Hand recognition for Oculus Rift

Greetings Commanders,

i just read an article on a german comuter magazin website about hand recognition for the Oculus Rift (link is in german)

For the non-german-speaking folks: the text is about to companies that are building soft- and hardware to recognize your hand and its movements and shows that on the screen. Basically it works with attaching a 3d camara to the Oculus Rift and some software.

Wouldn't this be cool for Elite Dangerous? Imagine this is supported and you can see your hands moving in the cockpit. For example if you look to the left to look at the contacts list, you don't have to use some button assignments to select a contact, but you can simply raise your hand and touch it.

Please, Frontier, take a look at it.

I bought into the control VR kickstarter in the hopes it would work with ED

Yeah it would be amazing. It seems a trivial thing in a game where you already have the same controls as your character. But since you do use other systems in the ship, it would add greatly to the immersion if you could use your hands naturally to interact with the holographic panels. Something I think about every time I load the game up in VR.

Looks like Oculus themselves will be talking about their own controller at next month's Oculus Connect event.

Could be quite interesting.

Why not use the Xbox Kinect device to monitor your movements, and have them mimicked by the avitar pilot who normally sits there looking bored :p
He could operate the panel controls following your movements.

If and when a good solution comes along then definitely hope ED supports.

As it stands, even though I'm always hearing great things about Oculus Rift experience in the game, the one thing that puts me off is fumbling about in the relative dark for ship controls.

All for it. Keep us posted? Cheers.

Leap motion

I was able to control some cockpit functions in FSX with a Leap motion controller, when I can be bothered I will see if it can be used to operate the menu's in ED think it could with some messing about and practice...check out the Leap here https://www.leapmotion.com/
