Does Frontier hate explorers?

This isn't sarcasm, I honestly do wonder sometimes if Frontier despises their sizeable exploration community?

They seem to either willfully disregard explorers or simply don't consider them. One signals neglect while the other signifies a dislike of some kind. I'm just wondering which is it?

  • They implement geysers and fumeroles to find on planet surfaces but with no tools at all to find them, forcing explorers to scour planets with their eyeballs only which can take dozens of frustrating hours.
  • They turn the galaxy beige for an entire year before finally fixing their mistake. (Admittedly with improvements too, though we did not regain the lost terrain details)
  • They neglect improving exploration mechanics for four years, not since 1.0.
  • After four years we still don't have any exploration missions in the game.
  • Frontier removed Exploration CGs completely.
  • Neutron Jumps were a dev mistake, and if not for the exploration community begging and pleading to keep it as a "feature" we wouldn't have them today. It never even occurred to Frontier that it might be a meaningful mechanic until then.
  • They finally add heat sink synthesis, only to make it require manufactured materials, meaning you cannot replenish it at all out there on your own. They entirely forgot that heat sinks had uses beyond spamming them together with shield cells.
  • They promise an Exploration Feedback Forum for the Q4 improvements but then delay it, then delay it again, and now it's postponed indefinitely with no new date at all.
  • They "prioritized" the Ice Planet improvements out of 3.3 and won't answer the question if they are scheduled for a later date or completely cut from the roadmap.
  • They implement Multicrew as combat only with no exploration use at all. They don't even make SRV's, a common exploration feature, compatible with Multicrew.
  • Over half of the ships in Elite are combat oriented while only two are designed with exploration in mind, and ironically the most capable explorer is neither of them and is in fact a multirole ship.
  • One of the "exploration" ships also has the slowest fuel scoop rate in the entire game, a key module for exploration.
  • They agree to jump Jaques Station out to Beagle Point at the conclusion of the DWE, wait until lots of explorers fly there or wait around for him to arrive, but then instead jump him completely somewhere else.
  • And the latest addition to the list, they have no problem usurping a Canonn exploration event into a combat only affair, at the expense of non combat explorer ships no less, while simultaneously negating any exploration gameplay from the event at all. Despite thousands of explorers flying to the Gnosis eager for a rare exploration event in the game.

As an explorer it often feels like Frontier doesn't consider the playstyle when developing the game, or when creating and managing events. It often feels like they vastly prefer the combat playstyle over exploration. I know Q4 is finally supposed to include major exploration improvements, but given Frontier's behavior regarding explorers I'm worried that their temperment will prevent them from moving this aspect of the game forward in a meaningful manner.

I really just wish Frontier was as thoughtful, considerate, and respectful towards explorers (and non combat players in general) as they were to the combat crowd. I really wish exploration would get half of the development focus and resources that combat gets.

There are three Elite ranks in the game, my hope is that someday Frontier develops with that triad in mind in a more balanced manner than they have up until now. Combat, Trading, and Exploration. The game could use a greater focus on the latter two than the former first from now on.

Pretty Please. With sugar on top. With Lavian Brandy icing smothered all around it too.

I don't think so.

I just think something like this takes a while to nail down, bear in mind the original series were combat trading driven games.

Unless they hand craft stuff everywhere and put the game on rails and force you down corridors spoon feeding you then being procedural it's obviously harder to implement than we'd like, remember the daft SRV's and ships littered all over the unvisited worlds however many versions back? They are working on some stuff for explorers but no doubt to some it'll be a "grind" having to build up a scan of a planets details.

They upped the module space on my DBX which chopped my range, I would like the option not only to engineer stuff but also to ditch stuff when out in the black ie if I kill my SRV I would like to be able to ditch the hanger along with other modules to gain some speed and jump range.

Yes they could improve things a lot but then the detractors will no doubt jump on that for one reason or another.

No I don't think they hate us.

Combat makes for flashy videos and screnshots, which brings in more players, and exploration mechanics do not. Also, the beige planets look like the photos we get from Nasa. Therefore it was a low priority to make more colorful planets and and it's a low priority to improve exploration, and it's a high priority to make combat even more flashy and exciting.

with nothing to do but look for desolate rocky worlds to drive around and shoot rocks

...and, shoot other Cmdr’s in sixty different ways, shoot obelisks, shoot asteroids, shoot barnacles, shoot aliens..

I do not know how big the combat focused community is, it may well dwarf the exploration community by a long shot? But considering eleven thousand plus Cmdr’s recently checked in for what was largely considered and exploration mission/experience. Aboard the Cannon flagship “science” vessel. The exploration community is clearly motivated, and massive, and desperate to see new things.

The question still remains, what new things can you add without it becoming gamey and ...cough... NMS ...cough...?
And how long will it take for those new things to become the same old things after scouting round a billion planets

We're getting a massive makeover in Update 4, so I think not.

There's also been a big change of plans recently, as announced by Fdev. That tells me there's been an internal shake up and people have been moved around projects. I'm assuming nothing until the next announcement.

So there's nothing between honk the star and NMS? You need to play more space games.

They do not hate them, they just don't really care as they let them define their own trail.
But there is indeed a lack of functionnalities to help them in their path.

In a sense it is a shame. Let's hope Q4 will be the "Jesus pach" Explorers are waiting for.

Hard to argue with any of these solid points from a veteran explorer. None of the other snarky comments in this thread even come close to refuting the OP's valid criticisms.

I have a small hope that Frontier will pull a rabbit out of their hat for the exploration portion of 3.3. It's a small hope though, and much diminished after they didn't have the bravery to send us to die in the Cone Sector.

Who knows? We will just have to patiently wait and see what is actually added, after the recent announcement and delays to ice planets.
We have no choice, and waiting is all we can realistic do.

I have tried other space games but I kinda like those two the most (maybe because they are polar opposites)
To be honest I'd be happy with a degree of NMS in ED but I'm guessing that would create much gnashing of teeth.

Not necessarily hate... but definitely low-priority in scheduling as opposed to the combat crowd.

Look at the volume of weapons systems, platforms and activities available for combat... then look at exploration.

Mmhmm.

Also, how many dedicated beta programs and balancing passes have we had for anything other than combat?

None of the OP proves Hate either

Not sure I'd go as far as to say they "hate" exploration or explorers, but there's no doubt exploration is a mere shadow of what was discussed in the DDF and hasn't received much in the way of attention since 1.0.

I've been resigned to things not improving ever since one of the devs, possibly Michael Brookes but my search-fu is letting me down, described the exploration mechanics as "solid". They later qualified that by saying it was "technically solid" but with the possibility of adding new things to find. And to be fair we did get new structures and other surface-based oddities. But as OP points out, without the tools to find these things it's just more of the same. Jump, scoop, honk, fly over candidate planets looking for fumeroles or barnacles.

This years' Q4 update may be the watershed. If FD can get some decent additional exploration mechanics in place, perhaps with new gameplay to satisfy those who aren't already engaged with simply being Out There, then there's a chance they might continue to build on that over the next few years. But if Q4 falls flat, it might be the last time FD are prepared to throw resources at what for some reason is still considered a fringe activity. Even though more people have claimed to be explorers than combat pilots, combat seems sexier and continues to be the thing that draws all the attention.
