Steam Charts Record Low Sept 6 = 1545 "Players"

Looks like a new record was set for Elite and the fewest ever players online according to the Steam Charts with only 1545 players. And that was likely a bunch of hard-core, multi-pip'd players so it's likely even fewer actual 'bodies'. I think there is a message there. Gnosis anyone?

PS4 isn't included in that.
Xbox isn't included in that
Oculus isn't included in that
I (since I don't play thru steam) am not included in that.

Steam has said their stats are useless.

Given all of this, WHY do people keep bringing up Steam charts?

You're right. For all we know they could be worse! But we just don't know either way do we. So, for the one metric we do know it shows a major / significant decline. Again, there's a message in this.

It's easy to be misleading when picking a steam number out of context, where the dip corresponds closely to the server downtime. That said, steam charts do have a substantial sample set enough to make some relative comparisons. ED has nicely returned to the top 75 back above XCOM2 & EvE, while NMS has dropped to 47.

Steam does not calculate Xbox or PS4 or all the players who still use the Elite launcher. So stop posting fake news.

I agree 100% with you.

Because people don't account for the other ways people play Elite Dangerous.

But this isn't out of context. This is simply looking at ITD (inception to date) or all. So all arguments against this being server downtime, etc., are irrelevant. Yes, it's PC only. That is what Steam is. But we don't know what the console data tells us. None of us knows. It could be same, better or worse.

Which means Steam data is WORTHLESS and FAKE NEWS Because it does not account for the other way this game can be played.

So if the steam charts (that source that is so accurate it is only quoted by Doom and Gloomers) reported that a record number of players had logged on, would you be reporting that? Nah, as it goes against your hatred of FD, in fact you would do your upmost to derail the thread by stating that the charts aren't accurate.

I think the message is don't trust Steam Charts for accurate statistics.

The early GalNet report was posted less than an hour before the 6th (UTC time). That wasn't enough time to reach the entire community and kill everyone's enthusiasm. Many, many people were still playing and traveling to the Gnosis right up until downtime at 7:00am, and after downtime, the servers were so slammed with people trying to get back on that I couldn't get past the main menu until an hour later.

Now, it's obvious that the Cone Sector event was a failure for the most part. But there's just no way that the 6th had a record low of players. A record low happens when nothing is going on, and the 6th was probably the most eventful day in ED since the CMDR Salome thing. If any day was going to bring a new record low in players, it would be today, the 7th, because now everybody knows what happened to the Gnosis without needing to log in.

Put aside YOUR biases. The Steam Charts tell a story which is real based on the data they collect. This Gnosis failure was exactly that. It upset customers. Don't ignore this.

Steam stats! .. The predictor of Elites doom since 2015 .. they mean nothing, come on now, don't we all know this by now ...

Thinking about it, probably not as these things seem to be posted once a week.

Steam stats are VERY relevant to measure acquisition and retention of new players, since most of them will purchase the game through Steam.

This means that these numbers are, approximately, abysmal. Rightfully so, at this point.
