Codex = Achievements

I don't own JWE nor have I ever played it, but this is a reasonable hypothesis.

Could you explain how the JWE "codex" is designed and implemented?

I'm afraid I don't own it either and have never played it, all I'm remembering is how they showed it off at the expo. It was when Michael Brookes was talking about the Ingen Database during the main content reveal talk, and I am taking it as comparable because he even refers to it as a "codex".

It starts from around 10:30 ish:

If it's essentially an online encyclopedia of everything in the game then it either shows you all content or stuff as you collect it along with hints on where to find stuff you don't know about.

You can call the finding of stuff as, 'discoveries, achievements, unlocks' but if it adds value to the discoveries they're putting in the game and you get a graphic and some lore, then what's the issue?

As usual there's a lot of mysterious theorycrafting in peoples own heads where they work something into something it's not, but they're not quite sure what it is they want it to be.

It can be other stuff too for example an online journal where maybe it would speak it back to you and you could share your written adventures audibly with other players.

It's an unlockable encyclopedia.. Anyone who goes to the likes of Yamiks for Elite information is just revealing their level of intelligence.

Watching Yamiks' last vid made me wonder:

if "personal narrative" is Frontiers wording for grind-unlocks,

does that mean that "Codex" is Frontiers wording for the implementation of "Achievements" in Elite Dangerous?

I mean, for most games, i can look at the achievements to get an idea what i can do aside from the story line, and sometimes i get extras for it.
And from what i heard on about that codex, it is exactly that...
a page ingame, with oversized text boxes, lots of scrolling, and ofc spoiling any future content like the ammo-synthesis tab in my ship,
and maybe an extra tab on the galmap to allow me highlighting systems with my "first discovered" tags, and hopefully one to show my minor faction standing on the big map....

or would expecting THAT much already to much?

(PS: are the icons/smiley for the topic header disabled now? i can't find the selection for them anymore :S )

I expect exactly this. Because what else could it (the codex feature) do? Likely just yet another place to store GalNet news stuff which we all know is critically important. It would be hilarious to see located under the right side Elite status list under the "CQC" entry. Achievements indeed!

Thanks for posting - just looked at the video. Hilarious!

You're right: this is probably what's coming but in orange rather than blue! Achievements indeed; just what we all need create unlocks menu thing as a tool to try to get players to use the boring few things in the game. Remember they've said this in the past that they do things to force players to use the stuff - RNGineers was a highlight of this forcing folks to travel and mine even if they don't like those activities. Explains why they designed the ruins like they did, and the timed buggy races, etc. Now you'll be motivated to go play the fun mini-games to unlock and earn an Elite medal maybe! Let's hope they have unlocks for completing xxx Hutton runs or escaping xxxx interdictions LOL.

Oh man, someone quickly FedEx FDev a dictionary open to the page where "content" is explained. This is not content.

Wow... I guess that put an abrupt end to that conversation, then [uhh]
gave others time to react :D

i don't see the codex itself as "content"... the things that are logged in there are the content, so don't blame FDEV for anything here but beeing rather cryptic about what it will be.
and TBH, i actually hope they connect the achievement part of the codex to steam/console achievements that may unlock a decal or livery item here and there.

... and after all - no one except your own OCD forces you to finish all achievements that there are.

The point here is that many folks, myself included, want to see actual content being added to this empty shell of a game. Things like a codex add nothing to the gameplay experience as they leverage the existing gameplay stuff adding little to no value. And it simply doesn't address the problem many see with the game. This will sit right there with CQC, the SAR mission board, MC and the other noteworthy releases which only took the game 'wider' not deeper.

Take a really hard look at the person talking about the codex in the JWE video above. If that doesn't convince you this is the likely thing coming to Elite, and also scare you, then I'm not sure what else can be said.

I'm hoping for a text based version of what people learn on youtube .... with piccies.

Edit: Or army lists for Warhammer: Elite Dangerous lol.

You mean like the new exploration mechanics which the codex is for. What's the point in doing exploration if you can't catalogue it. Hopefully that is what the codex will be and theybhave said it will lead you to other discoveries.

Oh better not forget about the mining mechanics.

Well, remember hope is not a plan.

Let's check back in on your post once we see this great new Q4 gameplay content which "hopefully" still gets released and not dropped. It can't be too complex more than a reskinned megaship er… carrier, or as challenging to make as new rendered ice worlds or anything that's actually worth money that someone would pay for (aka DLC).

Remember, the point of a codex is also being a central place where the lore of the game is kept. At the moment in order to get the lore of the game you have to visit all the visitor beacons, crashed ships, megaships, the Rift bases and so on and so forth.

Then you have to remember it all.

Cataloguing that is the job of the codex - a central place to view it all. It helps to immerse you in the world that bit more by helping you get at the backstory, and also catalogue current stuff that happens. The codex isn't new content per se, but it is certainly a quality of life feature.

Remember how many people complain that the story in Elite is very obtuse, out of the way, and hard to follow? Yeah, that's what the codex will likely be for.

That is, if FD are working to the most common sense definition of it.

Why would exploration be dropped. If you think it's all gonna be rubbish, why are you here. You have already convinced yourself and I doubt you will like whatever FDev bring out as it would be admitting you are wrong. I cant see that happening.

Didn't say exploration would be dropped. Didn't say it would all be rubbish. Is your English translation program working?

Seems a presumptive to complain about something and then say "let's wait and see". Surely the other way round is better?

As for JW codex, then it might be along *similar* lines but there's a whole wealth more stuff in ED that could be leveraged other than a few tidbits about dinos.

Achievements with player titles attached, ah, another dream of mine. Pirating 1bn worth of goods allows you to add to your player name '"Pirate Lord" CMDR Whoever', or 300 medusa kills '"Xeno Ace" CMDR Whoever', 10bn credits in the bank", sell 10,000 Hutton mugs and get 'Mugger CMDR Whoever'. Ah, this could be fun, I gonna make a thread for achievement and associated title suggestions, this will be fun. :)

I didn't even think about Codex might introduce achievements... That would be abominable!
