Oculus Dash / Home 2.0 - Experiences & Tips Thread

oh my seemless mode is rather good.. its like OVRdrop having desktop in the game. But still, when I click on something on my dektop the focus goes away. Ill try that script again but I think thats gonna bring me the opposite problem.

EDIT: it works. seemlessly indeed.
So steps are:
a) activate ED in oculus app, theres a key in your account settings at FD site
b) set up ED runner
c) always launch ED from oculus app

And suddenly you can have desktop open and still being in control of the ship.

Sorry to hijack this thread..

I was just informed that people still use ED:Runner. I'm the author of it and 1: Did not think anyone really used it except myself and 2: Have made two updates (1.4 and 1.5) to it that was not released because of point #1 =)

1.4 added clicking the mouse in the Elite game window at startup to automatically skip the long intro.
1.5 I just changed so that any programs in [LaunchPrograms] are not started until it finds Elite running (As per suggestion from Camlis).

Also, Camlis had problems with his Xbox controller. It only works when ED:Runner is in focus. Personally I use an X-52 Pro HOTAS so I never noticed, but plugged my Xbox One controller from my Oculus in and noticed the same thing. They Joystick_Test programs only reacts when they are the active, focused window. This, of course, breaks ED:Runner with Xbox controller(s?) as it does not react to the controller unless ED:Runner is the active window (kinda breaks its purpose...)

This seems to be a driver issue from MS though. I've fixed it with older drivers.

If anyone else is interested, I'll make a new thread for ED:Runner as, for some reason, the old one is locked and update to 1.5. Do not give suggestions or requests here as I don't want to clutter this thread to much. Wait for the updated thread version =)

Edit: New thread here: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...eadsets-with-joysticks-HOTAS-part-2?p=6893231

Could someone please explain, or show with a video, how to type in the galaxy map search box when using Rift with Dash, and the keyboard that's available in Dash.

This does not work at my end.

"- You can use the Windows On-Screen keyboard by pressing the keyboard icon on any window in Dash, this allows you to enter system names into the Galmap search bar from the void environment (YAY - At last!)."

This does not work either.

"You have to:
Open Galmap and have a cursor in the system search box > press the home button on your Touch controller > Click on the On-Screen Keyboard app keys to enter the system name > Press Home on the Touch controller to return to Elite. "

The keyboard never has focus, hence you can't type. Actually, it types the first letter you enter, then looses focus.

Should add, it works fine with a physical keyboard, just not the Dash keyboard, or Windows OSK. Kinda makes it useless if I still need to grab a physical keyboard.

Try using the OSK by pinning it inside the cockpit, seems to work fine. ED must be launched in seemless mode for this to work.

From widows desktop / can also be done from oculus desktop.
1 Open OSK : windows key + R
2 Type in osk.exe

From Oculus
3 Start oculus
4 Launch ed from within oculus
5 Goto oculus desktop and grab osk ( trigger + grip ) move / resize then pin osk somewhere in the cockpit.
6 Refocus ED and the keyboard should remain in view.
7 Open galmap (make sure cursor is in the input area) and use osk with touch controller.

osk can also be used for any other ingame typing.

Thanks, been through this, and it simply does not work anymore. Seems after the firmware update for the Rift something has changed.

I can pin Windows OSK no problem, and it works fine with a pinned browser in the cockpit, or whatever I like, but not the Galaxy map. The cursor is flashing in the search box of the Galaxy map, and when I select a letter, say "a", it appears in the search box, that's great, but I can't type another letter because it appears "focus" is now back in the Galaxy map, and the pinned keyboard is rendered useless. The Galaxy map has focus and I can't "focus" the keyboard anymore. Even bouncing back and forth between the "game and desktop/dash" has not effect. Furthermore, after the first attempt of using the OSK, it's no longer available. Meaning it simply disappears. I can click on it's icon in the task bar, and it does not show. The hourglass "swirls" for a second and that's it, the keyboard is no longer visible. Exit ED and all is fine, the OSK is usable again.

So, something has changed recently, either the Dash firmware update from a week ago, a Win10 update, or the latest Ed update, or a combination of those has broken something. Again, the OSK works fine pinned with a browser, but as soon as I try it with the Galaxy map, it appears to "break" the OSK for good. If I never try the OSK with the Galaxy map, meaning I just use it with a pinned browser window, everything is fine.

Running latest ED, my Oculus App Version is 1.29.0.651191, and Win 10 Pro is 1709 os build 16299.547. I launch Ed from the Oculus library, as I bought it from the Oculus store.

I also have a thread in this section specifically dedicated to this issue, I'd prefer to discuss it there, so it doesn't get buried here.

So to get Dash to work (Netflix in game) I first need to Download Elite AGAIN ? via Oculus store? even though ED is installed already via steam Yes ? No?

If VR goes the way of the dodo , then this hogging of tech by billionaires, for 'their club' will be the reason.

Only if you want to use Dash's seemless mode. Dash will work with Elite launched from Steam but only in void mode. So it depends on if you want to be able to manipulate your windows while still being able to see your cockpit (seemless mode - only works with the game installed / launched from Oculus Home) or if you are happy to have the game un-viewable while you move windows around and resize them (void mode - works from the stand-alone launcher or Steam).

Just an update and some findings for Oculus 1.3.1, since they changed things around a bit and a couple of gotchas.

1. You must enable the "Desktop Panel Pull-out" experimental feature (from the Dash Panel -> Settings)

- If this is "greyed out" you probably have too many monitors plugged into your graphics card. Doesn't seem to matter what ports they are plugged into (I had 3 plugged into Displayports, reddit seemed to think it was limited to HDMI/DVI ports. Unplugging any one of these let me enable this feature. I have since plugged one of my secondary monitors into the onboard GPU; still have 3 screens + Oculus now).

2. If pull-out panels are blank with an exclamation mark on them, then try setting the "NVidia-VR" (ie, Oculus) screen as "primary monitor".

3. To pull out individual windows, you have to press & hold either the "A" button or the trigger button, and -then- "grab" the window. Once it's pulled out of the screen and placed somewhere, you just have to "grab" it to move it. Remember to "pin" the window(s) you want visible in your cockpit.

Seamless mode no longer works after installing beta

So I've tried running the beta today in Oculus, managed to get it running (apart from constant disconnects, but oh well). However, at some point seamless mode stopped working, both in beta and normal game. It worked fine previously when launched from Oculus Home, but now I can't get it to work anymore. Anyone had similar problems?

Turns out it's a problem with Oculus itself after all, seems like a broken update on the Public Test Channel, I exited it, installed 1.31.0 and now it works again.
