The best E:D youtube vid i've seen

The vid also got a quite positive reaction over at CIG when someone (a certain Obsidian) posted it at their General forum praising ED "emergent gameplay"... took only 2 pages for mods to send it right to the "Other Games" forum though but hey. :p

Apart from all of the fan boys stating how SC will "do it better" <sigh>

The video was amazingly entertaining and exciting to watch - what more could a fan want from any game :)

is fa off really that hard?

i keep seeing comments if people being so wowed by not using flight assist, is it really that difficult? or is everyone just so used to using it..?

Without trying to appear "l33t" FA Off isn't really that hard once you get your head around how it works but many people simply haven't used it or even seen a need for it, so they never develop the skills.

I don't think all the "wow" reactions are just for FA Off though, it's the combination of FA Off, silent running, and heat management by disabling modules and minimal thruster use all at once in order to successfully dock while avoiding police attention which makes smuggling possible.

His flying's much better than his aiming!

It requires way less precision to fly around in FA Off than to shoot at an erratic moving target. FA Off offers no advantage in combat. I've yet to meet a cmdr that's as good in combat with FA Off as he is with FA On.

Isinona, great video! Keep it up!

I tried getting into a station without docking privileges, and I got an infraction without the ability to dock.

I didn't have Silent Running on, and had engines on, generating 1% of heat. Is that the reason?

In any case, it doesn't make sense to be able to dock without permission...

It's more nuanced than that IMO.
The trick is to use FA off or on when the situation demands it, within combat.
If I was prevented from using FA off, I would be much worse in combat. If I was forced to use FA off all the time in combat, I would be much worse also.

What do you think? Is it really that easy? =)

I was inspired by watching the video and I have to report that my admittedly mediocre flight simulator skills from days of yore yield me absolutely nothing in E: D when I turn Flight Assist off. I can't see ever flying much without assist unless I got a good HOTAS input device and logged many hours of practice with it. It's definitely not for the squeamish if you are trying to fly using a 360 controller. At least, I find it quite difficult to supply the small adjustments that Newtonian flight requires using this type of input scheme.

Exactly, it's the smooth integration of these techniques, plus a well-edited video, that make this something special. The pilot was doing a lot more than "merely flying without flight assist".

You still need docking permission. You're just trying to avoid being scanned.

Gotcha, thanks. Yes, he does request and get docking permission just before entering the station. Good thing he actually got it :p

Peculiarly, I didn't get destroyed by the defenses when I entered the station without permission. Maybe the type of station or jurisdiction makes a difference? I was in Dahan.

Yah you'll get blowed up for having stolen goods or blocking the doorway or a pad (unless you're an npc) but "trespass" only gets you a fine. I'm holding on to the hope that the whole docking & traffic control systems are only a placeholder, to be replaced later with better thought out, better implimented, and more sensible & consistent systems.

Thanks again!

Yes, I agree that the no-fire zone and insta-gibs get sorted out so that smuggling and piracy become more viable career choices.

What I want to know is how such an obviously skilled player who's been in since alpha only has a Sidewinder and 25k credits.

There's a bunch of players who routinely delete their save and restart when they get to so many million creds. :) It's not about keeping score, it's about having fun.

I've never tried to sneak past Federal security with stolen cargo, but inspired by this video, I thought I'd give it a try. I didn't do it with Isinona's skill or style, but it was still exciting sneaking in under silent running with everything turned off, except occasionally turning on the drives. Got in and sold 3 tons of stolen hydrogen fuel for a cool 120 credits! I'm rich!

Anyway, also inspired, I put together a video of a non-sneaking in docking in my impression of Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" opening space dock. Again, not as cool as Isinona's, I think it turned out pretty well.

Well done... practice practice practice.

I think there's been a few people inspired by this... a few hours ago I almost collected a "cold and dark" cobra entering the station but not showing up on sensors as I was leaving. Quick dodging was required to avoid wiping out on his cockpit 'screen. :)

I did it yesterday at Aulin Enterprise, but in a Hauler and not on silent running to keep the shields, but with all unnecessary modules switched off (even life support). It's so much fun - have a look at the screenshots (click to enlarge). While getting through the entrance I was scanned and got an additional bounty because of stolen goods (have close look at my info panel).

Safe Arrival:

Disabled Modules (a bit later):
