the past.

If you are like me and need help with impulse control - you can't help but log in to see what people are writing on this thread for example, then change your password to something you can't remember (which is good practice anyway), write it down, hide it somewhere inconvenient like buried in the backyard, and then set your browser to forget that password.

Speaking of, time to go rebury my own password, LOL ;)
