What would happen if Frontier pulled support for ED tomorrow?

I own several accounts, through steam, oculus and Frontier. What would happen if DB told Frontier to “pull the plug?”

Could they just switch off the servers and say “that’s all folks?”

Just curious

For now they owe LEP cmdrs some dev. I guess the overarching business model would be to avoid legal action and having to give money back.

Then again maybe they really do treasure the game and mean every word they say. Slowly.

Is there a legal obligation to keep the game running?
There may be some consumer protection issues with copies sold in the last X months before an unannounced shutdown (and previous happenings indicate that Frontier would refund those), but beyond that govny's "nope" above covers is.

It's not like there never were any online games that happily took subscription and MTX money until the servers went down for the last time.

There is a risk of legal action when offering up a year of development an promises that aren't actualised.
Which would not apply at the moment, the game has no outstanding "paid promises". Both the base game and Horizons are "finished" as far as the box text goes.

If ever, FD would have been disbanded and joined Rainbird, Microprose and Bazmeson in Raxxla before. Until that happens, we're safe :D

I cant find the quote but at the very beginning David said that if they ever "pull the plug" they will open the game for community to maintain. So... I guess that would happen.

He also said the game would be playable offline, so I wouldn't get too carried away.

He guaranteed it, but it will certainly be another lie. Let's wait and see.

by the way, during kickstarter DB said that if ED shut down, they would have provided the code to create private servers.

I wouldn't assume bad faith, but he doesn't decide that. It's up to the shareholders to decide when the servers get shut down and what happens with the game code. And it's very unlikely anything you dream of will happen with the IP, once it reached the end of its commercial life (in terms of making money off it). It will simply vanish and that's it.
