Now that board flipping is going to be gone here's an idea to fix combat loggers.

Make our ships persistent even after logging off.

There they are, floating in space or nestled in a station safe and secured while we go on our daily activities in real life.

But who am I kidding, they still don't have wing instancing 100% fixed yet.

So what exactly should happen then? I do not get it. Just sitting there. doing what? nothing? what for? how would that solve anything? all this would make is to make people change into solo and then let their ship wait in solo.... Yay, so why even play in open then?

Because if you do not do that, and we can destroy these "player" ships.... then we will get alot of complaints about people who had their ships destroyed while logged out? How would that work? I logged out, and when I logged in, some player had found my ship and destroyed it! Now I have to pay rebuy costs for this? This would get mad negative reception...

So lets make the ship invincible in this case.... then we have gained nothing....this is even worse than the current system... not to mention that this invisible practice target at any time, can come to life and wreck havoc among unsuspecting players... No thanks.

OP, you haven't thought this through have you?

I log off (properly) with my ship "floating in space". Then I come back later after my "daily activities in real life" to find my ship blown up by some random player?

Well I was kind of being facetious because I'm on the fence with FD's decision to "fix" board flipping when the game has been out for this long. And you gotta admit the persistent ships would please the "I need immersion" community lol. I had my own views and ideas on making PvP better but that went nowhere and it would definitely work with persistent ships.

Really though what is in the game now that makes you want to play in Open besides PvP? There isn't. So this idea wouldn't make people go in Solo any more then they do already. It would just make things more challenging and make you think more on where to go before you log off. Like what are the chances of another player to find another player ship that is shutdown on a planet surface? Or even floating around in normal space? Heck make a sleep mode for the ships so they don't give off a strong heat signature while your logged off.

This is just mainly to help the PvPers with combat logging.

On the other hand, this could be an opportunity for FDev to sell sprays in the store, so you'd sometimes log back in only to find your ship vandalised by "Matt woz 'ere" written all over it in giant pink letters and maybe a couple of bricks where the landing gear's supposed to be.

#spaceboot for thrusters...

With the OP's suggestion in place, it would be possible to manipulate P2P connections to disconnect a person and then destroy their ship while it sits there, persistently floating around under no control.

It's possible to do this now (the disconnection part) but there's no motivation to do it because a ship vanishes when a player is disconnected.

Pretty much every idea that involves forcing a ship to remain present (somehow) after it's pilot gets disconnected does create a motivation for people to manipulate P2P connections and is likely to lead to bad things.

Combat logging might be annoying but if ships remained in play persistently, pretty much every combat engagement could become a race to see who could alt-tab out of the game quickest, run a script, get their opponent disconnected and then destroy their ship at leisure.

The OP's suggestion could pretty-much kill PvP, in it's entirety, stone-dead.

I wonder if instead of persistence, which isn't possible, on an ungraceful exit during a combat situation, the ship just instantly explodes and the logger logs back into a rebuy? [haha]

I am kinda kidding here, so many problems with that logic when it comes to legit connection problems.

I have wondered if a Player's ship could be replaced by an equivalent/identical NPC when they log-off in a shared instance - maybe persisting the PCs presence for some seconds.

...but I'm sure someone would find a way to exploit it...

On a bad day I can lose connection to the matchmaking server every 15 minutes. Being punished for my ISPs failures isn't an appealing prospect.

P2P blocks this, they need a dedicated backup server for lost connections. From an IT point of view, you really don't want to give perms to another peer (regarding your save game) as it can quickly be manipulated and set to 0. However, I'd go a draconian and easy approach. Connection loss during combat without the 15s timer? -> Ship rebuy. Period.
Ensure stable connection and always have a rebuy or two in your pocket. Yes this will 'cause more rebuys than there are combat logging incidents but see no other way to fix it. They decided for P2P and thus, should do what it takes to ensure and enforce proper actions taken. I myself am happy to pay all my bounty and fine credits plus a couple of rebuys if I can be sure that everyone else has to pay the bills as well.

Obviously if you are experiencing a DC during non-combat activities there is no penalty. But during combat, especially for solo and PG players that don't get reported and recorded there needs to be a way to enforce the bills in all modes as all modes are equap, right?
